Mm should be more involved

Archive: 29 posts

While I completely understand Mm's reason for remaining laissez-faire as far the user created levels go, I think it would be nice if they became just a bit more involved with the community. I'm not saying I want them taking over the cool levels page or anything like that, but I think it would be spectacular if Mm had a world based on their picks of the month or something.
Now, I realize that Mm does pick levels that they enjoy and put them on a spotlight page on their website. I also understand that they took two creators from the community with them to the comic-con this year. But I think it would be nice to feel Mm's presence in the actual game, not in the community outside of the game. Think about it, wouldn't it be wonderful if Mm handpicked a couple of levels and made them show up in the same way that the "cool levels" world pops up when you view the community levels in-game.
It is just a thought, but I think it would be nice. It is not too obtrusive, but shows that they are indeed keeping an eye out for their baby.

They do select their favorite levels from the community, just because they haven't made it any easier for you to find them doesn't mean they aren't getting involved.

Usually only people from Europe. That's how they ruin the fun.

Are you saying they only spotlight levels made by creators in Europe?

I don't think the area the creator lives in makes a difference to them

Yes, I suppose I would much rather them take the time make level packs and whatnot, (I loved the Metal Gear Solid levels they created for the mini-pack).

I guess what I was really trying to suggest is that they should make it easier for us to find the levels they find noteworthy. In other words, I think it would be nice if you could do this stuff in-game, rather than through the internet. One of the things Bungie did right was to implement this feature; they highlight levels they think are awesome in-game and it is really nice being able to simply jump to that level.

They're already working on the level portal though

You can browse all of the levels on your pc and link people to them or select the ones you want to play, and then those levels that you selected will be there for you to play automatically when you next play the game.

No I mean like they usually bring only European people to the event or something, unlike I never see a Mexican go.
This ruins the "international" part.

Well it's not like there's an event every week and you're missing out on anything

They only pick 2 people out of 1000s that play the game, it's hardly as if you or me were going to get picked!

Besides Mm are based in England so it's much easier for them to take people that live nearby.

Oh really? I didn't know; that sounds like a cool feature. But I guess that is also part of my point. I had no idea about it... how many others don't?

Anyways, I'm really not trying to get into an argument here and I don't want you to think I am being at all antagonistic. Like the forum says, this is just a suggestion.

Good point, but this game is like a worldwide sensation.
Others should at least have a chance.
And don't you see Japanese levels? They get like 1000 plays a day.

It doesn't really make a difference though because people in Europe don't really have a chance either.

There's like 1-2 big events every year and they take 2 people. That's only 4 people a year!

It isn't a competition they just take 2 random popular creators that live nearby!
You shouldn't feel as though you're missing out, i live in England and i know i have 0% chance of going anywhere with them but it doesn't bother me.

Besides EU is mistreated by SCEE compared to the US and JP so it's only fair that we get something nice

I agree. They should do what they did with the survival challenges that time and post their favourites on the info moon. But they need to be updated MUCH more regularly.2009-08-13 22:15:00

Oh, even that would be nice. I was so excited when I saw them post something in the "news" section of the info moon. I played every one of those levels... but that was like... 6 months ago. I know they are probably busy there, but don't tease us!

I think it is a good idea, it would really be time-consuming for them with their game-fixing and whatnot.2009-08-13 22:21:00

It is quite time consuming to play levels and judge them, but the strange thing is that they do it already and post up Mm picks on their website. Since that is the majority of the work then I don't see why they couldn't update something in-game, rather than their website.

People always forget that Mm is a team!!

The people that play the levels are the community managers who i'd assume have a lot of spare time exploring the community and gathering suggestions and popular levels on forums like this.

But the people that actually program and add stuff to the game are busy creating new features such as the level portal, online create, new enhancements and whatever else they might have in mind behind the scenes

I think the introduction of a website similar to "Sackbook" will quickly alleviate this issue. It's in the works, at least last time I checked. It's supposed to be the next major release from MediaMolecule.2009-08-13 23:27:00

Well hopefully you are right. Still though, I would like to see something in-game.

I think this sackbook thing would be better than something in-game!

I'd much rather browse for levels on my pc when i'm not playing LBP, and when Mm or anyone else does their next spotlight they just need to provide their links and you can play them as soon as you next play the game

That way anyone can do the same thing that you're proposing Mm do when they select levels!

It sounds like a fine idea to be able to browse the internet, click on a link and magically have the level pop up for you the next time you boot up the game. And I think this sounds like an especially good idea for fan site's like LBPC since they have no official presence within Mm or LBP.
But Mm should do something in-game. They did it before with the survival challenges and it was a great idea that was greeted with warm reception from all. Who would complain about Mm posting these sorts of things on the info moon in game?

All this internet stuff is great and I am sure it will work great and open up great user created levels to a lot of people, but you simply cannot deny the allure of being able to pop in the LBP game disc and check out the info moon for Mm newest level picks. Besides that, if I had not joined LBPC and made this thread I never would have known about Sackbook website or any other of the proposed idea's. In-game messages is the broadest way for Mm to be involved in the community; a majority of LBP players do not join forum groups or check out websites for the community levels. They simply go to the cool levels page and that is that. In-game would be the best way to reach the most players, from people who don't use the internet to people that do.

You make a good point that people not involved with the community won't know about these spotlights.

I guess it's just another reason to get more involved though

Exactly, the updates are there since Winter of 2008.

Busy? I think that's a speculation that they're doing something big.

But w/e. I just wish they'd play more underrated levels and choose them as top picks :

Agreed. Besides, I am sure they could hire some kid who is eager to get his foot in the door of a development house to play user created levels for 8 hours a day, sifting through all of the stuff. Heck! I would do that job!

Mm are more involved than any developers I've seen in my relatively short life. When I was playing Resistance 2, I didn't hear anything from Insomniac.

Granted, it would be nice to have In game Mm Picks.

You are right, they have been doing a lot more than plenty of other developers. Perhaps I am being a bit harsh on them because I expect a bit more from them than others.

But, and this may shock some people, I am somewhat of an Xbox fan  and I personally think that many xbox developers have been more involved than Mm has been on games that really don't deserve as much attention as LBP does. I mean, let's face it, a single player game like Fallout 3 really didn't need to spend so much time developing downloadable content as a multi-player game does, yet they have. Sony is a bit far behind on the online band-wagon (although I do love that it is free).

Anyways, I don't want to start a PS3-Xbox 360 debate. They are pointless and stupid and I won't have it. I only brought it up to make a very specific point. That point being that if any game deserves special treatment after it's release, it is LBP, and if other developers (such as Bungie and Bethesda) are putting in more effort after launch than LBP (not that I am trying to say that Mm has been lazy or slack IN ANY WAY) then I think that is a bit of a problem. What it boils down to is I want to see Mm get a bit more involved in their community, such as they did with the survival challenges on the info moon a while back. I want to see more than just new costumes every two weeks.

Mhm, it's a nice idea and something (Although lower priority than many other things) I'd like to see Mm do. But seeing as they haven't even patched the fact that on your profile page it continues to have a broken counter of "Play - create - share" that always stays on 0 for each no matter what you do, I don't expect they'll be implementing this anytime soon XD2009-08-16 22:13:00

Yeah... what is that all about. I thought I had to do something online or something to get that little counter to do something... so confusing!
