New to LBP, new to LBPC

Archive: 34 posts

Hi!

So a couple of days ago, I picked up LittleBigPlanet for what seemed like next to nothing. I'd heard about the game, read the reviews, but never gave it too much of a thought. How simply stupid of me, I was about to find out. After popping in the disc, I was sold at the opening video. Stephen Fry's voice over is perfect and sets the tone from the get-go. The opening level, the simply brilliant way in wich MM made the opening credits, had me sit with an expression that most resembled the effects of having a stroke. (It took me a few minutes to realize this. Then I just continued smiling, like a nun with concussion.)

How, how, how on earth could I have missed out on this fantastic game?

And then the fantastic world of the level editor opened up for me. Of course, I'd seen some of the stuff that others have made (that calculator comes to mind), but I never imagined how easy and intuitive it would be.

So, here I am, having stumbled onto LBPC. I've not even finished the story levels, and I can waste away hours in the editor, just making rubbish, then starting all over again.

If anyone could point me out to some easy to follow tutorials that gradually teaches building levels, adding more complexity as you go, that'd be much appreciated. (I'll try a search for myself to see what I can find.) I've learned a few things by trial and error, but it'd be a time saver to find some 'building your first level 101' kind of... stuff. (Yeah, that sentence ran away from me.)

And last, a few quick words about me: Male. 27. From Norway. Games a lot. Mostly CoD/PES/FIFA. Trying to make it as a writer. Drinks inhuman amounts of coffee. Smokes (yes, a bad habit, I know.)

I dunno, anything you want to add, show me, or ask, just let me know and I'll get back to you.

Seems you have been infected with the LBP virus as well!! Welcome to the party!!
Nurse should be coming in an hour to give us our daily pills and shots.

If you need some help getting all the items in Story mode, go to the Happy Gadders section (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=43).

The tutorials section (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=75) has some useful information on various subjects but up until this point we don't really have a "how to get started" yet.

I welcome you to the forums, slutzin!!
Hope you have a good time over here.

Cheers! By the way, what's a happy gadder? I've seen the term on other LBP sites (and if I remember correctly, there was a rare hat/crown associated with it?).2009-08-06 12:48:00

Hi and Welcome to the best forum on the LittleBigPlanet.

I'm so envious you got the game cheap. I paid ?40 for it on launch day. Having said that I have had the pleasure of playing the game ( or rather making stuff in create mode ) almost every day since so I guess that's fair. If we could rewind time I'd do the same again anyway.

You're in for a great time and another benefit you have is that you get to use all the new stuff , tools etc. that we had to wait months for. You couldn't have joined at a better time because there's an awesome History pack coming out next thursday which is an essential purchase imo.

If you haven't bought any DLC yet I would advise the following in order of most importance as far as I'm concerned :

(1) FREE Creator Pack 1
(2) MGS Level Pack
(3) Monster Pack
(4) History Pack ( Due out 13th August )

Have Fun and let us know when you've finished your first level.

Oh and whatever you do avoid the H4H brigade like the plague. They are a blight on LBP and aren't knowingly allowed on here.

Thanks, everyone! I'm currently sitting at the airport, waiting for the flight to take me back to my hometown (and my grandfather's funeral), so reading your replies helps kill some time.

I've had a look at some levels in LBP, and some of them blew my mind. (The Bunker, and that sheep-ish-themed level springs to mind.) I'm looking forward to browse the level showcase and hopefully get some ideas of my own.

I just wanted to clarify something. I paid about ?15 for the game, but after having played it extensively for the last couple of days, seeing with my own eyes the briliant gameplay and the infinite possibilites, those ?15 seems like nothing. And yes, had I known at launch how brilliant LBP is, I'd gladly shell out ?50 for it ? it's definetly worth it.

Yes, I do have the benefit of having most of the stuff available right away, but the OCD collector in me is screaming in agony at the thought of those time-limited items I've missed. I've picked up the free packs and the MGS pack to help me ease the pain, and I will buy the rest of the available packs when money allows it.

As I said, I'm going for my grandfather's funeral, so I won't be home until wednesday. But be assured, the first thing I'll do is pop into the editor and start creating. I'm sure until then I've gathered a lot of concepts on my own, as well as picking up a lot of ideas from LBPC. I'll be sure to let you know when I've published a level.

(Note: I have already published a test level, as well as a level aimed at getting the Party Person trophy. Yes. Yes, I am a bit ashamed of admitting this. But, at least I've not succumbed to the horrible H4H brigade. I saw the term early on, figured what it was all about, and hated every single one that left "H4H" in the comments. I figure, once I get my skills down and are able to produce some quality levels, the hearts will come by themselves, so I don't need to go spamming other levels' comments to get hearts.)

(Now, F4F ? however ? is a term I might be getting to use a lot in the future.)

Welcome! Sorry to hear of your Grandfather's passing. Glad to have you here though. Sounds like you caught the LBP bug. Best advice if you want to make levels is complete all the in game tutorials, then check out the help and tutorial section here on the site. It will save tons of frustration and broken projects down the road.

If your looking for some of the most fun, innovative and beautiful levels LBPC members have made, check out the Spotlight threads. We feature the best levels we find every two weeks in that thread. Guaranteed to entertain or amaze... sometimes both!

Hope you have fun!

Greetings and welcome!

Glad ya made it!

First off in reading the thread a bit, I am so sorry to hear the news of your grandfather. Seems like a terrible way to say hello to you, but indeed I am so sorry and have a safe trip.

As others have suggested.. play the story levels to get a great sense of what all kind of gameplay we have all experienced as well as check out the Showcase and Cool Levels here in the Level Showcase to get a taste of where we have taken and ran all over the place with those concepts.

In the meantime.. work on your skills and try small to medium size objects.. scenery, whatever perks your fancy. Also as already suggested, check out the tutorials located on the tab up top for some great tips and a wealth of info.

I wouldn't put too much pressure on yourself on completing a level as much as getting used to the tools as well as the Uh oh's that will come while creating. In other words, it's not as big of a deal if you paint yourself in a corner on something small. ..but again.. you can do whatever you want as playing with it all is the only way to get better! We have ALL been there!

..and as always.. if you have any questions just ask!

Good luck and have fun!

Welcome to LBPC slutzinc. And I am truly sorry to hear about your Grandfather. For many of us, Grandfathers are definitely heros and legends... mine certainly were, and will always stand tall in my mind.

When you are ready to create, here are a few things to keep in mind...

You're in the very same state we all were when we started using the Create features of LBP. My suggestion is to go into a blank Level on your Moon, and start placing basic squares of the different materials that are in your Material popit to see what they look like. Then do the same with the Stickers popit, placing a varierty of stickers and colors on the square materials you just placed.

Once you've done that, use the Tools popit and explore what each sensor, switch, piston, bolt, etc. is, and work through the tutorials for these tools.

Obviously this will take some time, but it's a great way to learn. Once you have these basics under your belt, check out some of the Tutorials here on LBPC in the Help forum, and do a text search for "tutorial" Levels on the LBP PS Network and play some of those Levels. Some are actually very good, and some were even created by members of LBPC.

And, while you're doing all of the above, start creating a Level with what you've learned. Don't be afraid to explore, experiment or make mistakes.

Most of all, have fun.

Thanks for the warm thoughts, people. Much appreciated, and I predict they will come as a bit of comfort during tomorrow's funeral. Yes, my grandfather was a bit of a hero to me. Actually, both were, but the one on my father's side died when I was just 10, so I didn't get to know him too well. That being said, some of his views on the world and politics have continued to influence me, even after his death.

My grandfather on my mother's side, who passed away last Friday, was the kind of grandfather who could always tell a good story. He had the ability to tell tales and stories with so much verve (is that the right word? I'm a bit tired...) that you couldn't not pay attention. And he always rounded them off with a big, heavy laugh. I guess all those stories he told is some of what inspired me to try and become a writer.

(This might an idea for a thread. In what ways have your grandparents been your heroes and influenced you?)

(Runs off to general discussion...)

And thank you all for those small tips to get started. I have played around with the editor, but I think that taking my time, placing blocks and stickers, placing each tool and see what it does is a good way to get to know the tools available.

Actually, I've got a friend who, when I told him I'd bought LBP went "ZOMG! I have to try it!" So I'm planning to invite him over, and let the two of us go bananas in the editor, learning from each other's mistakes. (And if and when the whole level comes crashing down, I've got someone to blame.)

My condolences on your grandfather, I too lost a grandfather recently, and know its hard. But still, life goes on.

And now that thats out of the way, welcome to the forums! As to your request about learning the ropes, i also suggest you search out what are called "logic gates" (after the switch tutorials). These little guys allow the creator to go hog wild with effects and whatnot, and are a must have for mechanical creations. I believe Incinerator22 has a nice tutorial with prizes, and so does vanemiera. But as the others have said, its a bit about learning from experience. Most people don't end up making amazing godly levels from the get go (though there are some who do), but you can see from earlier levels how much some creators have grown.

Enjoy your stay here at LBPC, see you around

sorry I'm late.

It's really an amazing game, and next to nothing? luuuucky!
in fact the reason I bought a PS3 was seeing a little video of the create mode at fry's before LBP came out. (I've told this story before)

I had been standing there staring up at the monitor, mouth agape (and drooling) when a sales-person asked if I needed assistance (or a spit-cup).
"what is that amazing thing?" I queried.
"that's a monitor screen", replied the sales rep, "we can make pictures with it,sir." . then he showed me his lighter.

"MAGIC MAN MAKE FIRE!" I screamed, and shortly was directed to the front door, and invited to never return again.

anywasy, I really liked your imagery "nun with a concussion" LMAO I had much the same reaction.

I've played in create with two people, and it's and interesting experiance. If one player is moving an object that the other is standing on, some one can get flung around pretty good. we spent houres just tossing each other around.

welcome to the Little Big Planet experiance!

And, yes, I can't wait for Online Create.

(BTW, that 'nun with concussion' analogy is a line I borrowed from Stephen Moffat's fantastic series, "Coupling.")

Ah, welcome to the intimidating world that is the creator! You've just been buried in a world of possibilities, you can create virtually anything that fits inside the thermometer.

It's also awesome that you recognized H4H for what it is- a virus hurting LBP. Way to be!

The advice I would have given myself when I started using the creator-
1- As burnvictim said, learn to use logic gates. They'll expand the limitations of simple switches to advanced logic, and they are pretty simple once you've used them before.
2- Learn to use the grid and Front view well. I didn't use them when I started creating, I thought the grid was only useful for making stairways. Since then I've realized the grid is amazing for anything you'd like to be nice and even, or aligned with other objects in the level.
3-Learn what all of the options of each tool, pistons, motor bolts, wobble bolts... More importantly, learn the options of switches (directional, one shot, on/off) and what each option does to various things.

Creating is beastly time consuming and requires both patience and experience with it's quirks, but it's oh so rewarding when you've created a level you're really proud of. Good luck!

Oh, and we have lots of talented people here that would be willing to help if you have questions. Rtm is said to be amazing at ingame logic (I've never seen him in action, but I'll take others' words for it), Morgana's levels are absolutely beautiful and artisitc, and if nothing else I can help you learn to make music levels or custom level music.

I wouldn't say it's the best game ever ? for me, that honor would fall to Dark Chronicle ? but it's without a doubt one of the best I've ever played. The platforming is fantastic, and the ability to create (and the quality of) levels is just the icing on an already delicious cake.

I finished the last of the story levels yesterday, so for the foreseeable future, I'll be collecting prize bubbles I've missed, and find my way around the creator. Most of it's pretty intuitive, but I'm really looking forward to find new ways to use the tools available. Incinerator22's logic tutorial level was just amazing and gave me a wealth of new ideas.

Not saying that I'll pull anything good out of my hat, though...

tip don't wait until you finish getting 100% on all the levels to go into creator! some of the creator tutorials give away items. I know of one for sure that you need in the gardens section.2009-08-15 11:37:00

Thanks for the heads up, guys. At the moment, I'm trying to find the missing prize bubbles and acing levels, when I'm not busy exploring the options available in the editor. I've quickly discovered that just the sheer range of materials available has got my creative juices flowing. I'm not guaranteeing that anything tangible will come out of it, but at least I'm having fun playing around, trying to create objects and contraption. (I even made a "mad scientist" outfit solely for this purpose.)2009-08-16 01:54:00
