So...what are these...logic switches?

Archive: 12 posts

What are these things? They make no sense to me. Any information about them would be appreciated I'm trying to become a better creator, and these might be a good tool...2009-08-17 06:53:00

They are things you would normaly put out of sight of the level from where the player is at and they activate events using switches and materials.

For example:

A simple repeated pattern (for repeating sounds or turning a light on and off) would be a spinning circle of material with a magnetic key on one side going near to another piece of material with a mag key every time it completes a spin (which would then constantly activate something to a certain speed depending on how fast the circle of material is spinning.

Another simple thing would be the 'and' logic switch (where two inputs are required to activate one other event. A way to make this would be to make (above/ below the map) a box of dark matter and put two pieces of dissolve half way down the box (one above the other). Glue it on and above that make a piece of some other material and put it above the dissolve. Put a mag key on this material. At the bottom of the box put a mag switch on this (change the radius to just below the lowest piece of dissolve).
Put two or more (add the correct amount of dissolve pieces depending on how many) switches in the level that you want to be activated and hook them up to the dissolve. Now when all the switches are activated the acion will occur from what the mag switch at the bottom of the dark matter box is hooked up to.
There are othe ways to do this with pistons and things but I find this the simplest and best way for the thermometer/ reliability.

There are many other logic gates to experiment with, just mess around with different combinations using the game physics and switches.

Best bet for any kind of info you might desire is to do a search in the Tutorial section

Here's one that is full of logic info that is nicely done.

But to answer your question.. Logic switches are how you make your bag of stuff much much smarter.

Have Fun!

If you need the actual gates, send me a message on PSN, i have created most of them and can send you them.2009-08-17 10:56:00

I have a very noob friendly switch tutorial. You'll become a much better creator, or your money back(if it cost anything but luckily it doesn't)
My psn is incinerator22 and the level is called switches, tricks, and logic concepts for experts and dummies alike. I'd appreciate if you played it, but you're the one who would benefit

I would suggest playing Netty's Logic Lesson to learn what logic gates are and how to use them. Plus, you get all the switches used, which is really helpful.2009-08-18 17:57:00

The "logic" part comes from Bitwise Logic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitwise_logic)

Let's say the switches are "bits" which can either be on or off. (Which they are.)

an AND logic switch is something that causes something to happen if two particular switches are on ... an OR logic switch is something that causes something to happen if either of some particular switches are on... etc... .

Netty's Logic Lesson is an excellent suggestion. ^^. There are an infinite number of ways to make these sorts of things, the sky's the limit.

Confused yet, lol.

Media Molecule made a video showing off some simple logic switches, and its much easier to understand everything when its in video form.

It can be confusing... Easiest thing is play with the switches.. Do simple things. For example watch the Mm video again and attempt to replicate some of those and what they are doing with them.

For example.. is there something in particular you are attempting to do? If you are simply reading the switches as AND etc.. then yeah.. It might help if you attempt to apply some of that logic to a task and let us know what you are stuck on. That might help allow us to explain it a bit.

I'm going to, starting with a rotating switch, and work it up from there...2009-08-23 00:15:00

About your levels, i played the one that had 20 logic gates. I wanted to use them, but they all had those pillars with instructions that i wasn't allowed to remove. You may not adjust community objects. Would you fix that, please?
