Help on making a TV

Archive: 15 posts

Hellololo Every body, I have an idea today, surprisingly. Im trying to make a Tv, not one that is too complicated with a sequence of pictures, just a TV outline, and inside is a black screen, which represents the TV is off. You press a button/grab a switch/pull a lever and the black screen is replaced by a picture, to represent the TV is on. Im just beginning on LBP so im having quite a tough time with this. The closest i've gotten is getting the black screen too re-emit -.-" if anyone has an idea on how to do this, please, please, PLEASE post your ideas Thanks People Of LBPC XD2009-08-01 18:52:00

Here's a simple way to make it work. Have an emitter set up to emit the screen that you want displayed when the TV is on. Make sure it is emitting at .1 timing and the lifetime is infinite. Then, pause the game, delete the object that was emitted in the TV and put a block of dissolve in its place, inside the TV box. Use a black sticker to make the dissolve black (just blow it up real big and stick it on). Then, wire up a switch to the dissolve.

When the switch is triggered, the black dissolve OFF screen will disappear and the ON screen will emit in its place.

Hope that's all you needed

Ya, that was what i was going to do, but im trying to get it so that you can turn it from off, too on, and back too off, and etc etc, something like that. I wish they had two way buttons :[2009-08-01 19:40:00

Well, you could make it work with a toggle switch, but the logic to make it reset would be intense.

You could always look into demitters, which is an advanced method created by member rtm223. Search for him on this site or on PSN, and you'll find his thread/level talking about them.

I warn you, though, there's not going to be a simple way to do it unless you set it up so there are two images attached to a piston, and flipping the switch would move one picture into view, and move the other out of view. It would not look as good, but it would be much easier.

It's a fairly simple mechanism, if I'm reading your post correctly. Simply make a two way switch (a hollow dark matter rectangle, with piston connected to a mag switch inside, two mag switches on either end of the rectangle). Have one mag switch set to dissolve one "Screen" and emit the other, and vice versa for the second mag switch in the rectangle.2009-08-01 20:06:00

Tevor, your solution won't entirely work because the switches can't be connected to the emitted objects.

Really cophermc? I can think of an easy way off the top of my head o.o

Make both pieces out of dissolve, but set them to dissolve with different colored key switches. Emit them in the screen as cophermc suggested. But in addition to the screen being emitted, emit a tiny piece of dissolve with the color key on it, set to a very small lifetime. This will dissolve the screen, and you can switch back the same way.

Not sure exactly what you were getting at, but thanks for the correction.2009-08-01 20:15:00

Oh snap, you're right. Well, the next easiest way would be to replace the dissolving action with the extension of a piston connected to to a piece of stone, in your TV, destroying the block.2009-08-01 20:17:00

Well, since I wasn't very helpful before, I decided to make you a little prototype. It's more complicated than what BV was probably suggesting, but it's still not too bad. It's influenced from rtm's demitter switches, and has a built in toggle. I didn't feel like publishing a level just for this, so I added it to my "Currency Device" level, which is copyable. Just copy the level to your moon, and enter the level in create mode. You should see it off to the right. Capture it as your own object and fiddle away.

I will post pictures here in a bit explaining how it works.

Edit: picture time...

The first picture shows the default, OFF screen.

When I jump on the button once, in the second picture, it's hard to see, but the emitter on the small, skinny block emits a green key attached to some DM directly above it. This triggers the black dissolve to disappear, extends the piston and turns on the emitter for the white dissolve.

When I jump on the button the second time, it emits a new key attached to DM right above the the new position of the skinny block. This dissolves the white block, retracts the piston and turns on the emitter for the black block.

*You can't see the green block because it's in the thin layer (for no reason at all) in the back of the hole. But, you can tell where it is by looking at which of the green mag key switches are lit up. There is no key in the first picture.

**The colored dissolve blocks dissolve because they have a green key switch attached to themselves with a small angle. When a green key is emitted directly below them, they "kill" themselves.

Thats a good idea Burnvictim, but won't that make the screens switch on their own? Im looking too make it so that you press a button/grab switch or something of that sort to make it switch. like pressing the power button on a remote control.

Edit: Woah Woah Woahhh Looks fancy comphermc XD thanks for the prototype, when i get the finished version up, ill post some pics and such XD thanks mate.

well, the key switch emitting would be controlled by the player switching, similar to what cophermc did. Great demo btw, thats a very compact way of getting the job done 2009-08-02 00:38:00

The simplest idea I can think of is a fast, off-screen piston set to directional. Use a state switch to change the direction. If you need any more help, I can hopefully make an example for you.2009-08-02 00:56:00

Comphermc, is your prototype morking on a similar principle to my LED counter (queueing up emitted dissolve pieces).

BSprague's idea is the indeed the simplest indeed, but it requires that the TV is embedded into a wall or similar, and the screen is set back from the frame. But then it doesn't switch on and off with a puff of green smoke either
