Spore Review-by Noon

Ok here goes...
I have played 3/4 of the game. I have just entered Space.
I don't think I need to wait till I conquer the Space phase to write a review.
I played the entire game on Hard, with a focus on Carnivore and Combat.

When I started SPORE up, it was a quick install, It had to uninstall the Creature Creator I purchased Months ago.
The intro cinematic was quick and to the point.
Cell Phase:
As you all know, you start out in primordial ooze in survival of the fittest gameplay. The visuals are nice. This Phase is done in layers. As you grow in size you break into a larger world where passive and dangerous creatures abound. This phase offers no challenge. Its a advanced version of Pacman.
What does take some getting used to is the crap controls and eating. The eating is almost broken in this phase. Maybe plant eating is easier?
Death is a no issue. No penalty. Its just a speed bump if you will. You can not fail in this phase. the options in the create portion in the game at this phase is extremely limited. But dont worry, you wont be here long.
Creature Phase
Woot, I am on land. I said to myself, "Now the game will take off!"
I was wrong. Once again the visuals were on par. The goal of this stage is to complete the goals of eating and gathering parts for the creature creator. This was an incredibly boring experience full of repetitive gameplay. I felt like I was grinding xp. Anyways, the one high point of this phase is seeing what creatures populated from the online databank of all our creations. This made me want to explore an otherwise boring landscape, and grind enough to move onto the next phase. Combat is as limited as it was in the ooze. The peaceful , diplomatic options were not encourage in this phase.
Tribe Phase
Hey look I got family and an army!
This Phase is where the game saves itself and starts to move in the right direction. You start to develop gathering, weapons, and music. This is also the Phase where your creature is complex and (forgive me for the lack of a better word) "cool". The creature creator peaks at this phase.

The village allows you to pop out babies with the amount being tied to the level of the Hutt. It also allows you to dress your creature in numerous outfit parts with their own stat enhancements. It is very important to fine tune your stats in the direction you want to take your people. This is also the first phase that you can place pre-fab buildings. these buildings provide tool and social upgrades. The combat is still limited with only a few special abilities. The goal of this phase like the last is to be top dog. Even on hard this is no challenge.
dont bother attacking the other villages...just wait and let them come to you...kill them...and then while their number are reduced...rush their village...rinse and repeat...I have no idea if death is a factor here...I didnt die.
Interesting cool moment during this phase...and I have no idea if this is random or scipted...but a spaceship appeared, flying around the planet observing and abducting creatures. There also was a giant that spawned and one-hit my creatures:eek:
Civ Phase
Standard RTS elements. The same goal as other phases...domination.
This phase allows you to design the buildings and vehicles. This is very satisfying. The option are numerous. The paint options are great and help to make a unique look for your City and its people.

You can design rediculous vehicles:arg:
http://i527.photobucket.com/albums/cc358/Jdknght24/SC_2.jpg
You can set up defensive turrets, which are not nerfed nor overpowered. This phase has a happy meter thats based off a balance of Entertainment, combat, and industry. this phase includes mining and its protection. The world zooms out to a beautiful view. When its dark on your side of the planet, you can scroll over to the other side and its daylight. Its a nice detail which I appreciate. The diplomatic option of the game in the form of gifts and such are actually helpful for once and stem the tide long enough to conquer the planet.
Space Phase
This is where I am at and its overwhelming, impressive and endless at first glance:eek:...thats all I gotta say about that.

SPORE is a game that should start at the Tribal Phase.
Thankfully once you unlock a phase, you can start from it in a new game.
Half of this game is addictive and fun. I love watching the game populate my planet diuring loading. One of my own creations was stealing food from me...I proceeded to exterminate them from the universe...
And omg, if I find the guy who made these relentless pain in the a$$ creature...I will kick him square in the nads.grr
Unfortunately this game was dumbed down for the massess...
Why are devs afraid of making challenging games.
I was never worried about anything...I left holes in my tactics just to see if the enemy a.i. would punish me for it...
I'm going to try a veggie diet and go diplomacy/dancing the next time thru...

I think this game is worth buying!:hero: I give it a 8/10

Yeah it was a great review, a few grammatical errors (only about 2) but it gave you an idea of how the game was, which is awesome =D2008-09-09 09:12:00

I have the same feeling of spore as you... "dumbed down for the masses" with little glimpses of what it could have been. The bit about the space ship happened to me to plus I almost ran into one of my own creations only its epic cousin(giant!!!). Congrats to EA for destroying what should have bee a great game. Good job on the review Im at the stage you are now just got my spaceship woot.2008-09-09 14:39:00

I pretty much agree with your review. To be honest though, i have found each stage to exceptionally hollow, with little depth. I found myself struggling, because i chose to be economic (well, the game did). And i really had no way of defending myself properly because i couldn't build anything to attack. Only a few turrets (which you can only build a few times on each spot). Maybe im just not very good, but you have no way of changing what kind of nation you are, unless take over a military city some how. And if they are all against you, it seems impossible.

However, creating your own vehicles and buildings is amazingly satisfying and is what will keep me playing more.

(I have just got to the space stage, and this seems alot more in depth. We will see though)

Oh and i agree, it has been dumbed down a massive amount. This game had so much going for it. Seems a wasted opitunity, its just a little too accessible for everyone.

Anyway, just my opinion.

I thought Spore was going to be a better looking game than it is. When your in create mode the graphics are top notch as shown in the pictures here. But in game the graphics are a little repetitive and not near as crisp and detailed. I still don't know if their is a way to import items you create into the actual game play other than it being a random pick of the computer before you start. When I got to the Civ phase I had to create my buildings and vehicles all over again because I started in create mode first. It's been fun but the replay value really isn't there for me. 2008-09-09 22:35:00

I'd call it average. The first half of the game is so...bleh. I really feel like I'm working.2008-09-10 02:48:00

Well to be honest i'm really enjoying it. I didn't go in expecting it to be a hardcore gamers dream, nor that fun reading many reviews by gamers. However i love it. Yeah, each stage is a bit too shallow but no worries. Cell phase is great fun. Creature stage is cool, but more activities would of been appreciated. Now i've never played games like the tribal and civ stage so i'm a complete noob to them. Infact at first i found both rather challenging. I'd say they're definatly the right difficulty for their target audience (like, everyone lol). (EDIT: but since i found every problem has a solution i was kept happy) I spent ages on both stages on my first playthrough. Unfortuanatly i had to repeat Civ stage, because my PC crashed when trying to automatically update while i was playing the game (retarted piece of beep). But i found it just as fun! Anywho i've just got back onto Space stage again (with this time an awesome UFO) and hopefully this'll be just as fun as the rest.

Oh and in terms of graphics - my laptop can't handle full. Only full textures and detail, just no lighting. But i still think the graphics are lovely (as this is the best it'll get on my laptop).
