LBP Uses 40Gigs of Blu Ray Mem!

Archive: 21 posts

Although Sony never introduced it as such, many assumed the Network-friendly LittleBigPlanet would be a downloadable game. That notion is impossible, it appears, as a new interview with GI.biz reveals otherwise. Media Molecule's Alex Evans says that "a dual layer is 40GB, but we're filling up the Blu-ray. One of the things on there is we're having a lot of tutorial content - basically there are two paths through the game, the player's route and the creator's route."

The tutorial content will be extensive in LittleBigPlanet. "We're filling the Blu-ray up with is tutorials, and a lot of video stuff showing exactly how it's done, it's narrated by Stephen Fry and so on. It's really useful that thanks to Blu-ray we haven't needed to worry about file size, it's never crossed my mind." However, this doesn't mean the game will be bloated when sharing levels and creations on the web: "The game itself and the levels you produce are relatively compact."

Holy crap that's a lot of stuff. I thought the capacity of Blu-Ray was 50Gb?
Anyway, 40g, 50g it's still a heck of a lot of info.
I guess I always knew this wouldn't be a download.

Yup, I'm looking forward to all those tutorials too I hope they're not mandatory though, because if you're just playing through the game again, and want to try unlock everything, you don't want to have to watch every video again, that'd drive meh nuts.2008-09-10 17:40:00

I wonder how much a level will take up in terms of MBs?

Should be interesting.

I'll bet we'll be surprised. It's probably no bigger than a text file. I'm sure it depends on how many original stickers are used because everything else used will just be read off the disc.2008-09-10 18:00:00

Was wondering that too...
If it does take that much, then that isn't surprising...

It shouldn't be difficult to have the game save the level in a sort of blueprint form... and then compress that. xD

If it's 200-400kb, then that means that downloading a new level should take less time than an HD wallpaper... @_@

Why does it take up 40 gigs?

I mean, sure, there's lots of tutorials, but it seems simple enough of a game to not take up THAT much room.

Surely (waiting for Airplane! joke...), games like LBP shouldn't take up as much room as games like MGS4.

Is it because of all the the items/textures/objects/stickers/decorations?

In other words,

That's my guess as to why they don't allow hdd importing. Imagine if levels are supposed to be a couple hundred kb and you stick pics in there that are bigger than the level in terms of size!! Anyway this is really useful information, thanks! Now we don't have to worry so much about how much space we'll need on our hdd!

****!
A Blue-Ray holds 50gigs and LBP has 40Gig..that's impressive!

I wonder what game will use the whole 50Gigs...:kz:

Maybe Killzone 2 or Fanal Fantasy 13

To Guy With No Eyes: are you upset by it? I mean, if it's taking up this much space, the amount of textures/objects/stickers/etc must be incredible. That's really the only way I can think of.2008-09-11 01:13:00

I think MGS4 used all the space on the Blue-Ray.
The files I think it'll all depend on the pictures that you put there. If you don't have much, it'll be like 200kb like other people said.

That's strange. On my Japanese PS3 it says that "LittleBigPlanet will be available on PLAYSTATION Store in October. So you can download it on the Japanese store apparently.2008-09-11 02:08:00

No, that's wrong. There's no way it's available for download. I think it got lost in translation. They've been pimping out the Playstation Network and LBP (just look at the cover), so they probably meant it would be on the PSN in October.2008-09-11 02:25:00

Well it says this:

LittleBigPlanet will be available on the PLAYSTATION Store in October. Then it goes on talking about LBP. It sounds like it will be a download.

I think it means the DLC, considering the 003 challenge ends September 30 and the likes.2008-09-11 03:08:00

Yeah, as has been said by others, its impossible for this game to be a PSN download. This has been something that's been muddled and confused by a lot of journalists and bloggers. But now knowing this information, it's impossible.2008-09-11 05:23:00

That would be 2 months of my downloads, and more than my PS3 hard drive is, if I deleted everything!2008-09-11 11:57:00
