NHL 2009 Review

Archive: 8 posts

Just picked up my copy of NHL 2009 last night and so far its awesome. I didnt get much time to play it last night but what I did play was pretty sweet. I played 2 quick games against the computer, started the be a pro mode and played 2 games online. I played a lot of NHL 08 so I could notice the differences right away.

The tiny changes they made to the main game are subtle but very effective(lifting the stick button, protecting the puck button, flicking the puck, etc). The computer A.I. is super tough defensively(can be changed to fit your preference in the options). I mean really tough I was only playing on professional and simply giving the puck to a forward and skating into the offensive zone isn't going to cut it anymore, the A.I. will just trap you. I found myself making quick passes through the neutral zone or just dumping and chasing just to get anything going offensively.

Listen to the commentary as they actually give you hints if your falling into the same trap. The commentary in this game is one of the few that I find never gets old since they follow the flow of the game so well. the soundtrack is meh lol.

6 on 6 online games are hectic and intense but well played at the same time. In the 2 games I played people learned quickly to play their position instead of following the puck. The trash talking potential with that mode alone is through the roof. Havn't checked out the EASHL(Ea Sports hockey league) as I have yet to join a team but its essentialy 6 on 6 user controlled teams playing in a full league. Cant tell you how customisable it is but just the concept alone sounds a heck of a lot of fun.

The graphics are relatively unchanged from last year which isnt a bad thing as I dont see how it can get much better this generation. The framerate tends to lag a little bit though which is kinda dissapointing and some of the faces are brutal and look nothing like the players.

Never been a fan of Be a Pro modes as it just gets too repetetive for me but from what I played its actually really fun and they grade you on offensive/defensive position and even have little arrows telling you where to be on the ice while playing. Plus theres tons of customisable options for the look of your player. If your into that sort of thing its pretty cool.

All in all not only is this an amazing representation of hockey its just a great sports game in general. The online options are addicting( it took everything I had to go to sleep for work this morning), you can change the settings to make the gameplay as realistic or unrealistic as you want, and theres tons of single player options to keep you busy. You guys should pick it up, this is going to be my main game until LBP comes out.

Gameplay 9/10
Replay value 10/10
Graphics 8/10
Sound 9/10
Overall 9/10

Do you get Madden? Does UK have hockey? Wow I never thought that other countries may not have the exact same sports, I just thought hockey was a international sport since it is a olympic sport.

I dont know how popular it is in the UK but I know its hugely popular in the colder regions of Europe. They even have cover athletes for each region like Finland, Czech Republic, Russia, Sweden, and Switzerland.

Hardly anyone plays ice-hockey here. Also, American Football isn't big either.
