Boss Help

Archive: 18 posts

Ok, I know this is incredibly simple, but I've never used a brain on a complex boss before, and I was wondering if someone could run over the basics for me so I do it right. I guess to compare it to something, MrSupercomputer's Basalisk Bog Boss would be appropriate as far as the scale of the monster, and the way the fight is set up. What type of brain do I use and what to I set it to?2009-08-11 18:04:00

Its a protected brain if you need to get a switch pressed or w/e.
If you need to hit all the brains, like the collector boss then unprotected.

1. Killing all the brains on the boss will destroy everything it's connected to, so make sure the boss is not connected to the main part of your level through a piston, rod, winch....

2. To kill a brain through a switch, set the brain to vulnerable AND set the switch to 1-shot.

Not necessary, unless I missed something....

You didn't miss anything, but a lot of people make this misconception. Vulernability does not affect the ability of a one-shot switch to destroy a brain. Vulernability affects the creature's suceptibility to hazards.

Thanks guys! That's pretty much exactly was I was looking for.

The Hoola Man Jenkins' Cabin Trilogy is nearing completion, and I'm really proud of it. I just have to make the Boss as satisfying and unique as the rest of the level.

actually if you set it to vulnerable and it hits a danger it will automatically die..2009-08-12 05:47:00

Or you can learn them the old fashioned way.

Trial and error.

That's how I manage to understand LBP Level creation :|. Until recently I joined this forum and learned more cool stuff.

Naw.... it's just me trying to think it through while not in front of create mode. As I remember, there's a "protected" brain and an "unprotected" brain AND separately a "vulnerable"... without sitting in front of LBP it's hard for me to remember exactly what they do.

No worries, it happens to the best of us.

Well that's normally the way I've done everything. (and to be honest, as a result, I probably do some things in a totally unnecessarily complicated way)
But in this case, I'm so tired of creating this level, and this boss scene and fight are so complicated, my brain is about to explode. It's sad to admit this, but I'm honestly not having fun making this level any more. I'm doing it purely to finish and be satisfied with a masterpiece.

(And probably retire my creating for good.)

I've heard people say this before, and even though they truly mean it, they suddenly get inspiration out of thin air and get to work creating their next masterpiece. My advice would be to take a break from creating, and then jump back in and don't try so hard, let it come naturally.

I've gotta agree with BSprague here. I went through that. I just didn't care enough to do it. I don't think it's worth saying "I'm definately giving up forever" or saying "I'm going to keep creating because I should", just roll with your moods and never force it.2009-08-13 14:47:00

I've felt this way at the end of each level I've made. However, once it all comes together, you'll start to get excited again and possibly have more ideas that you can't resist building!

Yeah - By the time I finish a level of any worth, I've had it with LBP and need a break. I tried for a while to create when I was in this post-level funk (cuz, y'know... it's become my only real hobby), but I had serious creator's block. Then I just took a nice long break, played other's levels once in a while, and suddenly, a rush of new ideas came over me.

But I (we) know exactly where you're at right now. I'm not sure it was ever not fun for me, but it has definitely leaned more toward work at a few points.

BTW - Can't wait to see your finished product!!

Thanks everyone. (And yeah, "work" would describe building my boss scene perfectly.) But I've finished that now, and I'm pretty satisfied with the result. I'm going to put the release date on my trilogy as August 26th.* So look forward to that moment.

*Date is subject to change due to unforeseen complications such as procrastination and/or allergic reaction.
