I'm not into MMOs, i know when i buy one I would of wasted money.

It's no the MMOs fault, it's mine.

My only concern is that this will somehow be pay-to-play, even though PSN access is free. If it's free to play, I'll be very, very happy. If not, I'll be very, very sad. No middle ground for me...2009-08-19 18:29:00

Yeah it is true, but on an other hand, when i was playing FFXI, i didn't touch, and as a consequence, paid, any other video game during at least 1 year and half. It actually cost me the price of two or three games... Not so much for 1 year a half of entertainment 2009-08-19 18:32:00

You've a point there, but I don't have a credit card or the cashflow to merit paying to play a game online. I mean, cutting grass over the summer can net you some serious cashola, but at the end of the day, there's no way I could ever play WoW for more then a few months before the money ran out, you know?2009-08-19 18:34:00

I am a HUGE Final Fantasy fan girl. ^_^

But the strange thing is, I own every FF game ever released except for XI. The reason why is because it was online, and at the time I could not afford it, nor did I have a way to pay for it since I had no card. So my world was crushed because of this and I was very disappointed and found it to be a horrible move on Square's part. So it's no wonder XI didn't do near as well as the others in the series. But when I first saw footage of XIV I loved the look and feel of it, and now that I have a card and money, I definitely plan on getting XIV. But I still don't agree with the monthly fee thing and am disappointed that only two games after XI are doing an online one AGAIN.

Yes but you know that between two major FF, there is several years. Actually, FFXI have been released now more than 8 years ago. It make sens to release a new gen MMO now.2009-08-19 21:33:00

I think that what makes this game such a big deal is the fact that it's an MMO on a console. I mean, we've got some games with online support that goes pretty high (MAG, anyone?) but this is the first REAL MMO. But, that's just my opinion...2009-08-19 21:33:00

I've been put off mmo's for a while not but this looks really interesting

For a start it's on a console so it'll be my first mmo without lag!

The environments also seem have a really vast feel to them and i like that in games.
I've always liked exploring the most in mmos, and this game looks as if it has plenty of that

It just depends how much the subscription fee is.

And FFXI?
It as on PC first but latter on PS2 and XBOX360...

I think it will be comparable to the FFXI (playonline in fact) fee. It is around 12 ?/month for playonline subscribe. so it might be near of 12 $ with the video games regular conversion...lol

I know how long it's been, but the point is that if Square is going to do an MMO, they should do it the right way (basing this off of FF and the fans). They should provide an offline option with the game, maybe the same style they are doing XIII with two games. Of course the offline option won't be as expansive as the online. But something of the sorts.

Regardless, I love the way Square does an MMO because FF is known for its absurdly difficult super bosses tuned for hardcore gamers like myself. And last I heard FFXI has some of the hardest bosses known in MMOs which I'm sure XIV will have also. Another Pandemonium Warden anyone? I also like the axpansive world presented in XIV. Finally, I'll be playing a higher quality MMO RPG than the free Shaiya one I play. And WoW, I'm not sure if I'll bother with.

Anyways, regardless of the cons Square presents, I am still looking forward to XIV.

Based on the fact that FFXI on the 360 had a monthly subscription fee on top of the regular Xbox Live costs, I'm pretty sure that XIV will be charging a fee for usage. There are ways to work around the montly fee system, and I mean from a game designing point of view rather than some sort of illegal method, but I suspect this will be a monthly fee game.

But something of the sorts.

Phantasy Star Online is an example of what you are trying to describe. The game has a single player campaign, which is the main game, and then an online game as well. The bulk of the effort was put into the single player version of the game.

The problem was, the online game was pretty terrible. Although the game did open up in what class, race and so on you could choose as you were bound to a premade character for the single player campaign, in reality the online part was basically a generic random dungeon grind fest, without any real plot or great reason for you to be doing so. From what I have read, the online component was just rubbish, with it being an excuse to extend the game's lifespan without really providing anything worth the play. You also had to pay a monthly fee to access this online content as well.

Although it's an example of what you are wanting/describing, s3xNstilettos, I would hate to see other games go down this route. It makes a lot of sense for game makers to produce completely seperate online/single player games rather than try and tack the two together. Almost always you find either the online or offline suffers, or else the game overall is a grind/hack/generic quest fest, with the idea being that you are just grinding to get better stats/items, regardless of whether you are online or not.

So I'm quite happy to see SquareEnix go the dedicated MMO route, to be honest. It shows that they are willing to put a whole lot of time, effort and resources into making a fully fleshed out online game that can stand up on it's own right.

If you really want to see a FF game that is online without a fee, with a strong independent single player and online campaign, then I recommend the FF Crystal Chronicle games that have recently come out on the Nintendo DS and Wii. These games play radically different to the usual FF staples though, with the gameplay resembling more an action hack and slash rather than the more turn based/semi-turn based of the FF normal games. They are Nintendo only, however, and I do not know of any plans to broaden the release base for them.

Certainly it's sad from a purist point of view that people could be missing out on a FF game simply because of an online only/monthly fee component, but the FF universe as a whole is a relatively unrelated universe, with each game being independent of each other. So it's not as huge a loss as say, not seeing the second part of a three part story. You also need to have several systems to get every single game and it's many varients. FF Tactics is different on the GBA/DS and PSP systems, and FF Crystal Chronicles (the original) was a Gamecube only game. As these games are, as I said before, radically different to normal FF games, well, I'll leave it up to your own judgement as to where you stand on this matter.

Yes, it will bee a monthly subscription to a new system such Playonline. But, just to restablish the thing, you might pay a monthly fee for FFXI on XBOX360, BUT you are able to play it online WITHOUT paying the subscription to XBOXlive. I mean, since there was a subscription to Playonline, a silver abonement to XBOX live (the free one) was sufficient to play FFXI
So you do not pay twice!
