Console gamer detected

Half Life 2 is one of the best FPS's ever made, it was the first game to feature a tool that could manipulate gravity (now commonplace), a story that uses no cutscenes, stellar graphics (for the time), excellent voice work for the time, a physics engine in an FPS (new for the time)

It's hard for modern FPS players to appreciate Half Life because it STARTED everything that exists in modern games. Name any modern FPS, and I can name AT LEAST one way that Half Life influenced it

I'd imagine that you probably don't like Metal Gear Solid or Resident Evil 4 then?

It's a shame

Back on half-life. Sorry I said what I said, but you can't trash Portal. You just can't. That game had TRUE breakthroughs in actual gameplay, not cutscenes or voiceing. And I don't think that even for the time you can call half-life's graphic's stellar. Also, a story that features no cutscenes. Wow. Why is that good?

I'm sorry, have you PLAYED the game? I can tell you, not only were they EXCELLENT for their time, they can compare to the graphics of many modern FPS's as well. And the no cut scenes is good because IT WORKED, and not only did the story manage to work without cut scenes, making it extremely smooth, it's one of the best played out stories in FPS's EVER. On your Portal comment, he never trashed it, and had there been to Gravity Gun in Half Life, there would have been no Portal. And please don't talk smack if you haven't played it. It's not nice.

Update me in the mornin' Cog.

Ok here's some stuff I learnt:

Valves games never really get updates on the PS3 because of what they made their games for, and Gabe Newell said they aren't trying to improve their PS3 games or any future PS3 games of theirs.

The helicopter pilot at the end of the No Mercy campaign was infected and that's how the helicopter crashes at the start of 'Crash Course' which will be free for PC L4D players

There is definitely an amusement park level in L4D 2.

I noticed a riot cop zombie which is probably a rare infected like the hazmat zombie and the mud man.

Also Gabe Newell says that Portal 2 is more important than CS2 at the moment.

I think that's it, no news on Ep. 3!

Hm, I'm surprised nobody's brought up LITTLEBIGPLANET FOR THE PSP HELLOOOOO?!??!
My favorite game ever will soon be PORTABLE!
October 27th ^.^
I'm getting the PSPgo too, just because my PSP isn't working and I don't want to pay $75 to replace it. PSPgo looks awesome anyway, plus, no more stupid UMDs.
Oh and L4D 2 is going to be pretty sweet, I build forts and stuff in the original - I'm a genius with the console :o
I might not get Portal 2 or Episode 3, those games don't interest me that much.
As for Counter-Strike 2, I'll have to wait and see. I ADORE CS:S, especially deathrun and bhop. Can't wait to see what's in store for the new one though. And if it has achievements, then that would be epic.
Which leads me to another great idea - LBP PSP achievements! :O How epic would that be?!? Achievements on the PSP!
(I can't believe you just read all of that, it really means a lot to me. Really, it does.)

I don't like how everyone is flipping out about Valve not releasing games on the PS3 but releasing them on the 360. They would only release them on he PC, but isn't it incredibly easy to port a PC game to the 360?

Oh, and Gabe Newell is fat.

What are you talking about? Half Life 2 is a slow paced shooter that, from a console gamer's perspective, is probably way more about story than gameplay, but I have no clue what's going on. It does a really bad job of explaining anything. As soon as I'm thrown into the game there are humans with gas-masks with glow sticks who, if you throw cans at, they get mad. Then you run around, talk to some people who all know you for some reason, pile up some boxes and then the box police get on your case and you have helicopters and more gas mask people coming at you.

Half Life 2 barely influenced anything. How many shooters have you putting a washing machine in some floating shopping cart to open a gate or something stupid like that. Goldeneye influenced everything, not Half Life 2.

I don't know the history on Half Life for certain because i wasn't their when 1 or 2 were released. Considering what time it came from HL1 was a really fun fps compared to most others that i'd played!

And HL2 was just awesome, i love the story and they pretty much perfected the level design!

If you think the game doesn't have any cutscenes then you obviously haven't played it... it begins with one xD

How do graphics like this:http://www.thecoopyears.co.uk/mod/halflife1.jpg
compare to FPS games nowadays?
And Portal was not influenced in any way by Half-life. It was first conceptualized as Narbacular Drop (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narbacular_Drop), which was later furthered into Portal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portal_(video_game)).
No comment on the cutscenes, as it is hopeless.

About cutscenes, I don't care if they "take me out of gameplay" or not. In Half Life 2, you can't do anything while the people talk besides run around. I don't really see a difference. You still have to listen to people babble on about a story that isn't understandable at all.2009-08-16 06:32:00

And Portal was not influenced in any way by Half-life.

Portal uses the Source engine. Valve made the Source engine to improve upon the engine they used for the first Half-Life.

So you're technically wrong. :3

And to say that Half-Life wasn't influential is kind of dumb, honestly. Both games did a lot of things with AI, physics, weapon design, graphics, and narration that hadn't really been done at the time in most video games. Now they've been used to the point that we sort of take them for granted, now.

Now that that's over, I just want to say that I really, really, really want a sequel to Opposing Force.

That is HALF-LIFE not HALF-LIFE 2 look for the right game.
As for hl2 and portal , both games were unbelievable in terms of gameplay , humour (yes hl2 has some humour), voice acting, graphics (for the time) physics
and the characters themselves.

iiiijujube obviously just had a skim read of wikipedia of a half life article instead of trying the game as he obviously thought that hl2 was hl.
So iiiijujube how about trying Portal and half life 2 rather than coming here and saying how rubbish they are?

The Half Life series has produced among the best FPS games ever seen to PC and console. While i never truly got to play the original Half Life properly (completed it well in to the PS2/3 generation) i could still see how influential it was for its time. Half Life 2 was truly spectacular though. Anyone who calls it a generic or less FPS clearly does not understand what makes videogames great, or it's just simply not their cup of tea.

Even though I completed HL2 way before I barely touched 1, I could still mostly understand what was going on, and it's just one of those games I can play over and over (unlike many modern FPS games where you complete it once... and find no reason to go back). The story really sucks you in, along with the characters, and the fact that you are always in control, even during cutscenes really helps the sense of immersion in the game.

The Half Life games are nothing short of amazing and personally I can't wait for Ep 3. They're not flawless by any means, but they are among the best going. If you can, always opt for the PC versions though.

I do have a slight worry about Portal 2. Is it really needed? Portal was a pretty much perfect game, and doing another one just seems like its for the sake of it for the fans. So it may turn out a dissapointment. What they should do is implement the Portal gun into HL Ep3. Now that would be awesome.
L4D2 should be great too, only got the first one last week.

If you would look at my earlier post before getting into a rant about how I don't have the right game *coughdeccough*, you might see that I wasn't talking about half-life 2. I was talking about the first half-life. Number one. Alright? Cool your jets.
By the way, I have played half-life. Didn't enjoy it...

Before Half Life 2, physics engines, modular engines, in-game cutscenes, and high-quality voice acting weren't around.

Halo 3, Killzone 2, Doom 3, Portal (to some extent; albeit conceptual), etc...

Your resistance hardly surprises me, most console gamers aren't aware of games like this

Portal 2 is as necessary as Ep 3!

Portal 2 was being planned since day 1 of the Portal release, so it can't be because of fans if they had no chance of giving feedback.
If you paid attention to the storyline of Portal and Ep 2 you'd notice that the storylines are meant to merge together somehow.

It seems Ep 3 takes place near the Borealis ship which has something to do with Aperture Science, and it tells you that this ship and it's entire harbour was mysteriously teleported to the artic so they're looking for some sort of portal device (the type that black mesa failed to create?).

Meanwhile it looks like the character from Portal is teleported to an area similar to White Forest which is where Ep 2 is based, maybe the sequel picks up where she left off.
I've heard though that it might be a prequel where you play or get involved with the owner of aperture science, who slowly goes insane through the course of the game. Found that on an article a while back when Valve were looking for a new voice actor

There's a lot going on anyway it's kind of like a piecing a puzzle together, that's why i find the story so interesting.
We're still trying to figure out who the G-Man is too.

Woah... never thought of it like that... thanks! I didn't realise a Portal 2 was always planned. That's okay then. I thought it was just going to be another series of test chambers and maybe something else then. But if it is in a more natural environment that would be awesome.
Man, Ep 3 is going to be awesome though. Any ideas on release date?
