Players Online

Archive: 16 posts

Has anyone noticed that the 'players online' that pops up when you have community selected seems a little fishy?

For example, mine has jumped from around 9,000 to over 100,000 in a matter of minutes. At this very moment mine is showing over 560,000 players on, while the game only sold around 1.4 million units (I think?). It's definitely worth sticking with that long, but most of the people that play it won't. I'm just not positive the numbers it provides are entirely accurate.

What do you guys think? Am I going crazy?

True, but I do believe that the player count is refreshed every half hour or something...I'm not sure.2009-08-01 10:19:00

I've never even noticed that. I'll have to take note next time.

To be honest I always skip over that to get to the search button. I don't play the so called 'cool levels' on page 1 because the system just doesn't work. Most of them are rubbish that shouldn't even be there or the same levels that have been there for weeks, even months, so I'm not going to play them and add to the problem.

I made a thread like this a while back on a different forum. It is really strange, but I wouldn't put much stock into it, unless there is a reason that 500,000+ people would be signing on at once.2009-08-01 11:48:00

Yea, I don't think there accurate at all, I remember like last Wednesday at noon it said 968,000 players were playing it! There's no way that many people were playing on a Wednesday afternoon.2009-08-02 00:17:00

I've never seen numbers upwards of 250,000. At first I thought it was just that the majority of players were European and that is why I would never see numbers that high. But then I looked and saw your location was Georgia, and realized that I'm even more confused than I was when I started.

I'm on usually every day, not at noon always (because of work), but still on at some point during the day. It's strange that this number fluctuates so drastically. I wonder if we could get some official word on this?

I'm usually never on at noon either and I actually rarely ever see it say more than 100,000 people online. I was really suprised when it said almost a million people were online. I also wonder where the majority of LBP players are from, that would really help to know what times most people are online.

This is all very weird. I've never noticed more than 20,000 people online at once. Granted, I've not been paying attention, but even 100,000 would very high.2009-08-02 01:24:00

I took a picture when it topped 100,000 on mine.

For me in the weeks evening it's always like ~5000.

Week-end like right now it's like ~10 000

I don't see how you people get such high numbers. There is bound to be a mistake because your number would be wayyyyyyyyy lower than 100 000 if it was only regional.

Yeah I'm with Ranger on this one. I checked a few times earlier and it always seemed to be around 6500.

Whether those figures are right or not i've no idea but I do know I'm still getting atrocious lag whenever i'm with anyone else.

This lag issue is the one thing that could drive me away from this game completely because it just ruins the whole experience. I wish MM would tell us something because I'm losing faith that they're ever going to do anything about it.

Well, you're not lagging because there's 10 000 or 10 people on the MM servers. In fact, you lag because LBP works by "peer to peer connections".
The way this connection type works means it's completely dependant on the connection quality you have with the other players. If you have good connection and play with someone with an equally good connection near you, it's going to be pristine speed. If you connect with someone far enough with a slower connection than you, you will lag because of him.

Basically, when you lag it's always because of some player in the game with you.

I don't really pay that much attention to this feature, but when I check it usually says that there's around 7000-9000 people online, but I think sometimes for me the numbers can go as low as around 4000. I think your internet connection could affect the accuracy of these numbers.2009-08-02 12:53:00

I don't think so. A number is a number. The server counts up how many people are online, and it sends the number to your PS3. The strength of your internet connection doesn't factor in there, unless you don't have any internet at all, in which case there won't be a number there anyway.
