Moderation: how does it work?

Archive: 20 posts

How does the moderation of levels work?
I got this idea when I read about mistervista's latest level being moderated.
Apart from the poo, I can't really understand what it has to be moderated.
In a thread I read that there are words that lead directly to the level being moderated.
And I found necessary any kind of moderation due to racism/politics/religion.

But some days ago, I found by chance a level in Italian called SilvioBerlusconi Land, filled with politic stuff, sexual references, 4 letter words and racism.
I reported the level (actually you can report only a part of it for only a reason, so I take the picture where a sackboy silhouette had a speech mouth vertically between the legs, since it was understandable for everyone even if not Italian), but the level, yesterday was still there.

So is there automoderation?
Is there someone that really checks the stuff and moderate the levels?
Is there envious people that files moderation request just of pure stupidity?

How does it work?
Mistervista's level being moderated, since the kindness of mistervista, and having played the level, really got me nervous.

How does the moderation of levels work?

In short, it doesn't.

It has claimed the lives of many good levels, especially back in the olden days when a level only needed a few good griefs before the level was deleted, which was the tragic case of World of Colour.

Yes, mine was only a sarcastic question.

Even because I would really like to know how MM (? are they the ones to check???) would understand how to moderate a level with blasphemies in Finnish...

Because if someone doesn't check the requests and doesn't punish false filings, all the hard work on the game can be destroyed by bunch of people like...say...russelmuscles...

Yes it's a total mystery.

I sent a message to Spaff_Molecule asking for some sort of explanation but I haven't had a reply yet !!

They really should tell you why it's been moderated so you can change whatever the problem is ( if there even is one ) and republish. They should also give you notice so that you can copy the level back to your moon before they delete it. I was just very lucky that I had recently done so. Otherwise I would have been gutted.

I also asked him why other levels such as the Jigsaw one by defmunky which has lots of gory death scenes in and one on the cool pages recently called 'Sheep Shagger' !!! were deemed perfectly ok when my fun innocent level was not.

Of course I don't expect a reply as I don't suppose they actually have an explanation to give.

EDIT : BTW When Ard was with me the other day I asked him to address this issue in the live sackcast but alas he didn't. I also asked about it 2 or 3 times during the live broadcast but again failed to get any response. I would have thought that would be a perfect time for the sackcast team to put the question to Mm for us !!

Yes, it's kinda going back to November, people still doesn't know the reasons because they get moderated.
This should have quite some visibility like in a podcast, or someone should talk with Gevurah22 or someone that it's in contact with MM.

PS. Isn't Spaff a bot?

I think your levels can be modarated not only because of its content, they can be moderated if the author posts offensive messages in other levels.
I know that because I've good griefed plenty of offensive messages in my levels, and in some cases, their levels have been moderated.

Media Molecule explained how they proceed a long time ago.

When they hit a certain number (secret) of good griefs about a level, it's automatically taken down for moderator. It places itself in a queue and then someone at the Media Molecule opens the level and check what's up.
When your level is moderated, they are supposed to send you an Email telling you why. If your doesn't need any modification, they are supposed to free it up in the next 48 hours.

When you have a level moderated, you can always republish it...

But then agian the amount of moderation would be diffrent depending on which country the creator comes from and what audiance he/she made the level for right?

If let's say, a creator said on his level detail that it includes sexual references and is only allowed for 18 years and up, wouldn't that level be allowed? I mean come on! It's the same as a 12 year old going on a porn website and clicking enter at the opening message.

Also comes in the question, let's say for example someone makes a Japanese themed level, but because it was so steriotypical that it offended many Japanese players, but because they don't really touch on religon, sexual content or faul langauge, it's allowd?

When your level reaches a certain threshold of "Good Griefs", as Ranger said, it's moderated. Sony moderators, such as the ones on the official PS forums, have the ability to moderate levels as well as far as I know.2009-08-11 13:08:00

No it's not. Porn sites require a host that allows pornographic content. At the end of the day, as a creator, you are using a service that involves placing data onto a privately owned server. Sony / MM can enforce whatever policy they choose. The owners of the server don't want that content there and it's in violation of the user agreement.

Wow... I'm pretty shocked to hear it works that way!
This just screams to be abused!!

Spaff is veeeeeeery busy nowadays.

Sent him an email about Gadder's Trial about 3 weeks ago and just got a reply now.

Also sorry we missed your question, we'll make sure to cover it next show.

On topic, banning is a tricky little thing but I think that they should keep the system where a number of good griefs auto shuts a level but then they also whitelist particularly popular levels which would be the most likely targets.

They need to get their act together on this. In most cases where it is appropriate skimming the comments, dumping the level into create mode and flying around a bit will uncover anything nasty, quickly. And if there was an immediate, unconditional, 1 week ban from PSN for 2 unsubstantiated good griefs (warning after 1) then that'd slow it down a lot, especially when it became common knowledge that they were harsh on abuse of the system.

Put in the effort early and make it clear you are doing so. Yes there would be a lot to get through now because they have let it get out of hand, but it would quickly drop off.

Thanks Shermzor, I have to say I don't agree with keeping that system because it just doesn't work and is open to too much abuse. Take my level for instance. Can you tell me what in there is worthy of good griefing.

If several people just take a dislike to you for whatever reason that means they can simply good grief your level and get their friends to do the same with no good reason at all and your level still gets moderated. That is just ridiculous !!

Too much poo will kill you mistervista... just joking
Your level had nothing to deserve a moderation.
Still they have even pick up one of your levels, so they should know about your quality and reliability.

Automatic stuff is not the way to make things work.

It obviously work like this because it's a small team and they probably don't have time or budget to moderate such thing so they designed LBP as a self-moderating software.

Personally I don't really see a problem. Be it a guy from Media Molecule flagging my level full of penises or be it the guy next door, it doesn't really change anything.

Heck, even YouTube is self-moderated style.

That's why they should whitelist authors so it takes even more good griefs to get an auto lock/ make them immune.
