Plasma Maiden (Touhou-style) [v1.xx ] Mini-Game!!MGO_Count
This level is based on the free game called "Touhou". Objective of this game is to dodge the plasmas, sounds easy right?, Youtube "Touhou", and you'll eat your words!.
all

This is the 2nd ever level I made on LBP. (1st was "The Ruins"), Harsh Criticism is fine. So I can make my next 18 levels 10x better!

This level took me around 3 all-nighter nights to finish. Finishing up with a total of 200 wires, 80+ switches, 6+ contraptions. Making my Temperature Reach more than 80%.. Anyways. Enjoy!.

If level gets more notice, will be adding a hard mode!!

Wow, that was awesome!!

When you said you spent three nights working on the level (which to be honest isn't really that long, most of my levels have taken me close to three MONTHS to finish, and I'm never really that happy with them when I finish) I wasn't expecting there to be as much awesome detail and customization in the level's opening and closing. The options and music settings were very nicely done, and I look forward to playing around with them to see what results I can set up.

The design of the gameplay area was very cool looking. I'm not that fond of the sterile, VR-style minigame designs, and it was a relief to have a cool wooden play area with trees and shrubs and clouds and all that cool stuff. Unlike other people around these parts, I really don't have anything against creators using pre-made stuff in their levels (I use them all the time in mine!!) and I was really excited to see the Sensei from the islands again (she is an awesome character!).

Overall the design was excellent, I particularly liked the way you displayed the scoreboard both at the start and at the end. I can't really give you much feedback on the actual gameplay as I haven't played it enough, but I've hearted it to come back to later and I look forward to trying for a higher score! Awesome job, :star::star::star::star::star:

I really enjoy a well designed and addictive mini-game, and that's what you made. Just like the above poster, after reading that it only took 3 days, I was skeptical, but after playing it, I can confidently say that this level rocks. The options section you made was a great addition, especially the lighting choices. Then the actual gameplay itself was very nicely done. I was able to get 3rd place, but I don't think I'll be beating your score anytime soon.

:star::star::star::star::star: and a heart. When you have the time, try Hectic Hallways.

Thnx, Your words inspired me to make more mini-games!
I will try all of your levels after I'm done playing MGO.

Please do make more mini-games, you have a great talent for it!!

In the meantime, I've played your Touhou level a few more times, and I'm currently #4! I also noticed a few things that could be fixed to make this an even more amazing level:

-the door that lets you into the gameplay area is on a piston that is not set to "stiff", making it wobble kinda strangely as it opens

- right under that door is a little bit of something stuck to the ground, looks a bit odd

Obviously these are only tiny minor things that don't affect the quality of the level much at all, but I trust you that many other nitpicky people like myself will notice! Whether or not you care is another question

Also, if you ever plan on returning to this level and making more major changes, I would suggest building a way for the checkpoint to be moved over the scoreboard after the final life is lost, or to maybe block the entrance to the gameplay area so that the player can't return and lose their last life. You would require a simple counting mechanism which uses a proximity switch to count the number of times the player has respawned, which can be a bit tricky.

One other thing is the way that the points are emitted during the game, it's a personal preference but I'd set them to have a limited life so that players don't cheat by waiting for lots of points and collecting them to get a combo. That might be your conscious decision though, so fair enough. The only unfair part is that when you re-enter after being killed, you get heaps of points because they've all collected at the bottom.

Yeah, that's what I was trying to remember. Thnx for reminding me about that.

- right under that door is a little bit of something stuck to the ground, looks a bit odd

I put it there so people can't push out the spawning block. Me and my brother tested everything in the level. He used his Glitch seeking techniques to find some odd spots (He used to work as Electronic Arts QA tester).

Hmm odd, did the last block didnt fall down when you only had 1 life left?. If the checkpoint is red, it should block the pathway to go down again.

Actually I did think of that, But the problem for the people who wants to do that is that the emitter gets block if there's a score bubble on top of it. So the max they can get from the bubbles coming back is the same as when your playing the game legitimately. Even if they wait for it, once they fall down, it wont be all stacked up. It will just be a single fold line.

I want to edit my stage some more, but only if I have the chance. Because sometimes my grab switches breaks and it activates EVERYTHING. So I had to pause everything and delete the falling bombs/Etc. And rewire them. And I have to double check everything, so it's really hard sometimes.

But I am working on another one, I'll take my time to it, and you guys are surely gonna be surprised!
----------

I still need to fix 1 more things though.
1. Very very low chance you'll die if you fall through the spawner.

I'll fix it once I get the balls to rewire the grab tools again.

And working on Hard mode. But I might delay it for awhile because I'm working on something big.

--------------
There's also one secret spot on my level that only people who wants to cheat can occur. Lol, I want to keep it a surprise so just look for it on your own x)

-------------
Anyways, This is Touhou.
Everything in the beginning is fast forward. (Except the boss/mini boss battles)

I made it to 4th place :-). I wish the art style was a bit more detailed... maybe stickers?. Ummm I didn't like that you used sensai from the islands story level.. but just my opinion.
wished the plasma came in better formations.

now for what I liked.
I liked it was difficult but easy to learn, the 3 lives was cool. snake hinding in the tree was funny XD

The patterns took me forever to make it a bit more touhou style for avoiding.

Everything can be dodged and I can guarantee you that.

And like I said again, it's based on Touhou. And the Sensei is the closest character you can get.

---------
Lol the Snake thing is a little extra. There's a secret spot on the level too. lol

Also I tried your level. Really cool must've took you forever to make the boss.

This is a fun and addicting level that I think you've done a great job on. There are a few elements in a survival challenge style game that you've done well.

-The player will die a lot and if the level is fun they will be replaying a lot. You let the player get back into the actual challenge very quickly which is a tremendous relief for those wanting to play over and over again.

-The game concept is simple enough to easily understand yet difficult enough that it takes skill to get a high score.

I like all of the little details that are in this game that make it look like a much more serious level that many other survival challenges I have seen. The game play options is very nice though more gimmicky in my opinion.

A player may set these values the first time, maybe the second, but when playing the level over and over again I don't think anyone will give this section a second glance. (Which is why your default music and lighting are important to have set to good choices.)

There are other details that are well done such as the piece of wood that lets the current score be seen easier. A very creative touch.

The prizes that you give out are good touch as well. I don't really understand what you track to measure when a player has earned the next prize. I can see a counter but I never had the free time to see what triggered it.

Sometimes I played a long stretch and never got a prize and other shorter times when I had one unlocked. (And my final run of the night when I managed to get all of the prizes.)

I agree with feedback from CheeseMcFly in regards to the wobbly door and the bit of material on the floor but it does work out as it currently is.

I also thought it was a bit odd that when the checkpoint is activated and pulled out that a tree looks like it falls down into that spot. It looked like you should move the tree so that it is upright as it was an oversight on your part. As I played I started thinking that maybe you do it on purpose so that the player is not able to planeshift through the hole and avoid the plasma but I never tested this theory out.

Either way I think that you've decorated this level very well, you've created an addicting gameplay that is accessible for a quick game or a long string of games.

Good work on this.

Maybe you should try and find out and go inside that hole. I really thought of the whole thing from top to bottom.

If you read the words during entrance. This is what it says or similar to this.

"The longer you survive your 1st life, the higher the chances you win price. Once you die, you can't win prices anymore". "

And the waaay longer you survive the 1st life, the more score bubbles you get at the end!

The light seems to levitate after death making the prize bar seem its moving again. Due to some glitch.

But thnx for your feedback!. Will test out your levels once I get back. (Got a new mini-game too!!)

This thread caught my attention instantly since I am a fan of shmups. Also, where can TouHou legally be found for free? As far as I know they all cost, but you say it's a free game.

Anyways, I am going to try this sometime tonight. If you are interested in danmaku style levels, just look up the PSN name Bridget_ and you can find Danmaku Rave.

He has made many danmaku style bosses in LBP, though that one is a stand alone boss. A couple of his bosses other than Rave have very unique patterns.

Anyways, I will definitly be trying your level soon.

Thanks, will do. And Touhou will always be free, because the maker made a statement that he doesen't want any money from his hobby. But I'm not sure, maybe he changed his mind.

I'll look for the link again once I go to my brothers computer.

Have fun. :kz:

So, after s3xNstilettos told me about this, I of course had to go and try it, being the huge shmup fan that I am.

This is the first time that I've found a level like this that ISNT made by me.

A bit on the easy side compared to what Im used to.... as it is, I went and took the 2nd place score without too much trouble, haha.... but all in all, this is pretty well done. I like the way this emphasizes scoring the way it does. None of the bosses I've made really do that, they tend to be entirely about "try not to die", sort of thing, haha. The patterns are a bit on the simple side, as that sorta thing goes, but they all mesh well together, and never create any "impossible walls" as can happen in some badly-designed shmups. Also, no moments of "you need to have memorized this in order to not die", which is another plus.

Not to mention, nice looking level, lol. Mine are all kinda ugly, just crazed geometrical machines out to obliterate things. I dont do art, haha.

As it is, I hope you dont mind, but I went and took a video of the level in action here. When I saw it, I just had to do it, lol. To me, something like this deserves a bit more recognition than it will likely get. And getting a level like this out there isnt so easy. I made a point of explaining what the level is, and mentioning your PSN account name, in the description for the video.

I think the video does a pretty good job of showing it off, but have a look for yourself. If ya dont like it, and would rather I take it down, just say the word. Also, I got the 2nd place score while recording this, actually, haha.

And the video quality should improve a bit once Youtube finishes it's stupid "processing" that it's currently doing, being that this was JUST uploaded.

YouTube - Not my level! "Plasma Maiden"

There ya go! Recorded on a digital camera, that was, haha.

Again, I like the way the scoring works here. I thought that was pretty neat.

Also, I see that Stillettos has gone and mentioned my Danmaku Rave level, which I guess I shoulda expected that she would, haha. If you'd care to see that, and the other danmaku bosses, just look through my channel there. It mostly consists of LBP things. Being that LBP is awesome, and all, haha....

All in all, good work! 5 stars and hearted.

Certainly let us know if you should do another like this!

If you want to play the Nightmare Redux final boss, you better hope he releases it as a stand alone boss later. He mentioned doing this in our Expert Platformists group here since hardly no one will ever see that boss because it would imply getting through the Nightmare Redux level first once he releases it, which took a lot out of me to make it through the level on all of the testplaying I've been doing and multiple runs. Sorry, I know I just assumed you wouldn't make it to the final boss even though you probably can, but it is an extreme platformer that would take an expert an average of 3 hours to beat, while most will just give up or find it impossible. This is why I predict only 3 or 4 people, including Bridget and myself, will make the scoreboard for it.

But if you want to see more danmaku patterns, you have to get to the end of a couple of his levels, plus the bosses he has in some of the Community Boss Rushes.

As for Tou Hou and other shmups, there are many patterns from those games that CAN be done in LBP, but not all. It just takes a lot of work with the emitters and other techniques to pull off.

The camera is a....... uhhh....... says on it "Fujifilm FinePix S1000"

Blasted expensive thing, I think I got it for about 300.

Something to note though, making videos like this with a digital cam only works with hi-def TVs. It doesnt work with standard-def, as it wont come out right at all, you'll get that horrible flickering wave the whole time no matter what you do.

And I looked at that link, I see you're into fighting games, lol. As am I, haha. Huge Guilty Gear fan , if you cant already tell. Not to mention BlazBlue (Carl and Nu being my favorites in that one). I play those a bit too much.

As for the Nightmare boss, yeah, patterns like those are doable, certainly.... that one used exactly 3 emitters and no real logic stuff (as opposed to every other boss I've made, which tend to need a good bit of logic switches). I've yet to think up a pattern in this and NOT be able to get the game to do it.

If you wanna see another interesting one, look at the video I put up for the first boss rush. The boss I'd made for that one, I think I called it "Tronadara", uses these purple bullets that follow the walls and floor after being fired. Not to mention this big charged blast.

Anyway though, yeah, like s3xNstilettos said, the boss in the NR video with the crazy shots is at the end of a level I've been making (which is ALMOST complete, just needs a little more testing), and what she said is true, the level is made to be so difficult that few will ever reach that boss, let alone kill it (even with infinite lives). It's also the third boss in the stage, there being two others. The first of the three also does something odd with the bullets.

I might consider putting a couple of these bosses into a stage of their own, so people can try them out without having to go through the stages associated with them, what with the general insane level of difficulty that tends to go along with everything I make.

Anyway though, happy to have made the video for ya Feel free to ask if you've other levels you'd like videos done of

And lemme know what you think of Danmaku Rave if you should get a chance to try that one out, of my own stuff.

Hi, MGO_count

I played it and totally loved it, dude! I never thought it would be so addicted.
It's simple but addictive. the looks is also nice. when the plasma balls are all over the place was really awesome (and, yeah, I lost one life, ****nn)

If you can put your own custom creature instead of that Japanese sensie, it'd be totally awesome!

overall, I think it's a must play. So :star::star::star::star::star: and a Heart

good job!

I finally got around to playing Plasma Maiden just now and I loved it. It is a very addictive level with good visuals. I also love the options section with time of day, weather, and music. I made 4th on scoreboard after actually being able to do a full play instead of the weird thing below that happened.

I did notice one problem though. The first time I tried to play it and died, instead of taking me to checkpoint above boss, it took me to entrance gate checkpoint instead and I couldn't get back into level. I'm not sure what caused this. All I know is I went to options section and set music to the one just left of lift, then set time of day to night. After this I went to play, died, and sent to entrance checkpoint and had to restart.

Also, I feel you should have made a character from TouHou for the boss instead of using sensai. Just find something from TouHou and try mocking it to keep that TouHou and anime feel. You can still do this and update the level with new character.

Despite the minor problems, though not sure what to think of first complaint, I gave it . . .
:star::star::star::star::star: and a heart

I don't have any of my many levels published yet, lol.
So you can't go and play all of my levels.

Anyways, I'm probably going to go and nab the high score here in a few, maybe. It's just such a fun game. ^_^

Oh, you know what, I'd had that wierd checkpoint thing happen to me as well.

Died, came back out at the entrance instead of the other point.

Only happened once though, but still.

Yeah this was my toughest glitch on my level. But it's usually the cause of activating the level too quick. I do mean like before you start the plasma there's this grab button to start the game. You probably grabbed it too far and quick, so it didn't register my moving checkpoint.

And that's pretty much the only thing that's odd about my level.

I also LOL when I see people fall on the jail. I put it there for a reason xP.

But thanks for the play s3x. I'll plays your levels once I login LBP xD.
