The Sig Contest V5!!!!! (Rules, themes and feedback): ROUND 5

It's back and I suspect the competition will be hotter than ever!

I just hope I can match up to the high hosting standards of my predecessors, but watch carefully; I'll be mixing it up and making each round more and more challenging, making sure this tests every skill you have.. and then probably some skills you don't have yet!

OK.. first off, some guidelines and rules...



Anyone can join, provided their first entry is before the deadline. Each round, one contestant will be knocked out.

Max Size limit: 500px wide x 200px tall. You can use this space however you like. For instance, if you want to make a pop-out sig, you may want to set your main area at 500x150 and save 50px top or bottom for your pop-out transparent area.

No obscenities, racism, sexism or images that incite aggression will be tolerated and will result in immediate disqualification.

Other than that, no limits!!!



To make sure everyone is treated as fairly as possible, I will be marking each and every entry using the following guidelines (max 100%). This way, every aspect of your work is being considered and you get clear indications on what you're doing well at and what areas you need to improve on.

MARKING SYSTEM



Concept/ Interpretation: Max 20%: how you come up with your idea based on the theme.

Originality: 20%: how much of your sig is completely different or made from scratch.

Composition: 10%: how well you put individual components together to make it look.... good!

Use of colour: 5%: does it clash? does it suit the theme?

Use of texture: 5%: do you want it smooth, or gritty, or have something in the background?

Depth and contrast: 10%: How well do you use light and dark to bring your art to life?

Use of text/font for signature: 15%: A critical part that should "fit" with the rest of the sig.

Finishing/Polish: 15%: The final touches and border - does it look pro?


1st Round: Deadline Sunday 16th August 24:00 GMT


"My Favourite..."

My favourite what you might ask? Well... just about anything you can think of. It could be your best colour, pet, movie or even chewing gum flavour!

A fairly open theme to get everyone's artistic juices flowing.


2nd Round: Deadline Sunday 23rd August 24:00 GMT


"A Splash of Colour"

Another fairly simple and open theme, designed to see how well you can put colour together.

Too many can make a sig look terrible, but too few can look dull and uninteresting.

Try using a balanced set of colours and manipulate the tones to fit in and add depth.


3rd Round: Deadline Sunday 30th August 24:00 GMT


"Life in Nature is Rough Going!"

Getting a bit trickier now.

As well as being nature related, I'll be looking at the use of textures to give your sig more interest...



4th Round: Deadline Sunday 6th September 24:00 GMT


"In Deep Water"
So what's that all about I hear you ask...

Two things here and one of them is tricky..

Firstly, I'll be looking for.. depth - how much your sig stands out and how you've used highlight and shadow to make you images look three dimensional.

Secondly, this should be water related (duh..) so it could be under, over, in.. or.. err.. out!


5th Round: Deadline Sunday 13th September 24:00 GMT


"Lets Try Again From The Beginning."

This one may be trickier for some!

Very simple.. no copied images, googled images or manipulated images - you have to make something from scratch! It could be a scanned pencil drawing, a 3D render or just use of brushes in an art package!

I'm not just looking at skill here - I'll be checking out your skills at creation without the help of something else.

You can of course use another image for inspiration, but beware... I might ask you how you did it!

You try so hard with so much enthusiasm! I can't be biased, but you should have more confidence in your work. It takes time to get really good at your craft, so never lose faith.

I was actualy gunna enter this -.- had the sig i wanted to enter aswell lol spent about 5 hours makin it... Was a ISA aiming at a angry sack boy in a dark room with cracks on the wall with my psn at bottum and at the top it said Killzone (in original title art colour) Planet (original art colour of lbp) 2 (killzone -2- original art colour) and then when i tried to upload -.- it wouldnt let me cuz the **** picture is 800kb+ oh that makes me mad lol nvm ill just watch, rhy youve gotta see what ive created though I'll send it you see if you can decrease the size in ANY way what so ever *crosses fingers*2009-08-05 16:35:00

There are a number of issues relating to people being on holiday... meaning that some people are worried they might miss a deadline and be voted off by default.

I can't however, put a hold on the competition, as this would slow it down and it would lose interest.

So... I have a compromise...

I will post 5 additional themes now - for each successive week, together with each deadline date.

This way, guys and gals that know they are going on holiday have the opportunity to pre-enter for each week they will be away.. thus not missing any deadlines.

The only disadvantage of course is that peeps on hols will have to work twice as hard before they go!... oh... and they could have been knocked out before the next one is due!! XD

This is the best solution I could think of.. so no excuses!

Does everyone agree? Or have a better solution?

BTW - LuckyShot has figured out the max normal sig size permitted by the forum which turns out to be 500x200 pixels.

I have changed... yes changed the rules (before any entries) to say that the maximum sig size is 500x200, but you can use this area however you want.

So many questions! Haha when you say make it into a texture.. you mean when I repeated around the bottom or the overlay exotic tree branches? The telephone pole was a picture I took and I just reworked it a bunch with brushes and layering then added the grungey-acidic looking border at the end. First off, I wanted to say how amazing this initial round has been. Whether its the summer weather, the constant BBQ's or abundant holidays, you guys are putting in some serious work here and I wanted to thank you all for entering.

My round 4 image - I created all the shades n stuth, bubbles just got from google lol created the shaders on the sharks, i dunno if i just havent figured out how to make borders yet but for some reason just creatin that small border was hard lol and the writing looked a hell of alot better on photoshop :S but oh well i wont get to round 4 so heres my round 4 picture lol =D

Awesome picture, Like the people standing on the floating land , is that your round 2 entry? the one where you gotta make use with colours? if so youve beat mine i wasnt very good at using the colour tools on my programme when i entered my sig for round 2 ^^ just starting to get to grips with it now ... I really like Leonardo's sigs! I have no idea if he's even in the competition or not though... Man - how complicated, glad I'm not the judge this time.. .. haha.

Oh yeah I was definitely cheating by double dipping but seriously I have NO time to do this, but I still do it which means it costs me sleep, so I might be doing that a couple times... but I really do love making people sigs... it's awesome. And round two is totally original work, if I can figure out how to make those dang rounds... lol

Judgement Day!!!!!

Results (http://www.freecrm.x10hosting.com/lbpc/sig_scoring.php) are up - a little earlier!!

This week has given me a real problem. Just to let you know, I mark each one as I see it. I don't compare each one with another and don't know the rankings until I add them all up. This week, we have a genuine tie between two competitors, which I'm not going to change.

As ir0nmaid3nfan has not been able to get his entry in (great shame.. he was doing really well), he obviously goes out, but due to the tie, I will NOT be knocking anyone else out!!! It would have been unfair to alter the marks just to push one out and TBH, I couldn't make a difference between the two.

Round 5 begins! As it says in the rules - no googling, no copies - just original art. You can choose your own theme, but I am going to ask that you keep a record of your work with screendumps so I can see how you did them. I don't care what style you use either... it could be pencil, crayon, photoshop brushed - whatever takes your fancy.

Was working on it today, but no luck on getting anything good so far. Other than drawing the incredibly beautiful Hayley Williams (lead singer of Paramore) I've done very little.....

FINALS!!!!!!!!!

I really wasn't expecting to be judging a final tonight, but Lucky's was conspicuous by his absence which means just two left!!!!

This round was meant to be tricky and I think any artist that manages to pull something half decent together has to be creditted for their efforts.

It was also a round designed to sort out the men from the boys, so if anyone was good in Photoshop might fail dismally on this round.

Remarkably, both entries were brilliant... which gave me a real headache... so I had to resort to the marking to help me through...

Coxy - this piece was amazing - showing a huge improvement on your skills and I am delighted you entered this contest - you've made it very difficult for your fellow competitors!

I have really enjoyed this contest and hope you have too. Each round was specificaly tailored to test particular skills and hopefully focus them on each signature element.
