Can you judge a players age from their creations?

Archive: 18 posts

Thought this might an interesting one.

While this community is pretty close knit so it may be difficult to be objective and not take into account your interactions with each other....do you think it's possible to judge a players age by their creations alone? Obviously to reach a conclusion you're going to have to generalised and you could end up being way out...but what do you think? Willing to give us any examples?

I don't think you can with a creative medium such as this. I've seen levels by some younger creators that are fantastic and ooze creative juices. Conversely, I've seen attempts by older creators who simply don't have the same amount of talent or haven't taken the time to really flesh out their creations and come up short.

No examples to give (and I certainly won't drop names here), but I have been surprised to find out quite a few members ages on here.

No I can't, basically because of what rustbukkit said.

You mite be able to get an idea for an age, however, i don't think that it would be very accruate based solely on their creations, for example, take my levels i highly doubt that anyone can guess my age, based on those.

It's seems as though its assumed that older players make better levels however that may not be true, although it seems interesting to try and guess a creators age from their creations.

For the most part you`ll be able to get an idea. Certainly won`t always be the case however. Also, I think it`s more a case of being able to separate adults from kids than determining actual ages.

'No way was this level made by a 24 year old!'
'Yeah he`s 26.'
'I knew it!'

Personally I agree, there are obviously ranges that you can guess at, without trying to be condescending I'm sure that highly logic orientated levels (the calculator etc) aren't going to be creating by someone of a young age. That's not to say that someone under 16 couldn't do it however, as I said in the first comment, in order to even attempt to guess someone's age based on their creation generalisations have to be made.

With what you can do being so varied in the game, I agree that it is difficult and nigh on impossible to guess.

I'm trying to think of an example but I really can't. All the ones I think of have been tinted with my interaction with them on a forum.

I think it's very possible. but the thing is, DON'T FACTOR QUALITY. because that has less to do with age than you might think.

If a level has alot of obscure beetles references, or some similar thing I can assume this is an older player, same with teck references.

If they've made a Micheal jackson tribute level, and it only features the odd Anime Micheal, It's probably a younger creator. lol

Language usage and abbreviations: Many older creators will shy away from using "lolz" and such kitchy text in their prompts. On the other hand, If you notice correct usage of military acronyms and phonetic alphabet, you can guess that this is someone whose seen service, their kid, or someone who watches way too many War movies.

etc, etc.

There are SO many variables, it's hard to tell age.... it depends on the subject matter of the level combined with the talents of the creator more than age itself.

Personally, I've been dealing with people from so many age groups with different levels of talent I would have a REALLY hard time telling. (I think I would have felt differently if I had been asked 6 months ago).

Interesting question.. Some of them you just know they were done by someone 8 - 10 years old, but could be someone older with not much skill nor wish to worry about it. The rest... ?? Kinda hard to tell actually as there are some amazing creators at a huge age range out there.

What is funny that you ask is I got a PSN message the other day from someone saying and asking..

"Wow.. that level is amazing!! How old are you?"

I replied. "Hi. I am 5. Is it good?"

...nah.. not really. I am really much older, but glad you liked it."

Never got a response back though!!

The age of a creator really is an intriguing questions, but it's only that is rarely asked too.2009-08-09 20:59:00

My answer would have to be sometimes. I've seen absolutely amazing levels made by kids in their early teens or sometimes even younger. For that reason I can't say with 100% accuracy the age range of the creator of a great level. It is, however, a lot easier to guess the age range of some of the really bad levels. Immature levels, gross levels, blatantly offensive levels, etc are all usually made by young kids. For example, that "diarrhea level" that was on the Cool Pages a while back was most likely made by someone aged 7-14. 2009-08-09 21:04:00

I don't think it is possible to judge someone's age by their creation. As mentioned before certain things can give you a hint as to their age, but true talent is another thing. True talent is not something determined by age. There are some truly talented creators and judging their work, on their creation alone, it is difficult to tell their age.2009-08-09 22:30:00

I think everyone pretty much has the same opinion. It is possible, but more in terms of a range than a specific age, and it takes more than just the level itself to work it out.

It's not really something we can test either because we all interact with each other on the forum, that's clearly going to influence our guesses...

Anyone fancy taking a pop at mine? See if our criteria for judging is actually useful...

Creations don't always judge age, and skill or talent isn't really defined by someones age.

I'm guessing that your 17 or so...and I don't mean any offense, your levels are great, I'm just taking a guess. I'm wrong, am I not?

It's probably the same as drawing a picutre. I know alot of kids that are younger than me that can draw masterpieces! where as mine looks like a doodle a 5 year old made on the wall.

But you can probably judge an age of a person by the comments they post.
I consider someone writing somthing like "You're level suckz" not mature, where as I consider someone mature when they write "Your level is bad because....."
