Scandinavian Metal

Archive: 30 posts

Anyone here listen to Scandinavian metal? I love it, I think some of the best metal bands come from that area, but it's almost impossible to find the CDs I want to around here. So I figured I'd make a thread here to see if anyone listens to this stuff. (I figure I'll find at least one person, right?)

Just so we're clear, Scandinavia in an area comprised of Norway, Finland, and Sweden.

Well I'm pretty sure there a few scandinavians here anyway, and quite a few metalheads so you are probably onto a winner. In Flames are pretty much my favourite metal band, I was absolutely gutted When they cancelled their tour this year.

Not that knowledgeable on scandinavian metal though. In Flames and Dimmu Borgir are the only ones that spring to mind...

In Flames is a really cool band, yeah. My problem is that I'm just listening to all these epic bands online (internet radio for the win!) but I have trouble pronouncing some of their names. Norther is a really good band you should check out if you like In Flames.2009-07-31 17:04:00

I bought "The Gallery" the first day, and Punish My Heaven is one of my favourite songs ever (even if it ripped the intro from Dream Theater's Ytse Jam"), I loved The Mind's I and had some problem with Projector, but now they're back greater with the latest 2 albums!2009-07-31 19:06:00

Yeah, I have to say that Fiction is a really great album from them. I just wish I could find a store around here that sold this kind of music. Sometimes I'll get lucky at Best Buy (for example, they've got Amon Amarth's newest album) but it's still really hit-or-miss there.2009-07-31 19:21:00

I imagine that here in Europe is easier to find this stuff today, but I remember back in '94, it was a real pain in the @$$.
Amon Amarth latest one is really cool but I recommend you "With Oden On Our Side", the previous one, since I find it more "focused" on what they do better...anyway Tattered Banners is blasting furious.

It appears that you really enjoy Gotenburg sound.
(I quite hate Gotenburg today, since their losing soccer team avoided me to gain 400 ? with a bet )
Anyway I think that before jumping on the commercial side, most of those band were really better.

Have you ever heard of Dissection? I really suggest you to give a shot to "Storm Of The Light's Bane", one of my favourite album.

Basket, you're from Norway.
How's the feel of having "Greven" free in your street?

If I can find that album, I'll pick it up for sure (random question: isn't it spelled "Odin" not "Oden"?) but I really love some of the songs from Thunder God like The Hero.

Hah, I didn't know there was a whole scene for this kinda music, that's kinda cool... (Wikipedia told me about it) And it seems that lots of bands lose a bit of their style when they get signed, due to marketability and stuff. I follow a couple unsigned metal bands around here and they were talking about how hard it is to get signed these days because of what they play. Sometimes the "underground" scene is just better, especially when it comes to metal.

Dissection? No, not that I know of, unless you mean what I did to a frog in Biology class. (Joke, joke) I'll check them out sometime, for sure.

Yeah, that's Oden.

Most of the band had already signed their first contracts back in the early 90s, but in 96-97, there was a wave of Depeche Mode inspiration in metal that had the impact of a quake on many bands, then the money...

Anyway, don't check wiki, check www.metal-archives.com

So, I bought Twilight of the Thunder God, and I think it's a really good album. Guardians of Asgaard and The Hero are probably my favorite tracks, but they're all really good, I think. I looked for With Oden on our Side, but they didn't have it.

So, another band I wanted to throw out there was Satariel. They've only had two records, but from what I've heard they're both really amazing.

3 albums actually , but I never checked them out, even if I heard about them.
The first 2 albums will be very difficuklt to find, since Pulverised record is from Singapore or Hong Kong and it has a really bad import channel.

I'll suggest you 3 bands, that I really like a lot, Finntroll (Jaktens Tid) and Amorphis (Skyforger), both Finnish, and Eluveitie (Spirit), from Switzerland

I really like In Flames. The other day, I saw a guy wearing a shirt of theirs, which was kind of cool.

And I knew it was only a matter of time before Bodom was brought up. I think they're pretty cool, and yeah they're Finnish.

They are pretty cool, yeah.

So, anyway, how about that Nightwish? I'm still trying to figure out if they're metal or just awesome, honestly. Either way, they're cool.

Good guys always listen black metal m/_
And I was really surprised to read some black metal song in Brutal Legend's soundtrack.
Some really KVLT stuff like Loke and Thus Spake The Nightspirit, plus the omnipresent Progenies Of The Great Apocalypse.

Man, I can't wait for Brutal Legend. I thought it was going to be more American 80s metal and stuff, but I guess not.2009-08-12 16:53:00

Some serious stuff there, even if they miss some bands that has written metal history, like Metallica and Maiden (obviously), but even Helloween/Gamma Ray, Blind Guardian, Death, Cannibal Corpse, Dream Theater, Queensryche...it's a pity that those band were scratched out while some bands have up to 5 songs (even if they are the Metal Gods...)2009-08-12 18:15:00
