In 1842-43, Augusta Ada King (born Byron), Countess of Lovelace wrote a method for calculating a sequence of Bernoulli numbers for Charles Babbage?s Analytical Engine. This method is recognised as the world?s first computer program, and so she is considered to be the ?first computer programmer?. She also foresaw the capability for computers to go beyond calculations and number crunching, and holds the world record score for Breakout.

This guy we picked up in medieval Mongolia, in the year 1269. Please welcome, the very excellent barbarian – Mister Genghis Khan! This is a dude, who 700 years ago totally ravaged China, and who were told, two hours ago, totally ravished Oshmans’ Sporting Goods!

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is widely considered to be the most significant and influential composer of the Classical era. The musical prodigy began composing in 1757 at the age of 5 and wrote his first symphony just 3 years later. Inspired by the music around him, he went on to create some of the most popular and outstanding masterpieces in classical music, including the popular 80s song – Rock me Amadeus.

Absolutely - this music track is beautiful, but to have the chance to cut it up and just have those gorgeous pan pipes (shakuhachi?) sounds on their own *sigh*

Good stuff though - actually I love the decorations too. And the Sounds FX.

Verdict: Worth Buying

Awwww maaaaaan!? That's a bummer.... I was really hoping Mm would start including more interactive tracks with their packs.

Oh well, at least the pack is getting solid reviews so far... can't wait till this evening when Canada's store updates.

It's a great pack, the Pantheon background is very nice and there are an incredible amount of stickers to collect, as well as some cool accessories, objects and sound effects. I am a little disappointed however, at the music track. It's a great song but I so much wish it were interactive. Still it is an awesome, almost epic song which ends a little too soon but will make you wait impatiently for the loop to begin again.
All in all, a great level kit that, in my opinion, is even better than the Monsters kit. :star::star::star::star:

They built the time machine out of existing materials. So, you could build it if you want.

I'm really loving the pack. I did however notice that the gargoyle object, while looking spectacular, takes up 2 bars of the thermometer. Rendering it almost useless. I really like the music, though it's a shame you can't edit it. The sounds and materials are also brilliant.2009-08-13 20:01:00

Theres some very cool stuff. I've been waiting for it to finish a section of my level, and start the new one, and its fit perfectly.

I think the Monster Pack had better stuff that you'll use more frequently, but all of the stuff is still of a very high quality. I forgot to check the background though

Waitwhatthegargoyledoes?
It sucks 2 bars?
I didn't notice it since I was spamming object to eliminate the "aura" that new objects has and that makes me nervous.
Anyway, the costumes are great, I really enjoyed Boudica's and Mozart's wigs, and Gengis' hat and the AWESOME beard.

I haven't seen everything yet but i was a bit disappointed by this, maybe i just got too hyped up about it

I didn't like the materials as much as i thought i would and the background is terrible, but the music is the best yet!

I still have to dig through the stickers and decorations but i rarely use either of those anyway

The tapestry material has Rex and some other letters written on it which I assume is code. Rex is their art dude who probably drew the art on the material.2009-08-13 21:25:00

nah i think it's about William the Conqueror, i learned that in history in school!

i literally (by luck) checked the store AS SOON as it updated, bought it and when i finished the level, i was...... 1ST ON THE SCOREBOARD!!! :arg:

ahem.

I'm probably not now. Anyway, the pack is awesome, making a short Roman level now!

Bah! The U.S. store still hasn't updated, and I'm leaving for a week in a moment... and level level I've slaved over the past two weeks is completely roman themed. I was planning on inserting new things and changing many of the materials, as well as adding the new music and background, but now I need to wait for quite a while .

Curses!

It's very likely that they work on more than one level at a time. So it takes 10 weeks to make a professional level, but they can work on two (sometimes even three) at a time if they're at different stages of development. E.G. they could be simultaneously polishing one level, halfway through another, and conceptualizing a third, allowing them to finish these three levels in about 15-25 weeks instead of 30.

It only took over half of a bar or notch on the thermo for me. Weird.

How much it takes up will depend on what you already have in the level. If another thermometer is dominating, you won't see any increase at all.

I guess it's all about optimization.

Bought this earlier and overall it's a great pack. The decorations are really good and i can see a lot of stuff in this pack being very useful on all sorts of levels.

For anyone who doesn't have it yet I put all the stuff in a blank level so you can take a look before you buy.

With regards to the thermo I didn't take note of each item but I can tell you that I simply placed stickered cardboard as a thin layer background to hold all the items for display and used the 'Pantheon' background you get with the pack and the thermo is at about 3/4 full. Wouldn't leave much room for gameplay if you used it all at once. Not that you ever would of course.

Anyway it's up there if you want to take a look first. Just search my levels.

Wow, 156 new items + the 9 you got at the scoreboard! I know that it says all of this in the first post, but it's still amazing to actually see it all. I hope it doesn't give you a "Profile Full" message.

I'm definitely getting this on my next trip to the Playstation Store.

Once again, amazing work MediaMolecule.

The history level is just awful, poor atmosphere, no creativity. Given that it's not MGS-esque in terms of scope, it could've at least TRIED like the monster pack. Regardless, the materials are decent at best, the stickers are good, the sounds look simply AWESOME, and the song seems good...

The costumes could be much better...

GUYS SOMEONE HELP ME OUT HERE PLEASE.....I THINK THIS HISTORY PACK IS FILLING UP MORE OF OUR PROFILE SPACE....MY GAME WAS FINE AND WHEN I BOUGHT THIS ALL WAS WELL...THEN I STARTED PLAYING THE LEVEL TO OBTAIN ALL THE ITEMS AND OBJECTS, NO PROB...BUT NOW EVERYTIME I QUIT THE GAME MY PS3 DOES THE TRIPLE BEEP AND REBOOTS...AND WHEN I CHECK MY GAME SAVE ITS THE LAST SAVE I HAD NOT THE CURRENT SAVE( I KNOW THIS BECAUSE I ALWAYS CHANGE MY COSTUME TO MAKE IT NOTICEABLE) AND THE WORST PART ABOUT THIS WAS THAT THE GAME DIDN'T TELL ME THAT MY PROFILE WAS FULL OR ANYTHING...I DON'T EVEN THINK THE SACKBOY RUNNING HDD AUTOSAVE WAS SHOWING UP NEITHER....

oh also for anyone who's about to tell me that it isn't the pack...i did a test of just loading up the last save...and quitting the game and no triple beeps happened...and obviously no save game change

but the triple beep reboot happened 2 times to me...and it sucks because i had just finished playing and hearting every community spotlight level :'(

idk whats going on but someone help this really sucks if i just wasted money on a pack that just filled up my profile....

hopefully this is something that has happened to everyone and forces Mm to increase our space or let us use our HDD to save as much as we want this really is a let down and it just killed me inside

Uhm, played a showcase level. Can't say it convinced me to buy it now. The song is good but it would be a lot better if it was an interactive track. Not a fan of modern bit at the end. :/

I picked this up last night.. I think the coolest part is the sound object and some of the stickers. Great sounds!!!

The music is cool and having an extra tune is wonderful, but as others have mentioned I wish it had have been interactive. The stickers I was most excited to see are the line art ones with transparent background. I love having extra ones of those around to play with over the top of color stickers.

The background may come in handy as well!!

exactly. He was talking about building a level in the main game which is obiously far more detailed.

doesn't take long to put together a gallery level like this. Especiallywhen they have access to that sticker cutout tool.

It may not take long to put the gallery level together, but I'm guessing it takes a long time to design all of the sounds, materials, objects, stickers, music, backgrounds, etc that are in it.

Yup, it's definately worth half a mcDonalds meal Seriously I don't see how anyone can say it's "not worth the money".

Hell the sounds and that persian gryphon decoration are enough to warrant the cost.

Obviously if you genuinely can't afford it then that's something different

wait, wasn't it only a gallery level in the pack? they aren't professional :arg:

they're from Mm, they are of course professional.

Anyway, I think they are working on the next level pack at the same time too, thanks to Cartman's comments on page 3. Thanks man.

This pack is all gravy folks! The new background is cool because it has several different looks contained within the "Pantheon"... very useful. The song is quite simply brilliant but with grow tedious in little time, you can get so much more mileage out of an interactive track. The sounds are different and unique from what has come before... a first! The materials and objects simply needed... hmmm, whats that leave?

Stickers. So many your eyes will tear. Some that will also be very useful for the creative and uncreative alike. Even the costumes are cheap this time around, and if I may add, they contain some great bits-with good detail.

The gallery itself is pretty bland and devoid of any innovation or creative spark... there are no: Cool! or How'd that...? moments. Which makes me wonder if as creators we've out-paced our masters?

I am very happy. What are you waiting for?

a Ratchet and Clank pack.

I just look at the gallery level and think it's pretty bland, but there is soo much stuff for creators to use! AMAZING.

Now my PSN Wallet is empty...

Yay! I bought both the Kit and the Costumes, which were my first costume set. I like the costumes - in fact, the best part of them is that it is just soooo much fun to scratch Genghis Khan's beard! Here's how you do it:
Put on one angry face, so he looks like a ferocious barbarian in thought. Then, move your arm to the bottom-ish of his beard and tap R2/L2 to make him scratch it!

I also really like the Kit. I haven't played with it much yet, but I love the music (although of course like everyone I wish it was interactive), the decorations are epic, especially for pod decorating
I haven't checked out the stickers and sounds much yet, but the background looks very good as well.

Great buy!

I had the same thought!
The gargoyle, the bell, the gothic stickers and decorations, and even some of the romans elements can create a very nice old Paris/cathedral of NotreDame level....

(You should go for that, I'm sure you can do great as usual)

Picked it up last night and I'm really liking it so far. Great stickers in the gothic architecture part - the black lines with transparent background style ones are especially useful. Interesting materials too. Haven't played with the sound effects yet but so far I'm very happy with this pack. 2009-08-14 16:59:00

Don't know, might give it a try, but I'm currently working on a new little level that I hope I will finish (I already started and gave up 3 ideas/levels..)

To go back to the thread, I really like this pack also.
It has some high quality elements (objects, decoration, sounds...).
Background and music are good also but the music is too short and not interactive

Anyway always good to have new stuff, and it surely worth the price..!

Ha! Nice one.

I've already told some one they 'Genghis Kan't'

In fact, I think it was Zwollie, who at the time was singing along to the Pink Panther theme tune (movie, not cartoon). It was quite surreal to see and hear a singing Belgian dressed as Genghis. LBP sure is diverse.

(NOTE: I still love you, Zwol. And your singing cleared up my ear infection!)

Well after having the pack for almost a day now I've spent time going through eveything. Overall, I'm pleased but I do have disappointments with the pack... mainly the sound objects.

First of all, we only get thirteen new sounds... disappointing for a pack that's supposed to cover the history of the world. While they are all new sounds that don't seem to resemble anything we already have (with the exception of the caveman sound which is extremely reminiscent of the sumo yell, and the mud pit which I'll get to in a minute), they simply don't do much for me. The most original and likely the most useful ones are the clock chime, clock tick, sword draw, and the best in my opinion... the time warp sound (absolutely a great sound!). Four out of twelve... not great odds if you ask me.

The dinosaur is just another "large monster sound" that I would lump in with the plethora of large creature sounds you can already pull from the Monters, MGS, Monster Pack, ICO/Shadow of Colossus, or even the Animal (with a little pitch tweaking) sound packs. The baby dinosuar isn't bad, but I wonder why they didn't just call it squeaky window which is more what it sounds like and is undoubtedly what the main element of the sound is comprised of.

Map unfurl and match light are two of those sounds you won't likely find many uses for that other's won't use for the same purposes, unless you really think outside the box (I can only think of a few myself).

Unfortunately, the rest of the sounds are all "continuous" sounds which make them difficult to use in any level without setting them up to switches. The clock tick would be great for Survivial Challenge levels if set to speed switches in order to get the players heart racing and could really enhance the feeling of anxiety.

Marching... not much to say on this at all other than it sounds more like someone crunching a cookie over and over. Still, I can see a few uses for it but I really hate having to set these continuous sounds up to switches when it's so much easier to loop single sounds on your own and have the option to do so.

Mud pit is decent for BG noise, but would have been better suited to the Monster Pack kit... and I suspect that it might have been just left out by accident. In my opinion... it's just another bubbly type of water sound with a few extra fart bubble sounds thrown in (great for a lab environment when used with bubbly water sounds though).

Quill pen... I'm just baffled as to how this made the cut? Terribly specific scratchy sound and is horribly annoying when played in it's "loop" form. I suppose a small bug scittling across the level could benefit from this, but other than that I see little value in it.

Stamped... just another rolling rock or thunderstorm'ish sound. Certainly useful as BG noise for a large spaceship interior/exterior when used in the low pitch areas and even good for a waterfall when pitched high... but we already have sounds we can use to achieve these effects.

I think Mm needs to start up'ing the sound quality, as well as the quantity. I've worked doing sound design (yes I applied for the job but living in Canada will certainly lower my chances of being a contender where work visa's are concerned), and I personally think these sounds are generally missing the mark. It's really not that difficult to come up with better stuff given the time between pack releases. I'd jump at the chance to come up with some sounds that are more interesting and useful to this game, and would even consider working for free here and just sending them stuff and say "Here, it's free, it's usefull, and it's never been heard before in LBP.

I also think they need to make the sound packs really unique from pack to pack. This one only has two sounds that are at all similar to others we have access to... but that's two to many in my opinion.

I think we need more than thirteen sounds in a pack, and I think we need less continuous sounds and more individual ones we can loop on our own.

Other than that... great pack overall! Except for the stickers.... oooooooh I hate stickers. lolz

To wrap up I'd just like to say that this is only my opinion, both professionally and as a creator. Please don't jump all over me and try to start an argument. Friendly discussions are welcome and I'm perfectly willing to hear why people may have differing opinions... maybe you can change my mind by pointing out something I'm missing when looking at the overall picture.

Cheers!

It's really hard to make sound effects, though. At least, I would think.

You're right, it's not easy for the average person who doesn't do it for a living or think creatively where sound is concerned. I've worked on shows where we had several team members contributing to the sound department and certainly some shine where other's don't. I just figure if you have someone working in that department, they should be really good at what they do as well as very creative.

I agree with you whole heartedly on the lack of musical sounds and the ability to make our own custome tracks. A basic sound editing tool would benefit creators sooooo much.

Thanks Morgana. Being someone who thinks musically and sonically I have lot's of ideas for many of the sounds we have access to. Unfortunately many of them don't lend themselves to the types of levels I am interested in creating. If you're ever stuck for a sound for something, feel free to message me for suggestions.... I'm always here to help.

Know what? I'm actually a bit deceived by this pack. I mean, it pains me how much useless stuff is packed it. I will probably use like 2 of the 4 materials, 20-something of the stickers. The only real worth in there is the background, most sounds and the 2 materials that are actually useful. I kind of feel 4$ was almost a stretch. Media Molecule are REALLY lucky i'm a dedicated creator 'cause otherwise I totally wouldn't have bought it. For some reason the Monster pack was the same type of content but generally better.

I guess it depend on what kind of level you want to make.
Some people will find a great use for a lot of elements, others don't (or not yet)...
For me, there are too many useless stickers (140!!) I would have prefer more decorations or sounds...
and sure i'm not using half of those elements for now, but I still like it.

The problem with those creation packs is that they are maybe to specific,
they stick to much to their theme, so it's hard to use most of the elements in a completely different theme idea/level.

In the same time, there's even a lot of stuff we get in the Story mode, that nobody ever use....

For a next one, MM should think of generic stuff like a "basic LBP" pack, in which we could find for example :
- materials like new kind of cardboard, polystiren, metal...
- some stickers such as new color/gradient stickers, new alphabet letters or new character faces, eyes, mouth...
- sounds like new character voices, new natural sounds...
etc...

Some general elements that can fit in many theme ideas...

well, don't know, but I think that they do a great job anyway,
and it's hard to satisfy everyone, everytime...

LOL , I made a time machine ages ago for someone on here who was going to make a time travelling level. I sent it to them but never heard anything again. It was a pretty accurate model of the actual time machine from the old film of the same name by H.G.Wells.
I'm not sure if i still have it but if I have and anyone wants to use it just let me know.

I liked the Decorations, the new song, and the materials

The background doesn't really do much for me and the new sounds are just ok, I don't really care for the objects as I never use any in any of my levels (except for LED lights)

And more useless stickers that I'll never use....

Overall, I thought the Monster Pack was alot more creative, this pack was kinda average.

The only pure reason I probably bought this pack was because I was making a asian themed level

I acturally thought the stickers were well done this time, since it wasn't all just parts of monsters or faces of random things. It was nice how the building stickers how they were seperated into parts so you can make your own buildings.
The objects were very nice too since it wasn't just scenic but you were able to interacate with it in your level as well. Like the Chinese Bell and the Gargoyle Platform.

The only downside that probably isn't related to the creators but for a player i would of loved to see so more effort in the gallery level. The monster pack gallery level was fun because it had some little mini games in the middle, but the History Pack gallery level was just running -> that way. And maybe 2 platforming puzzles. I was really looking forward for the gallery level for some reason... probably because it's a level made by MM....

I LOVE this pack!
Probably better than the Monster pack, too...
I don't know what you guys are thinking, but the 140 stickers are totally worth it. Especially the architectural ones. The gothic stickers are probably my favorite.
The objects are pretty cool, I really like the large vase and Egyptian head. The gargoyle is great, but I think someone said this already but, it takes up waaay too much thermo space for my liking.
The background is meh. It's pretty much the same as the MGS middle-eastern one, but it still works I guess.
The sounds are alright, but if you want to hear more about those go read Rustbukkit's rant lol. I pretty much feel the same.
The music is one of my favorites in LBP even though it's not interactive. 'Nuff said.
The gallery level was really boring. I expected a bit more from Mm, but this didn't really cut it for me.

wow man, I couldn't agree more! Basically the monster pack is mostly only useful for monster levels, And mm seemed to try to fix that by improving the variety of the different cultures in the history pack, which helped a lot, but still not as good as a pack like the one you're talking about would be. What we need is an all-purpose pack. I personally like cretor pack one a lot nore than the monster or history packs :S

Totally agree , another word for the letters and numbers would be 'CRAP'. I can't believe they still haven't given us some good , normal looking ones. That would be so easy for them and would probably only take a couple of minutes. Come on Mm.

To ApellesJr : If you'd played the level I told you about earlier in the thread you could have seen everything in the pack before buying so wouldn't have wasted any money. That's what I put it up there for.

If you are that bothered about having new letters then there are plenty of places in the community you can find them for free. Also, a lot of really cool fonts are very geometric, so can be constructed out of the object primitives easilly, even if you're not that hot on the artistic side. I've made two fonts myself, and it is so much easier creating custom signage when you have letter objects to sticker up and photograph than just slapping down the MM stickers and trying to align them well.

My biggest gripe with the packs is the quantity of stickers. I just don't want most of them.

@Rustbukkit. I just want a sound pack. Upping the customisation of all sound in the game as well as adding new sounds.

The stickers are brilliant for making buildings, the decorations are great, and the song is awesome! It's just too bad it isn't interactive.

Still, I'd say the pack's worth buying!

You know, I've always said Ada Lovelace would make a natural platformer star. I've always said it. Ever since I was little and first played Super Mario Bros, I've said "mother, dear. Shall they make a game of this nature with miss Ada Lovelace in the starring role? Oh DO say they shall!"

I'm just saying, I was right all along.

I'm just saying.
