How many of you have been officially recognised by Mm?

Archive: 64 posts

I mean this in terms of level building.

So it could be a crown, an Mm pick, even getting your level hearted by LittleXim.

I'm guessing there will be quite a lot on this site, I know of quite a few already but I shall let you all tell your own stories

No crown, but two of my levels were in the MM picks, which in my opinion is better than getting a crown anyway. 2009-08-02 12:18:00

In terms of levels? No.
Although I am working on a level I've been making since March, on and off (mainly off).
It's been interrupted a lot though...what with my clubhouse having been my main priority in LBP from April to June, with Sackcast coming along somewhere withing that time, and AOTEACFOS, and now Project Awesome, I've only really spent a few hours on it in all that time.

So at the moment the chances of me even finishing a 'proper' level are very slim, let alone being recognised by Mm.

Depends, really. If you get a crown through making really awesome levels (eg. GruntosUK) I'm pretty sure you'd be gadding around like a giddy little schoolgirl unlike being selected in MM picks (which would just make your day/week )

I haven't been recognised by Mm yet. My levels very rarely get noticed by anyone, and most of my levels are just minigames.2009-08-02 12:33:00

I think I can see both sides of this. GruntoUK got his crown for his first Siberia level after it being submitted to LBP UK Youtube Channel...now while a crown is obviously better than an Mm pick. An Mm pick comes completely off their own back and you don't submit your level for it.

There's no doubt that a Crown is receiving a 'bigger recognition' in terms of return. However, because the Mm pick comes completely of their own accord...it's a tough decision.

Saying that I still think I'd prefer the crown haha.

As a Crown winner I have to say I'd rather be spotted by MM and given a job like Johnee.
That's the ultimate recognition.

The crown is a double edged sword anyway. The only thing it's ever brought me are more kids wanting to be my 'friend' !! so they can ask for my account details and rip me off. I've deleted about a dozen friends requests this week alone from people I've never even heard of.

I don't think anyone can beat out Johnee or donkeyshow's awesomeness, but I love the limelight as much as anyone else

I got my crown for LittleBig Contra: Stage 5 - Snowfield... the twitter feed from MM that started the blitzkreig of coverage made my day -

http://twitter.com/rexbox/status/1259067583

"@offworld we just watched and played Contra LBP levels and trailer in the Mm office while chugging beer and cheering 10:17 AM Feb 27th from Twitterrific in reply to offworld"

...and this from the 1up front page feature where they interviewed both Konami and MM -

"Media Molecule's also gone on the record in support of the project.

"I was really amazed by the scope of the project," Media Molecule artist Rex Crowle told us. "It's exciting seeing teams collaborating together to create larger projects in the same way that we all jam together at Media Molecule. The attention to detail was superb, I loved the little touches like the emitted explosion stickers, to give it that proper 8-bit action game feel. It also reminded me how insanely hard the games we used to play were -- I need to get back into training!"

I remember Neverynnal sent an email to them about our 2x SEMINAL GEMINI level, since he was so hyped about the flying paintinator idea, and actually got a response back that also made my day -

"From: luci@mediamolecule.com

Subject: Your level

Hey ***** J

Re: Your email below, one of our designers had this to say:

Hey *****,

We had loads of fun with this level. We had that idea but just never made anything with it, good to see you guys doing it proud. Love the boss at the end, that must have been tricky to make!

MarkS

Well done you J

Cheers!

I don't know. For me a crown is really just another costume piece. The picks mean a lot more to me, because as you, Jack, said you can't really ask for them or rather do something to help you get picked aside from making decent levels.

PS: I would of course be very happy if I got a crown for the levels I make.
But if the crowns is to be "worth" more than a pick you should only get if you a bunch of very good levels and not just one or two.

I don't have a crown, but Hyper Cube was a recent Mm Pick. (It also appeared on the 'Millionth level' advert - but don't blink or you'll miss it!).

It was a nice surprise, and I'm grateful - especially as it's kind of a pat on the back from the actual developers.

But, it still doesn't come close to the satisfaction I get from building a level and having my friends and other nice gadders having fun and hopefully enjoying themselves.

I also want to mention something else. Some of the people I've met and become quite close to is because of this game. I've had a plethora of good times playing levels with people, and I can't count how many belly-laughs!

Sounds a bit like sentimental twaddle, I know, but it's true.

Well, I was recognized by media molecule and got a crown for it by accident, when I made an animation making fun of how everyone was freaking out over getting a crown. For me, I think it was cooler to me that my animation and art was spotlighted, rather than a level. That's just me though. I definitely care about my comics, animations and artwork more than I care about my levels.

I also had a level hearted by LittleXim (the fall of winter - in my opinion, my worst level), but it was right at the moment when media molecule decided to stop doing mm picks for like 4 months, so it never got showcased on their site or anything.

And finally, I, along with three other people, was also recognized by media molecule for something else, but that's all I'm allowed to say right now.

I want to go on record saying that I am a firm believer that crowns should definitely be given out for people who make levels, and quality levels, at that. It's nice to get featured in mm's picks, but I certainly think that there are some creators who are a cut above the rest, who keep turning out quality levels time and time again, and they should be rewarded for that. Seeing Grant get his crown gave me hope that there might be more crownings like this in the future!

I was so excited about getting one at the time, because I put in alot of work for what won it, and felt like I deserved it because I'd put out levels like False Idols 0, 1, 2, SEMINAL GEMINI, Metal Slug Solid, L.O.V.E. and Facial Reconstruction from November to Februrary (along with tons of demos and minigame stuff that's not around anymore). IMO there wasn't many people as prolific and consistently high quality as me at the time, and I also felt like Jaeyden and donkeyshow got a long overdue reward out of it too, since both were extremely awesome creators.

I quickly realized they gave them out for pretty much anything to pretty much anyone though (immediately actually, when I saw that sackroll had also won someone a crown)... there's been some "questionable" levels in some of the older MM picks too from time to time, and you CAN increase your chance of getting one with well placed promotional work or impressing the right people to put a good word in enough times. That last batch of picks was nothing but pure awesome though, regardless of how they ended up there... they even said it was the video for starcruiser that prompted the play. At least it still comes down to the level quality with MM picks.

I'm definitely a believer that Crowns should be given out to consistance creators who publish continuous high quality levels. I think there's no denying that the 'honour' of the crown has been diluted a bit with some questionable give aways and some pretty unrelated and poor competitions.

However that being said, anyone who said they wouldn't like one is probably fibbing!

I know personally if I was to receive a crown I would want it for to be for nothing more than making levels that they deem worthy of such an accolade. Hence why I doubt I would ever enter the competitions. I think I'd prefer it if I got them off their own back. That being said, I have submitted my last 3 levels (FT2, Calamity Construction and Industrial Assistance) for the Crown giveaway on the Official Youtube UK Channel, alas to no avail.

I love how close things we feel to Mm due to things like this though. The fact they are able to recognise our work and point it out over everyone else's. Even things like being hearted by LittleXim is a nice little nod, just their way of saying 'good job, we appreciate it'.

Granted, all of these are feelings that I am yet to experience

Jack, you have to be patient about this, trust me. Grant submitted his level to them in April. He didn't get the crown until late June or early July, right? Personally, I think your levels are very high quality. I think it's only a matter of time before you've joined the royal family.

There's a few people I think absolutely deserve a crown, and you're one of them. It's too bad that it can't just be them randomly getting a light bulb over their heads and going "hey, jackofcourse is one of the most popular creators on here, he does our style better than us sometimes, is 100% consistent, and has two levels on page 1 of highest rated that actually deserve to be there... maybe we should give him some props"

They'd be able to give out more crowns to people based solely on their portfolio of levels or status and reputation, and still stay within their 50-a-year limit if they didn't hand them out like candy for contests.

How many are left for this year?

It's all good In all honestly it's not something that is going to change my LBP experience in anyway. I am very proud of my levels and what I have achieved in regards to how I've progressed as a creator and how my levels have been increasingly popular. A crown or any other kind of recognition isn't going to change that.

It's the opinion of you guys and knowing that the people who play the game are enjoying what I've created that matters most. I'm sure a lot of people on this site would agree with that.

I just thought this would be an interesting discussion, in both who's received such recognition and what it means to people.

We should start a thread on workshop called "Crown Jackofcourse"... seemed to work for Stevenl. Someone started a thread for him because he was such an asset to the community, and sony/mm gave him a crown. I think this cause just might warrant such a thread.2009-08-02 14:59:00

See, I'm in the opposite boat. I've got the symbol, as well as the pride and confidence in my work, but can't get the plays and ratings for the life of me - I have a tough time even getting my stuff to fly in these communities outside of a sorta small circle of people who know and like my work, and always check out new material.

Pop into a pod with any random kid on LBP and watch his friends freak out... I guarantee you you'll get them going "OMG IT'Z YOU!!!" and be instantaneously hit with 3 friend requests

ha maybe a couple months ago... the few times I wear it nowadays, I think people think I made it using CENTURION's costume tutorial and don't even think twice about it lol.

If you do ever win one, don't take a picture with it on any page 1 levels though, or russellsmuscles will come after you

Fun fact about the crown, you can't account share it with people unless you have your log-in on that playstation. This is actually a great thing to tell people if they ask you to account share with them.

I know this because we have two playstation 3's in my house, and the crown only works on my husband's playstation when I have my log-in information on there. If I delete my password or sign-in stuff, it doesn't work.

I can't tell you how many times I've had to tell people that I can't account share. After-all, my animation not only got on the mm blog, it also got on the playstation blog, and after that it was a solid month of people begging me to share the crown with them.

I guess I should be thanking centurion. After his tutorial, i don't get the emails quite as much

Nobody ever asked me to account share... I did get tons of messages asking me how I got one. For about a week I would tell them all ridiculous stories about how they could win a crown...stuff like "you have to get the #1 score on all the story levels" or "you have to win a dance competition at MM's offices" or "you have to preorder LBP2 at Gamestop" etc

After the first batch I just started ignoring all of them.

I received a crown for the golf competition which feels kind of cheap considering the quality of some of the winning levels, and the fact that I can name about 10 creators off the top of my head that probably deserve one more than I do.

As a really unsatisfied creator that has not released anything yet, I would like to have the skill to have a crown, not just the crown itself.

Anyone know if a 3D level has ever been picked by MM for a crown or anything. My guess is that MM will not promote 3D levels even if they are pure genius.

EDIT: Just realised I said 3D when LBP is already 3D. *extra layer levels

I was awarded a crown for my golf challenge entry. I also found winning to be a dubious honor since it appears that the winners were chosen with a dart board. I consider the whole experience a failure, I thought I'd get a lot of plays on one of my levels for once, that was the only reason I entered and it didn't happen.2009-08-03 01:54:00

I got an MM Pick for Cause And Effect 3 awhile back, with mrsupercomputer and a few others. It was awesome to have them just pick it out of the blue, but I guess I'd rather have a crown.

But since I only make levels I don't really see it happening. If they were gonna give me one I think I'd have gotten it by now.

hey all when i first started creating i did so only to try and beat my own imagination, i was so excited to publish my first level, which was warzone one, you would not believe how excited i got when i recieved 50 play and 5 hearts! i was deliriously happy just to know people were playing something i had created, i was never spotlighted, i have never had a crown, nor was i in mm picks< in the end all i wanted was for people to play my level and have fun, i loved all feedback good and bad because it meant people actually carred about something i had done, my job before i worked at mm was just a plain boring self employed builder, now i am so unbelievable happy to have been chosen by mm to help them carry on creating, for me there is no greater honour i could ask for, and the support i recieved from here, and my psn friends was overwhelming, i hope you all carry on creating, because we do see what you do here and we would not be the same without you2009-08-03 19:32:00

Well my crown for Siberia pt.1 never came from MM, it came from Sony and I've never had a MM pick as yet. Me and three others did a little something for MM recently though

I dont create my levels in the hope of a MM pick (or the crown for that matter, I won it like 7 months after that level was finished), I create them for myself, and try to incorporate as much of the feedback you lot left on my last level into it. I've just restarted a 60% complete version of Mars III because I did'nt like the look or feel of it, and if I don't like, theres no chance you picky bunch will enjoy it

I think Johnee is the perfect example of what we all wish to achieve, an awesome level that got noticed and led to a once in a lifetime opportunity all of us could only dream of. Congratulations again Johnee
