Those cool sacks cutouts - how?

Archive: 30 posts

I noticed many levels have non player "sacks" - cardboard with stickers/photos on it. I tried to make one but i can't - someone explain me how to do it?2009-08-18 18:22:00

If your talking about what I think you are then they are just stickers placed on a material and the material is shaped around the sticker, ie using the corner editing tool.2009-08-18 20:02:00

What you can do is enlarge the sticker as big as possible, it'll be easier to cut-out the shape, then when your finished you can re-size it back down.2009-08-18 20:14:00

if the corner editor is hard you can try using materials and pressing triangle to delete parts2009-08-18 20:24:00

dont use that no offence but it ups the complexity of the shape

I have never in all my years of creating used the corner edit tool. You can make points but you can't make curevs. Its much esier to use the square tool and do a process of cuting, then adding parts you cut away on accident, then smoothing it out to make it look good. And both tools up the complexity, you're wrong kernelm.2009-08-18 22:33:00

Now now children no fighting. Actually you can start by using the cut away method, then tune out the extra vertices using the corner editor. The corner editor gives you complete control over how many vertices there are, so it does tend to work out more efficient.

But for this, I'm with whale: make big, corner tool, make small again.

mmm do you know that if you select a material, then you can select the shape of it right.
like a heart shape, a round shape, but you can also select a sack boy shape.

So no need to cut it out.

Because not all sackboys are that shape you could start like that the coner edit. Outwards?

Hey hey hey no need to get agressive I was just pointing out my experience... sorry I didn't mean to offend you, I was just factually stating something, no need to start a fight teehee.
But here's how a do it:

1).take a pic of a sackboy, make it as much a close-up as you can without cutting off a head or a foot, ect. Also make sure the background is a different color than your sack, to make it a lot easier in the long run.

2).Stick the pic to a piece of plain cardboard and make it really big and in the front thin layer so you can zoom in and out when necessary.

3). Personally I dislike the corner editor tool, and it takes more practice so if you're a begginer I reccomend you just use a simple square shape from out of your poppit and use it to delete long straight lines off the edges of you sackboy. In game a sackboy may look smooth but they're actually pretty pointy when you zoom in on the details.

4). Clean it up. Continue to use the square tool to smooth the cutout out and fix any mistakes. Then when you're done, shrink it down to sacksize. Many people think a sack cutout would be hard to make, but they're actually easy if you know how to make them. If you still can't make a good one after all that, you should practice on stickers from your poppit. It took me a while to write all that, so hope that helped

What I do?
I just take a picture of the sack on a green screen, put it on cardboard, blow it up HUGE, then cut it out with the circle shape. Works for me!

I hurts the thermo, though.

What I usually do is take a picture, get a piece of material bigger than the picture, sticker the picture on it, make the material really big and I don't reccomend the corner editer tool, what usually do is cut away using materials.
Tip: For the material I reccomend dissolve as its better to shape with

You can make curves with the corner editing tools. Just make a lot of points. Not that hard. Besides, it doesn't have to be 1200% smooth, does it? You should really try using it for something, like cutting out a sticker. It's really helpful.

Picture of your sackthingymajiggy, zoomed in, slap it on a thin layer of cardboard and shape it with the cor-ner cor-ner corrrrrrrner editing tool! It takes practice!

And I do agree with Project_MK, doesn't have to be smoooooth, just an outline! If you resize it with many points for curves, it doesn't show up anyway so just don't make it, well, perfect

hey don't insult me my cutout skills are great and its fast and easy to cut off parts with a square tool unlike the corner edit tool, which is confusing, glitchy, and bad for curves, but you're right, you can just make a lot of corners, or you could save yourself 5 minutes by plopping an oval or circle down.2009-09-07 02:38:00

...I didn't insult you. I just stated my opinion. It doesn't really take five minutes to make a few corners, hell two or three will do. Besides, the oval you mentioned would make your object consume a bit more thermo, which is obviously bad. And how is the corner edit tool glitchy, or even confusing? It rather straight-forward, actually. You just get out of the grid, make your object big, and press X where you want to make/edit a corner, or triangle where you want to delete one. It takes practice, but it's not really that complex.

I'm with KernelM on this this one!!
I just recently started using the cornering tool and it is way better. With this tool you are only going to get the amount of edges needed in your vector. Sometimes people use the circle material tool, and that is the one that has the mos edges, making it a complicated shape.. think about it!
I can say it from experience. My first "Descent" level I did it with the material tool and the temp rose extremely fast. Mainly because I was doing caves.. I learned my lesson for the "Descent 2" and it ended up being way longer..

So KernelM for president!!!! lol

I too do cutouts, mostly as commissions for players who don't know how.

As such I've used both methods and the corner editor is faster. Now I just use the square to delete the excess cardboard around the sackperson. After that I use the corner editor for the sackperson, it's actually not that hard to make curves (for me at least). I just throw on the music from my custom soundtrack and pump out three to four cutouts in ten minutes.

The only glitch I've noticed with the corner editor is sometimes the stickers will slide one way or the other, resulting in constant minor corrections or rewinds.

Did you get the cutouts? If so, all I ask for in return is to bow down before me and worship your master! Bwahahaha!!

As for the whole oval thing...People use ovals? I just use a square, less **** to deal with.

Its not confusing.. Its not glitchy... Its not bad for curves.

Using a square makes more corners.

And cutting it down roughly with a shape then finishing it off with corner editing works well.

I make a regular size square of flat (makes it a lot easier if it's flat. If you try one that's not flat, you'll see why.) of cardboard, put my sticker on the cardboard, so the part I'm cutting out is visible, enlarge it by a lot, and use the circle shape as small as possible, and cut it out. If it gets to complicated, use the square tool and make a line through your shape, and fill it up when you're done. When your finished, shrink it back down. Hope you can understand this. =S2009-10-15 02:38:00

Practice on pre-existing humanoid stickers. BIG square, stick sticker in middle, with space on the edges, start at top, work clockwise. From the highest point on the sticker, put your first point there. Move a bit away, drag new point to next corner. Repeat.

The thing about corner tool that annoys most people, I think, is accidentally cutting off a corner when you're drawing another. This is why having "slack space" all around the sticker is important, and why it's important to go from one corner to the next nearest corner.

'Course, if you get good at this, you'll end up like me, with a bunch of costumes for both genders, because you're constantly dressing yourself up for characters.
