I think the point is that it's a first look at new technology. I had no idea what a PS3 slim looked like before that video, and it gives me a good idea of what the difference is.

It looked like just two USB ports though. Not sure if that's a good move.

You must have an older version of the large model. It seems people are calling it the "fat" one. The PS3 at launch had 4 USB, memory card slots, complete PS2 backwards combatability, and a few other little bells and whistles with it.

Sony stripped down some of the features to reduce overhead cost. I think models that were bought over a year after launch are the models in question. The short way to tell which one you have is to count the number of USB slots you have. 4 and it's a launch model, 2 and it's one of the newer ones with less bells and whistles.

Well I just preordered. I hope it last as long as my original has. I have had the 20gb version since release and it started acting up about a month ago. Was not much fun while I was towards the end of my goty level to have the system locking every 5 minutes. On the last request they sent me to make a modification it was a mad dash to make the fix and save the level before lock up ... but I got it.

I like the matte finish for sure. Never cared much for the glossy look. Wish they had added digital coax output.

Anyway there doesn't seem to be very much diffrence, IMO its just a scam to get sony more money.

It's not shiny enough!

But the 120 gb and lower power consumption are tempting... but I still like my 4 USB ports, memory cards, and some amount of PS2 playability on my 80gb.

I think I have the 40, but I keep thinking its the 80 GB.

With games frequently featuring mandatory 5gb installs and demos that are often over 1gb more space is always a good thing and thats without factoring in dlc psn games or videos.

Of course getting a bigger hdd for the ps3 is a simple process of buying a new 2.5'' hdd and swapping it with the one that came with the machine.

The slim really is a ugly looking piece of electronic. The PS3phat was soooo good looking!!

Anyhow, I hope my 60gig lasts for as long as I play PS3 games because I would be saddened to buy an inferior AND ugly model for replacement.

I agree with RangerZero. 60GB models for the win! I mean, isn't it one of the only models with all the external memory options? Plus, PS2 backwards compatibility (even though I mostly just use my PS2 xD;; ) nets it like an additional 150 million points. Also, if the link posted by adam9001 has an actual picture and not some kind of mock-up, then the slim is ugly.2009-08-19 21:38:00

Sony has it really rough with you guys. It seemed like the general consensus before was that everyone hated the fingerprint magnet surface of the older ones. Sony obviously listened, and they released the new one with a matte surface which collects no fingerprints. Now rather than complain about the fingerprints, people just complain that its ugly. People just love to complain and Sony can't win.2009-08-20 16:42:00

No complaints here. I have one on order. I like the matte look better but the glossy did not really bother me because once I hooked the system up I didnt sit there and pet it. The system is hooked up behind me and I tend to watch the 61" screen and not the system while Im playing The new design is not drastically different in appearance as far as shape goes. It looks to be thinner, not as wide but a bit deeper. The overall shape is similar.

I just don't touch mine (why would I?) so no fingerprint complaints here. And I don't think the slim is ugly cos of the matte finish, I just think the overall design is ugly.2009-08-20 19:10:00

Not sure how true this is, or if it would even make a noticeable difference but it may have an updated processor.

I guess I just don't see how one can think the larger PS3 is not ugly but think the smaller one is.. since they are more similar in design than not. The most obvious being different dimensions and finish. Not sure I like the buttons though.

It looks so dam(n) sexy.

If my warranty gave my 500 dollars back instead of giving me "a system of equivalent values" (a 20 GB PS3 (that's if I put the 20 GB one back in) is not equivalent to a 120 GB lol) I could so get it and have 200 dollars to spare.

I wish that was possible, I want it! =P

You can copy right? Because Im planning to buy a slim ps3 so I can have a ps3 right next to my bed. (Yes Im lazy, my main ps3 is 10 steps away..)

I'll use it for my entertainment rather than games.

You can have both accounts on the both ps3 right?

I was able to fit all my saved data on 1 8 GB USB Drive. It only took up like 10% of it lol.

And yes you can have your account on as many PS3's as you want.

I think there use to be a problem with some games not allowing save data to travel between different PS3s. If you copied a save file, then they would disable trophy support if the file was not on the machine that originally made it. I think there were other problems as well, but I've never actually tried it myself so I can't speak first hand about it.

The theory was to stop people from getting easy trophies just by copying save files. In practice though it is a problem if you buy a new PS3 and want to transfer your data across, either because the original PS3 broke down or you are changing models.

I'm not sure if this problem has been fixed though. But I don't think it will be as easy as just copying the save files across.

Yeah it did that for me in GTA when I put in my own HDD and transferred all the files.

But really. . who gives a crap about trophies? Lol.

your trophies are saved on the PSN server, you won't loose them.
and well, when you play a game and are logged in to PSN, the game will "link" your PSN to the savegame...meaning you won't get the annoying "this savedata is not yours, trophies not available" message.

PS: If you think your PS3 is going to break, be sure to press triangle on the trophy under the game section and click "synchronize with gameserver"

Well I remembered this morning that I have my Ipod 80 GB that stays connected to the HU in my car. I decided to plug it in to the PS3 and see if I could use the backup utility and sure enough it worked. Well at least it backed up to the Ipod. PS3 Slim arrives tomorrow so it remains to be seen if it will restore.

When I attempt to restore this to the new PS3, is it also going to restore my account info, friends list, etc.. ? I am hoping it does.

I tried backing up my PS3 data to an iPod with a hard drive and it didn't work when I tried to put it on my PS3. I tried transferring the files from my iPod to my computer, but they would cut off about 90% of the way through copying to my computer and then I wouldn't be able to do anything the corrupted PS3 files on my computer. My iPod just didn't play nice when I tried copying my PS3 files back onto it, it would basically disconnect itself from the PS3.

Tip: Don't use an iPod in replacement for an actually portable HDD.

It would work if you used a flash drive or external HDD.

They don't make 50 GB flash drives.

And I had always used my iPod as an external hard drive before, it just had connectivity issues with my PS3 for some reason. Luckily, I had mostly demos and other things. Nothing too important that I couldn't do again on the new system.

Since I have to buy a new one anyways, I might just go for the slim as the hardrive is bigger....then again....it is a very, very, VERY ugly "update".

Don't know yet, all depends on how much I can save this month by saving on food or whatever.

I know it probably will not work and you probably already know about resetting. With the system off put your finger on the power button and leave it there while the system turns on and you hear a second beep. Its worth a try.
