Lab Assistant 2 ideas

Archive: 12 posts

Sorry if this is i the wrong place i'm still pretty new to these forums. I am working on the sequel to my level Lab assistant and one problem i had with the level was it didn't have that scientific feel which is a problem i am addressing in the sequel.

I was wondering could someone please recommend suitable materials that would look good for the laboratory? I'm currently using the white wood material, but I'm not sure if it all I need.

Edit: Decided to change the name of the thread to keep it all in one place and avoid spamming the board.

I would be a big fan of dissolve. Just sticker it white with a little shading if you need it.

Its what I used on my level "The good, the bad, the sackboy... Episode 3." for the lab area at the start.

Dissolve gives you
- clean lines
- flat surface (no texture)
- stickers well.

I'm going to agree with Wexfordian here. Dissolve works great with stickers, it has no texture that shows through, and the stickers look bright, not faded. Even better is the fact that you are probably already using dissolve somewhere else in the level, so you aren't using any more materials thermometer.2009-08-12 16:23:00

Also, if you're looking for a really "clean tiled" look, there's a really obnoxious looking ceramic tile material (forget what its called) that, when stickered, has no texture but has nice square tiles.

One thing that's kind of cool is when you start taking the "ugly" materials and throw stickers on them - they end up with a completely different look thats really cool. As Wex's example - dissolve looks ugly until stickered. Same with different cardboards or speckled concrete.

An alternative to dissolve is Blue Wood. Has all the + points of dissolve, but isn't grabbable - does my nut in when the walls and floor are grabbable for no reason

Also, blue wood looks ever so slightly less ugly if someone rips all your stickers off

Materials that look good with white material? Are you looking for any certain color scheme? I think the Oak Wood is a nice, blackish color.

i need the material to make it feel like your in a laboratory but without being out of place. and i have no set colour scheme, just a theme.

the steel girder might work well for stainless steel cabinets or something, especially if you go to swanbrown's gradient studio and make a nice blue/grey wash to slap on it. heck, i recommend taking a good gradient sticker and slap it on a big block of material. then, use your material changer tool to cycle through different materials and just see how they look after having a nice blended sticker applied.2009-08-13 15:15:00
