Monster's Lair

Monster Rescueverymalty
A monster themed level which is multi-player friendly, help Oggy rescue Oggy Jnr from the clutches of the evil goblin - sounds a bit cheesy, but I wanted it to be a bit of fun! Constructive criticism please! Thanks

I just played this level, it was great! The game play was good, I liked it, and the decoration was good too! But a few areas were a little empty, such as the cave with the orange monsters.

The enemies were nicely made, they look professional. However, the bats in the first cave you go through are only on one layer, so you could just walk around them.

I also felt that the level was too short. But maybe it seemed so short because I was enjoying it so much!

I rated the level 5 stars, hearted it and the level author.

I don't have any F4F levels, but it would be nice if you could look at my "Jazz" level (there's a link to the level thread in my signature) or my other level "The Monster's Mansion". Either or none is fine.

Thanks so much for your feedback Warlord!

You've made my day - hehe! Will check out your levels when I'm next on, and will do something about the bats too!

Thanks again!

MM must have had you in mind when they put out the monster pack!

I love how you played the kitchy monster movie angle to the hilt! I especially liked the burning graves. Great lighting, too! It was moody, yet easy to see. So few creators get that. Making a dark levels with black stickers all over the place doean't really set much of a mood.

I really didn't find much wrong with this, and keep in mind that these are fairly minor points--just things that might help.

- I accedentally managed to lock my-self in the cage. I pulled the switch and when the door came down, I jumped up, bumping the lever back to the closed position. I don't know if this is common, or just me baing a klutz. if it's common, then maybee a check point by the door?

- the music was a great choice for this level, but after a while, it got repetitive. a little variation would be good, even if it's just turning it off and on at certian points.

like I said, there's nothing terribly wrong with this level, and it looks terror-ific (sorry). a couple of the tasks may have been a little cleche, but you pulled them off nicely.

I gave it 5 stars and hearted. A welcome addition to my page.

If you feel inclined, I'd like to get some feed-back from you about my level, "Transcendental Sackitude".

This was a really good level. The monsters looked very good, my favorite was the slime/slug type. I also liked the amount of decorations/stickers/lights you used, and how well placed they were. The scenery itself was good too and was fun to travel through. Then the obstacles fit in very well. They were never too hard but never got boring. Good stuff all around.

The only thing I think you should change is the amount of hits the boss takes. He dies very quickly and that's just when I was solo. Multiple people will have no problem.

:star::star::star::star::star: and a heart. When you can, please try Hectic Hallways.

Hello,

I loved this level so much! I thought it was cute, vibrant and best of all, it was fun! I don't have any major gripes with this level at all. But I do have a few helpful points that might make your level a little more polished.

-Change the music up every now and then. You would be surprised how much a romping track can boost a section of you level.

-In the section with the three layers of blocks that pulse up and down (some block are on fire) it might be a good idea to change the camera angle so that the camera is looking down on the play a bit. If you are on the back layer of these blocks you can't see yourself if they go down and the front layer goes up.

-In the centipede tunnel, you should make the orange bugs that fall through the pits emit from off screen. This won't affect gameplay at all but it will keep players from seeing the bugs pop out of nowhere and then fall.

These are all just little things obviously. I really liked your level. Hearted!

Oh yeah, and I would really appreciate it if you gave my level "The Adventures of the Prince: Chapter 1 The Attack" a go. You can jump to the thread by clicking on my signature.

Thank you!

Yes, Swanbrown is right, your level is kind of a perfect marriage between LBP and the monster pack.
I gave it 5 stars even if saving Oggy Jnr on the suspended bridge has been a pain in the back.

Hey everyone!

Just to let you know I've made a few changes to the level now - they include change of music, moving emitters about, adding a checkpoint and adding a camera zone in the area with the three layered moving obstacle. Hope the level plays better thanks to your comments!

Again, a big thank you for your feedback!

I just played it again, and the new music really works well! I really liked the happy pop music at the end. very appropriate!

I'm not sure if you meant it to be this way, and I'm not really sure I want to mention it (because you might fix it). I managed to get the prize bubbles from the two player section. It was hard, but it was also a lot of fun!:

I jumped onto the spider from the opposite side of the switch, knocking it into the up position as I passed it (much like how I accidentally trapped myself in the cage. who knew that'd come in useful?)
Since the switches weren't glued down, I was able to scootch them close together at the edge of the platform.
Then I walked from one switch to the next, and was able to jump down, and across to the bottom button.
I managed to get 4'th place this time. woohoo!

You got the 2 player prize bubbles??!! Wow - even I haven't managed that! Glad you liked the changes I made though, and great score! As long as it's difficult to get the 2 player prize bubbles, then I think I'll leave it alone, but thanks for telling me nonetheless! I'll have to re-double my efforts to do it myself! 2009-08-13 23:20:00

OK I'm playing this as I type. I like the look a lot. Yes it's cheesey but you've done it so well. Little touches like the Aghh! on the wall made me chuckle. I like the use of visible connectors in plase, it suits the visual and IMO I don't think we see enough of it in community levels, when it is appropriate.

The music is perfect for the visuals as well - it's also one of my favourite tracks.

The creature design was nice, although the big slugs had all those spikes on them and only a single brain at the front - seemed a bit odd.

A few points for that might help with improvement:
Under the spider that talks there if you land on the mushrooms wrong you get squashed and die I tihnk this is only one of two times that I died so I found the level too easy (this may well not be a bad thing in honesty).

Some of tha hazards felt very reminiscent of the MM levels - the three layers of pistons with some on fire for instance. Ditto the "drag me to the exit".

It really bugs me when people take a single layer of action and spread it out over three. If you aren't using the extra layers for gameplay or aesthetics then don't use them, is my rule. But that's a personal thing.

Overall it's a cute level, lighthearted and well put together, if a little short and easy. 4 stars

@Swanbrown, I've got a secret dedicated to me in mrsupercomputer's Mulberry Woods - it makes me feel all giddy like a school girl when I go there.

@swanbrown - you deserve to do the dance! hehe

@rtm223 - thanks for your comments - they're very useful. I did consider putting extra brains on the pink slugs, but mr. littlebot seemed to think they looked strange with >1 brain. *shakes an angry fist at mr. littlebot*

Originally, by killing the goblin a player was able to exit the 'lair', but it seemed a bit easy, and so I put the 'drag me to the exit' part in to tie up the story. It may be a little cliched though - I see your point, and I'll have a think about what else I could do!

I did put the 3 layer pistons obstacle in as the temples levels are amongst my favourite, and I loved the part with that obstacle - I did use them also (even though slightly modified in sackboy's Adventure in Egypt. I'll make sure I steer clear of them in the level I'm working on now though! I suppose you can have too much of a good thing!

Again, thank you for taking the time to play my level, and thanks again for your comments!

with regards to the boss fight, is there any way you could add platforms that go down and collect a key? Just throwing an idea out there.2009-08-14 00:19:00

Firstly, I lol'ed at Oggy, something about him makes me giggle, sort of like when I see a hamster in a wheel...

The tentacles coming out of the purple pool thing at the start looked pretty good, I also noticed how you set the trees on fire, that looked pretty effective, but I was kinda of wierded out why a grave would be on fire? Doesnt matter really, just something I've never seen before. The eyes on the checkpoints were pretty cool too.

I liked the spiders, they were kinda cool. And the work shortly afterwards was pretty epic. I just thought the monsters were pretty cool anyway.

The boss fight was a little easy, just stand there and shoot, but a boss doesn't have to be hard to be cool I suppose, afterall, this level was intended to be fun I suppose.

:star::star::star::star: Very charming level, lots of fun to be had. Good job

I liked all the monsters you put into the level, very cool designs. I also like the way you used the monster pack, all the stickers were put into good use. Yes, the story is a little cheezy but overall I enjoyed the level.2009-08-16 02:01:00

A lovely level with lots of charm and character and above all, really fun to play! I loved all the little touches like the green splat stickers, the ?Arrgh? on the walls and my favourite, the skull lift which lights up different colours.

I thought all your characters/monsters were very well done. I do agree with rtm, however, that the single brain on the large pink slugs is a waste of a great monster design. They need to be harder to beat. If you think more than one brain looks odd, perhaps you could move the brain to a more central position to make you jump more accurately and/or add some gas at the front. I also think the goblin boss is a little on the easy side since there seems to be only a very small risk of getting hit by any of the plasma balls as you stand shooting him. Having said that, he looked cool and my daughter (8) was thrilled that she managed to kill a boss without dying herself once so, as ever, you can?t please all of the people all of the time!

Those two small niggles aside, the gameplay was nicely paced and varied. As well as being fun (so many spooky spiders to to swing on!) it also included some trickier bits.

Overall a very fun and charming level. I am really looking forward to your next one.

The gameplay is varied throughout this level, I think the best part is the monster burping fireballs. That's a nice way of using danger, it doesn't just emitt out of thin air!

The level is too easy and the boss fight is easier than the platforming, I just stood in one spot and killed it.

I also got stuck in the cage and had to try again. Then I dragged the guy into the pit below and had to restart. You should make it impossible to get him down there.

lol you too? I got stuck in the cage.;P

I think there should actually be a bonus for that. like if the cage door shut and a sensor on the cage are boath true, then an emmitor gives out some score bubbles!

you could have a magic mouth that says somthing like "So sorry you have to die. Here are some score bubbles to make you feel better."

@swanbrown - Hey! Exactly the same thing happened to me! My "skillz" are not great so I just assumed it was down to my clumsy jumping (which it probably was anyway) and didn't bother to mention it.

Like your thinking about the booby prize, though! That could be an idea worth exploring. "Hey, you're the first person to manage to die falling off that platform! Have a prize bubble!" or "You died how many times trying to ace Boom Town? Have the acing the level prize, anyway!". Cool....

PS Sorry Littlebot! Still love your level and the other reason I didn't mention getting stuck in my original review was that it really didn't bother me that much!

Great level. It was easy, but funny. I liked the "snails" and the skulls.

But i has an enormeous FPS drop at the boss battle, which made it hard to control my sackboy.

Hello everyone!

Thanks so much for the feedback. I'm currently having a rethink of the boss, perhaps having him moving from side to side and firing out more plasma balls to make him harder to kill.

Love the idea about the prize bubbles if you get stuck in the cage - will sort that out.

Also, am thinking of having an emitter re-emit an Oggy Jnr should he happen to fall into the pit. I'm also changing the slugs to make them harder to kill.

I suppose I underestimated how easy the level was - I was just worried about making it too difficult and losing players early on! Will bear this in mind for future levels, and might tweak a few things here and there to make the level a bit tougher for people!

Again, thanks for the feedback everyone!

"Hey, you're the first person to manage to die falling off that platform! Have a prize bubble!"

I think I'll start incorporating that sort of thing in my levels, too!
I know the perfect place for a consolation bubble emitter. heh, hehe, heh!

Ok guys, so I've made a few changes based on your feedback...

1) Slugs now have 2 brains which means you have to be quite precise when you jump on them to kill them (or at least I hope so)

2) You can't get trapped in the cage anymore, as the switch is placed away from the entrance. (I liked the bubbles idea if you got trapped, but I wasn't sure how to do it so I felt the best way would just be to change the way the cage opened - hope this isn't too much of a disappointment! Also, the level is close to overheating so I had to be careful about the changes I made!)

3) I've made the boss move, so he's slightly harder to kill now. He also throws out larger plasma balls.

4) I've changed the 2 player part so as it's impossible (as far as I can tell) to get the 2 player prize bubbles alone, although you might be able to get around this again Swan - be sure to tell me if you do!!!

5) I've deleted one of the platforms in the cave, so you have to time your jump and grab the platform. It's not hard to do, but I thought it might mix things up a little!

Although the level isn't hardcore, and relatively straight forward for a large amount of players, I hope it's a little more challenging, but not so as to put people off - I was trying to find a happy medium!

Hope you guys like the improvements, but as always, I think every level is a working project, so feedback will be taken on board!

Thanks again to all of you for your comments!

Hey everyone

Just a little update, but I decided to change the title of my level to 'Monster Rescue' rather than 'Monster's lair', as I wasn't happy with the title!
