Switches help - shouldn't be too hard

Archive: 4 posts

Right so I have a problem with some switches, its probably just me but I cant think how to do it.
I'll try and keep it simple

Sponge above a pit with a grab switch on. When its grabbed its shouldn't do anything.

If the player falls down then I need to sponge to come down and stay down until they grab it.

When it is grabbed it needs to take them back to the original position of the sponge.

This is really frustrating me! so I thought i'd ask on here for some help.

Thanks in advance,

Its kind of tricky because you also want the sponge to do nothing at first. I'm sure its possible though, i'll think of some ways.

EDIT: Ok, yes, I have a way.

You want something that will push a small block with a mag key on one way if something happens, and back the otherway to cancel that action if something happens. E.G:

Block pushed to the right = activates piston up
Block pushed to the left = sends piston back down (directional..)
The "sponge to do nothing at first" can be accomplished by stopping the block being pushed by using a dissolve material block and trapping it from moving. Then the dissolve material gets dissolved when you fall into the pit, and the block is free to move.

Have a sensor switch in the pit, connected to a piston in a logic gate somewhere. Have then a grab switch connected to the sponge, connected to a piston on the opposite side of the logic gate. In between these two logic gate pistons is a block with a mag key on it that can move freely. So when you fall into the pit, the block is pushed to the right, lowering the piston & sponge, but when you grab the sponge, the block is pushed back to the left, making the piston go up. Of course, if you fall back into the pit, the sensor switch is activated, making the block get pushed over again, lowering the psiton.

This is only a rough idea. You may need to use a few more and/or gates for the pistons.

Basically just needs an OR switch.

If you're in the pit the direction is DOWN for the winch.
But if you're not in the pit OR you're grabbing the sponge, then UP.

-----------------------------
|==[K] |[S]|[K]========|
-----------------------------

Where:
-- is dark matter or whatever
== is pistons
[K] is mag keys
[S] is mag switch

The piston on the left is for the grab switch (set to directional, of course).
The piston on the right is for the proximity switch (or whatever type of switch you want to trigger the escape, also set to directional, but this one also set to inverted).
The switch (fixed in the center), again set to directional, is attached to the winch on the sponge.

Should do the trick. If they haven't fallen in yet, nothing - the sponge just hangs on the fully retracted winch. But when they fall into the pit, the winch will extend and only be retracted again if they grab the sponge.

Thanks for the fast reply,

I tried making a "switch" like you said but had problems with the pistons and the freely moving block. - Randomly, the block would appear behind one of the pistons which would make the "switch" useless. It could be that I was using the flipper option idk.

Before when I said that the switch should do nothing when grabbed, I could change it so that the sponge will move up (as it is already up it will appear to do nothing.

This may now be easier to make:

Grab the sponge and it goes up to the top.
Fall in pit and it goes to the bottom.
Dont grab and it stays where it is

So maybe I need some sort of reset switch?

Thanks for you help,

EDIT:

Have used your idea but without the dissolvable material

I used your piston and moving block idea. Mag key on block. Starts off to the right and activates the mag switch. The mag switch is set to directional and attached to the piston.
Grabbing the sponge moves the left piston (as the block starts to the right, it has no affect.)
Fall down pit and right piston moves the block to the left. This deactivates the mag switch so the sponge goes down. When it is grabbed, the left piston moves the block to the right.

Thanks for your help,
Wouldn't have been able to do it otherwise.
