Creating "fake" hazards

Archive: 13 posts

This will result in platforms/areas that appear to be on fire or electrified, while still being normal, and not killing the player.

1 - Create a block of rubber; any size, any layer(s). Put some kind of brain on it. Place a button switch, set it to one shot, and attach it to the brain. Hit the button, when you hear the sound, pause (Not with start, the up arrow)

2 - Capture the block right before it fades away (while in pause mode). Place an emitter, emit that block, and set the emitted block to an infinite life span. Capture that new object, and delete the old one.

3 - Now, select the rubber you just made, and make your platform. You should be able to walk through it. If not, repeat steps 1 and 2.

4 - Set your fake rubber platform on fire/electricity. You should still be able to walk through it.

5 - Create a big block of wood, which should be bigger then your fake platform. Make a block of rubber, and it should be even bigger then the wood.

6 - Select your platform, and copy it into the wood. Now select that whole thing, and copy it into the rubber. Delete the outside wood and rubber, and try to stand on your platform.

If you can succesfully stand on the platform without dieing - congratulations! You just made a fake hazard!

Unfortunately, you cant draw with this object (ie. hit L3 on it and draw like with most blocks). However, selecting it and hitting triangle once, and moving the cursor, will bring up two objects; Your fake hazardous one, and the real, solid platform. Delete the solid, unhazardous one, and draw with the fake one. When you are done, repeat steps 5 and 6.

Hope this helped! Also, does anyone want pictures?

Cheers!

EDIT:

Check out some threads on how to plasmafy objects! A similar type of glitch:

Sounds cool, could be very handy for both visual effects and gameplay effects.2009-08-04 01:58:00

Yep, it looks very cool when walking on electricity

Also, If anybody knows of any other materials that don't flicker when combined, feel free to say; rubber only works on certain occasions

Easier way to do this: The indian drum can be walked on without you dying if it is made lethal.2009-08-05 07:09:00

RedMagus, those show people how to make plasmified objects, not electrified or firey objects. And I'm not sure if you know, but these aren't just fake platforms, you can walk on them while they are electrified.2009-08-07 01:36:00

This is different, and very useful in my opinion. It allows you to make hazards you can walk on, not walk through or normal objects that act like plasma.
