Trading in games for cash..

Archive: 15 posts

Right, anyone know about trading in games for cash in the UK?

I'm gonna try GAME, Gamestation, a little back alley shop, and HMV...

Do I need to be over 18 to get money? Or anything like that :|?

Well, Gamestation has millions of preowned games, so that's probably your safest bet.2009-07-31 19:28:00

Hey Miffy! How long has it been? 4, 5 months?

A lot of the time if you're under 18 they will only give store credit. Also, if they have a lot of a game in stock they'll pay you next to nothing. This usually happens with single player only games. What games are you trading anyway?

This Gamestation sounds like America's GameStop places, in which you can get ripped off--I mean SELL your games for (not a lot of) cash. In my experience, it's best to use eBay or some other place before going to places like that...2009-07-31 23:31:00

Gamestation is absolutely terrible for trade ins. Im skint at the moment (being a student and it being the summer holidays) so i was thinking for trading in Killzone 2 and FEAR 2 a couple of weeks ago. I call up Gamestation and ask how much they would give me for store credit (I buy all of my games from there) and they offer me ?8 for Killzone 2 and ?6 for FEAR 2. Absolute robbery. They then re-sell Killzone 2 for ?24.99 Pre-Owned and re-sell FEAR 2 for ?19.99 Pre-Owned.

Naturally I'm headed to eBay now!

That would be my advice. The chain stores markup is just so massive. Even when you factor in that people pay slightly less on ebay than in the stores, subtract listing fees, paypal fees and p&p, you are still looking to make more money on ebay. Personally, I'm a magpie and just hoard all my old games - Just so my shelves look full

Yeah don't go to the high street at all. You'll just get ripped off. Better to put them on ebay as suggested.

As an example i went to my local video game shop a couple of days ago as they have a board outside saying they give the best prices around.
I took in 7 PS2 games including MOH:Frontline, Half Life and Deus EX and they offered me ?15 for the lot. Of course I said thanks but no thanks and advise you to do the same if you definitely want cash for them.

If you're willing to trade I'm pretty sure there are swap sites now that you could search for.

Well, I'm not sure about other countries, but I imagine it would be the same for most western countries.

Most game stores make the most returns on their pre-owned second hand sector. A new release might sell for $110, but the store only makes around $10 from that, as they need to pay the publisher and distributor and so on and so on. But a just new release still selling for $110 they can give you say $60 for, which seems like a lot, but then they can resell it for $100 and make a good $40 from it, which is much better from their point of view. And they also as an added bonus appear to be giving the same game at a lower price point for those who are interested in such things.

Those are all $AUS, but you should get the idea. The longer a game has been out, the less money you will get for it to trade as a) the new game price has likely dropped and b) there are more copies out there, so more stock to sell, and the easier way to move stock is to reduce the cost and finally c) most people who want the game, barring rare or limited release games, probably have this game already, so the market will be smaller.

Add all those factors up and the older and more popular the game, the less return you will get at the end of the day for trade ins.

Sometimes stores have "trade in X system Y games and get Z off new releases" deals. That can be one way to get rid of near rubbish games you have at reasonable value, but some stores now have exclusion lists to stop them getting flooded with $5 mini-game trash.

As for cash trade ins, in Australia you need to provide photo identification, preferrably a driver's liscense, and sign to confirm your details before a trade can be accepted. This is to stop people stealing stuff and then getting money in a semingly legitimate way.

Hope that all helps!

I traded in about thirty games to a place called CEX and got about ?60 odd for the lot in store credit. It's decent though. Especially since all the games were PS2 era and they sucked. It's a good place to trade in games if you want money now. But eBay you will get better prices, more of a waiting time to sell, Having to pay P&P and the chance of it not selling at all...2009-08-03 15:37:00

Never. EVER. Sell your games at Gamestop.

I had about 12, perfectly new, and rated good games, with the manual, case, and no scratches on the disks. and they're in the radius of made in 2007-08. (I tried selling them last year.)

They only offered me $92.
