Robot Walker

Basically, this is going to be two spinning wheels with "legs" attached with free bolts on opposite ends with a lever in the center. The wheels would cause the legs to move forwards/backwards, thus moving you from A to B.

Nice idea. In its current state it won't walk like the picture you have drawn though. I think if you added another set of 'legs' to the back (in depth that is), then it should work alot better.2008-09-09 13:17:00

My brother had that same idea for the legs.

What you would actually need to do is something like this:

http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/1802/machinees8.png

The reason is because in the original model, once it was animated all that would happen is the back and the front would take turns raising up and down. So as the back leg is as far down as it can go and the front leg is raised as high as it can go, the back end would be sticking up in the air and the front end would be low to the ground. Then as it switches and the back leg raises and the front leg extends downwards, the back end would lower down to the ground and the front end would then rise. As it was making these motions, the machine wouldn't move forward or backwards at all, it would just look like a giant mechanical bull.

To make it move, you need both modifications I made. The first modification is adding the stationary legs that are shorter than the rotating legs. The second is making both rotating legs reach their peak at the same time, then spinning around and reaching their lowest point at the same time. As both the rotating legs reach their highest point on the circle, the machine will stand on its middle legs, then as they spun back around and touched the ground, the entire machine would rise a little and the middle would move towards the right (if the circles are rotating clockwise to move forward) until the rotating legs lifted off the ground again and the entire machine would once again be standing on its middle legs. While this happens over and over again, the machine will move to the right. To make it move backwards (or towards the left) all you would need to do is make the wheels spin counter-clockwise.

And just to give you a mental picture, the reason both of my adjustments need to be made and not just one, I will explain why. If you just made it so both the rotating legs where at the top and the bottom at the same time, but left out the middle legs, then the machine would do pretty much what it did before, except this time the front end and back end would both raise and lower at the same time. Your need the middle legs to stablize it so it can then take one step after another.

Also, if you just added the middle legs and didn't change the position the rotating legs are at on the wheel, the entire machine would just wobble back and forth without really moving. While the back leg was extended, the middle legs would make it lean to the right, and while the front leg is extended it would just lean to the left.

Sorry for this huge explanation... I don't know why its impossible for me to just make a short post. Just wanted to show you all how to make a robot that would be able to walk. If you took these basic mechanics you could design some really cool walking robots, maybe for regular bad guys or for bosses. Or, obviously, you can make a pretty awesome vehicle for your sack-boy to cruise around in. The faster the wheels rotate, the faster it will be able to walk.

Sounds like a cool idea for a quad-walker; reminds me of a turtle.
Be sure to put lotsa' guns on it!
