| Nausicca of the Valley of the Wind Have you read the comics of Nausicca? I ended up reading the comics before I saw the film and ended up very dissapointed. The film cuts out so many characters, places and story threads. If you liked the film I'd highly recommend you pick up the comics to get the full story. But anyway Seven Samurai is my favourite movie. Probably the closest anyone has ever gotten to making a perfect movie. Pacing, characterisation, action, everything is just so well balanced and every frame of every shot has its reason for being there. There's so much directors can learn from this film. Like how it's not how great the stunts or special effects are that make a good action scene but rather how engaging the characters are. I really want to read them though. I don't know why I liked that movie so much. I even got a ringtone of Nausicaa singing(humming) during the flashback scenes. And even though they left parts out of the movies, it's still better then what they did for the first english release. | Park Chan Wook is awesome. Oldboy is an absolute masterpiece. I was furious there was going to be a hollywood remake and so relieved when it got shelved. I think 300 is not a question of screenplay, it is more a question of aesthetic (that people like or not), a visual experience. | People, the thread is favourite movie, not best movie. I can understand why some would say 300, although I can clearly see (and articulate) its flaws. Likewise, I can understand why some would list e.g. Dirty Dancing as their favorite movie, even though I personally hate it with a passion. As for me, my favourite movie is without a doubt Fight Club. And yes, I would understand those who don't list it amongst their favourites. | How can anyone say that the story behind 300 was weak.. do you realise this actually happened in 480 BC! If anyone likes this sort of thing, there is also a book by a guy called Valerio Massimo Manfredi, who wrote "Spartan" and is, in part, about this tragic battle.. very good! As for films, Lord of The Rings still stands out clear in my mind. This was a masterpiece in every way by Peter Jackson. Of course, it helps to have been given so much content by Tolkien, but the adapted screenplay, visuals and acting are unsurpassed. That said, I also like some of the historical films, like "Memoirs of a Geisha" and "The Pianist". | I'm a big Fight Club fan myself. There was a period after it came out where I began to become really really sick of "Fight Club fans", and it turned me off the movie so much that i pretty much shelved it for YEARS. A little bit like The Matrix, remember that? If you saw it when it first came out, there's a 90% chance that it blew your ****ing mind right out of your skull. Fast forward a year and you probably rolled your eye every time you saw "bullet time" in a movie, or anytime anyone mentioned "The Matrix". Happily, that subsided, and I was able to get away and return to genuine enjoyment of that movie (Fight Club I mean). It's a great example of hyper-stylized filmmaking working FOR the movie in every capacity. It's hard to criticize the movie for being so stylized and breaking the fourth wall, with characters talking directly to the audience and even interacting directly with the "film" celluloid itself, literally at times... because without this stuff, it wouldn't work - it wouldn't tell the story, it would fall flat and lose that exuberance that so strongly suggests "insane" throughout the movie. Some people denigrate it for the ending, but I actually think I prefer the movie's ending to the book's. The book ends on a note of PITCH PITCH black comedy, it's insanely dark and disturbing, while still having that bone dry, cynical-as-hell sense of humor that Palahniuk's so good at. | My favorite movie is This is Spinal Tap. ^_^ I think the comedy is some of the most brilliant comedic writing I've ever encountered. The stonehenge scene made me literally fall out of my chair and laugh so hard I was crying. No other movie has ever done that to me. Oh god I love that movie. Their ad-libbing is a riot. Christopher Guest especially, he goes so off the wall! Sometimes you can tell that the guys are just a HAIR'S breadth from totally falling out of the scene and cracking up. The special edition's great too because it includes nearly an entire sequel's worth of new content, also full of hilarity. They've never topped it. Best in Show, A Mighty Wind, and For Your Consideration were all pretty funny, but nothing even remotely approaching Spinal Tap. | I'm also a fan of A Mighty Wind because I grew up with my parents listening to folk music and dragging me to see Peter Paul and Mary and The Mama's and the Papas (well, not really DRAGGING per se, I enjoyed it!) but I agree that it's not even close to the humor that's present in Spinal Tap. My first memory of watching that movie was on a rainy day at the beach. We thought we had accidentally grabbed a documentary, and then it just got progressively funnier as the movie continued. It's going to be very hard for any other comedy to top that experience for me. Both of those movies have achieved the rare disctinction of HURTING me with laughter. When I was a younger man, I keeled over watching Ace Ventura and Austin Powers too - But these movies haven't held onto the comedy as well. They don't age as well. If anyone here hasn't really considered watching Charlie Chaplin movies, allow me to HIGHLY recommend it. Modern Times is a great place to start. I saw the film before I read the book and this was about the only thing that stood out to me as being significantly different from the book. Just watched it again last night with a friend of mine.
