A Sack Person in 9!?!

Archive: 43 posts

Some of you may have heard of the new Tim Burton film called 9. I just heard of it as I stumbled across a trailer at MySpace and was stunned by what I saw.

Is it just me, or does this character from the movie have a striking resemblence to a certain someone we all know too well?

Okay now its working. And i think I remember an old LittleBigPlanetoid article on this. Give me a sec

EDIT: Here it is

The latest film from acclaimed director/producer Tim Burton features characters with very a similar design to our ever loved Little Big Planet mascot, Sackboy.

'9' is "A post-apocalyptic nightmare in which all of humanity is threatened." and the latest official trailer shows beautifully hand-crafted characters complete with chunky stitching - and some even sport a more than familiar zip running down their chest. The trailer also features a giant mechanical evil skull that bears a striking resemblance to Skulldozer, which appears in the games 'The Wedding' levels.

Sackboy? with his trademark zip and a hessian fabric skin with chunky stitches.

http://www.littlebigplanetoid.com/images/uploads/9-sackzilla.jpg
Is that Skulldozer?

Little Big Planet and it's leading star were first shown during GDC Spring 2007. We don't quite know when concepts for 9 were first started, but there is always a chance that Tim Burton and his team saw that special something in our little sack friend and are simply paying homage to his greatness. Either way, Tim Burton's films are nearly always nothing short of brilliant so we'll be looking forward to seeing 9 with great anticipation.

9 is rather unsurprisingly out on 09/09/09 and you can watch the trailer on Apple Trailers.

ZOMG Tim Burton's ripping off LBP! Nooo! Nah, this isn't the case at all.

You may or may not have heard that 9 is based on a 2005 short film, of the same name, which did indeed feature a sentient rag doll. I think sackboy was Mr Yellowhead back then, if he even existed at all Bring on the rumour mill and pitchforks people!

Just to add more weight to this, the original short was being created for 4 years before it was released so this puts the orignal concept for 9 back as far as 2001. Clearly LittleBigPlanetoid's research lasted all of 2 seconds if they couldn't find out that information...

I'm really looking forward to 9 actually, looks like it has loads of potential.

Thanks for pointing that out to me JKthree. ^_~

And I got the image working now, but it doesn't matter with images like JK's.

I wonder if Media Molecules has seen these resemblences and if they are curious as to whether his inspiration may have possibly came from LBP? ^_^

Just pointing out that this is only produced or even exec. produced by Burton.

I love Burton but in this case he does not deserve his name plastered all over this.
It came out of the mind of Shane Acker and it is he who deserves praise.

PS: He did a sackperson before Mm as well.

Yes but Shane Acker does get the writing/directing credit and is obviously using Tim Burton's name to market it. Very similar to what happened with The Orphanage and Hostel (examples of the top of my head). Unknown directors get their work recognised by having a well-known name attached. OK so the ignorant masses won't realise, but they probably wouldn't pay attention to the name of a director unless they were really famous anyway. Those people that do pay attention to these things will know and it will give a much-deserved boost to Shane Acker's Career.

Well in this case I have just learned something. Either way, one got inspiration from the other, which I now know would most likely be MM getting inspiration from Shane Acker.

The chances that none of them got inspirations from the other just seems very unlikely, but possible.

EDIT: I just didn't know the sack person concept of the character in that movie existed before MM.

Sackboy has a bigger head.

We don't know when the concept art for sackboy came about. Someone from MM could have been drawing him for years.

Still, sackboy has a bigger head. I doubt this is related to LBP at all, because sackboys head is bigger.

Of course but people are simply referring to the similarities, which can't help but to leave many wondering.

It also makes me wonder what it would be like if there ever was a LBP movie? Which I'm sure would look and feel every bit like LBP, although that is not the case with some cross overs.

Actually, sackboy looks a lot like the rag doll on the standard cover of Korn's Issues album as well. Just less abused....2009-08-19 10:07:00

Wait...but isn't sackboy just supposed to look like a rag doll? To my knowledge, MM didn't make the first ragdoll. CASE CLOSED! I WIN!

Plus, my sackboy looks nothing like that. He looks like a cross between a ringmaster monkey king and Kratos.

Actually no, you don't win.

We aren't talking about ragdolls, we're talking about sackboy before in his purist form without any costumes, etc. The iconic zipper and certain similarities are all sack people (a specific kind of rag doll if that's how you want to word it). If we were talking about rag dolls in general, then of course MM didn't make the first rag doll.

That movie looks awesome. I saw a preview for it with my father before a movie and he said: "Is that that 'LittleBigPlanet' game you play?"

It looks like LittleBigPlanet made babies with Fallout 3.

Do you know what? I actually have no idea what he's talking about

Also, what's even funnier is looking up definitions of "ab" "abs" "A.B." and "A.B.S" on urban dictionary. Some of it's quite offensive, but that's why it make me chuckle whentrying to relate it to a sackperson

This is not a "Tim Burton" film. And, while I am sorry to say it: YouTube - 9 By Shane Acker

preceded LittleBIGPlanet by some two-three years. It was originally a short which is now being adapted as a full length feature with the help of Tim Burton.

But did you ever think that perhaps, the movie deserves that Tim Burton name was plastered on it?
I mean, i never think as you when great producers promote an initially small movie and put their name on as "producer". These creators do not need that to be promote; But the movie, yes.
I interpret this as: Tim Burton liked this enough to produce it. So, it is ok for me

I wouldn't be surprised if this get's discussed more seriously in the future. With LBP's success and popularity becoming greater all the time, this would be an excellent way for Sony to generate more money for themselves, as well as bring new fans to the game.

Admittedly though, the voice casting would have to be handled with great care (if sackpeople were to be given voices at all).

True... but have you seen some of the kids movies these days, or adult oriented ones for that matter? Plots are irrelevant where big budget film is concerned.

Besides, it wouldn't be hard to come up with a plot for LBP if someone was dedicated to the idea.

LBP does have a storyline involving the Collector and Creator Curators. So it does have a plot. There could easily be a LBP movie using this and the different worlds as themes seen in the movie.

Yesh.... I love Tim Burton, and it's him that inspired me to become one with the film industry.... still studying though... not a pro yet :'( but just 2 years of classes to go!

Yes, but the 9 started production at around 2005. Waaaay before LBP was announced.
I remember this cleaerly because i was looking around Tim Burton's profile back in 2006 and saw that he was making a film about 9 secret agents that try to save the world (Stitchpunks now).

As a filmfan you should know Tim Burton is only producing this film.
Stop giving him the praise, I don't think he is actually doing that much on the film.

The film is being directed by Shane Acker based on his own short film.

the plot of lbp is entirely based on the concept that lbp is a game. it openly recognized concepts such as servers, level publication, and creation. even the mgs pack continues this them with the level spamming machine. it is my belief that this would not translate to film. at all.

furthermore, the concept that one of the two HAD to take inspiration from the other is laughable. i don't want to sound mean here, but examples contrary to this assertion occur on a daily if not hourly basis. just consider the population of the planet and that they are all capable of creative thought and also all have the same world to draw inspiration from. just because no two lives are the same doesnt mean they are all entirely unique.

even furthermore, i would agree that if i were getting into the film industry and a big name said to me:
"want me to put my name real big over yours on this (and fund the production) so you can sell a gazillion tickets and start your career in style?"
i would say:
"yes please"

now allow me to paint some bias all over myself by stating that i have been waiting for this film with extreme anticipation.
i go online sometimes just to watch the trailer or original short.
i considered skipping a friends wedding to catch the opening.

Zwollie speaks the truth, and he speaks it HARD!!

The only thing Tim Burton is really offering this movie "9" is his clout to get it made. Shane Acker had only this short film, he had never directed a feature, and it's phenomenally hard to get a movie like that made, the money people get scared off easily. So that's where big directors come in, they put their weight behind a new talent, offer him ongoing advice while they're at it, and the kid gets his movie made. It's exactly what happened with Peter Jackson and Neil Blompkamp (director of District 9).

Producers can be really involved in a project, like Burton was in The Nightmare Before Christmas. He was the producer of that film, but he helped with the stop-motion. Also, producers have more power and say-so than a director.

Also, 9 is the only stitchpunk with a zipper, as far as I can tell, and he has it to fasten his skin. I know that it's already been said that 9 came before LBP, but this is just more support for those saying that they aren't copying one another.

I hope that MM takes notice of the film, and some DLC is released based on this movie. I would love to have stitchpunk sackboys. Maybe some stickers and sounds, too.

And, albeit a bit unrelated to the topic itself, I couldn't see an LBP movie, but maybe a light-hearted television series.

Ah yes, the possibilities of displaying a crater-littered world after an outburst of bomb survival levels.

Just to help further that 9 isn't ripping off LBP, the characters' heads are more balloon shaped and smaller than Sackboy's gargantuan cranium. Their feet and hands are also different, being made out of scrapmetal than burlap/cloth/stichings/leather/meh. AAAAAAND, they're taller than a Sackboy.

Oh, and you can't if they're either a boy or a girl, unlike sackboys. No body-altering on 9's behalf, unfortunately.

Yes, but that story was made SOLELY to demonstrate how creating is done and to give people inspiration. LBP is all about user-created content.
