Social Groups with Threads

Archive: 9 posts

I think there was a discussion about this a few months ago. But now that I've tried out the new groups feature over in MNRCentral.... Can we have the same features over here???

One thing is, the Group avatars are looking a lot nicer over there

What I really want is to be able to post Threads within groups. It'll make it so much easier to arrange things in a more private-ish and comfortable zone.

This really only sprung to mind when I decided I was gonna make an Art group just the same as the Art group I've created over at MNRC. With threads enabled, we could have little drawing exercise threads or collaboration threads or even crits & feedback threads. But its only now that I realized that we can't create group threads over here :S

Sure we can always use the Art and Creativity section, but I think Groups will have a lot more impact in general if threads were enabled. Awkward to moderate I guess

I posted a mod for this in my improved social groups thread, so we COULD do this without upgrading to 3.8, which would render some mods here unusable...

This soulwd indeed help, and I'm pretty sure he could have turned it off at MNRC anyway, but... um yeah. I'd like it, but yeah.

So it requires an update to the site Engine to make this a reality? How much would that cost?

This really would be a great feature, even though there would probably be just a few Groups utilizing it.

That's the mod to do it without updating the site engine.

Anyway, CC said no before, yet MNRC has it because it's 3.8 but I'd assume he could trigger it off so... yeah.

i'd like to bring this back up (it's only a week old ;_. It would help greatly, and... well, yeah. We have it at MNRC, and I believe we can change it to as it is at LBPC, so i'dlike to know if the opinion on having it at LBPC has changed, or if it would cause too much lag?2009-08-14 02:07:00

The reason we can't use RockSauron's addon suggestion is because it's way too resource heavy. vB3.8x handles social group discussions in a different way than the forums, so they don't negatively impact the forum as a whole. However, this addon would create a forum for every group above X number of members. If that number is high, people will complain about it being too difficult to get a private forum - if that number is moderate or low, the performance of the site will be negatively impacted. Sorry, but I can't install it safely. However, when vBulletin 4.0 comes around, I'll work hard to upgrade both this site and MNRCentral as soon as I can, which means the feature will eventually make it's way here.2009-08-16 22:51:00
