Awesomemans Reviews: Full Throttle(The Illusion) by Mango-Pie

Archive: 1 post

Full Throttle is a series of levels created by the deliciously named Mango-Pie. It's one of those levels that are made just so creators can experiment with the items acquired in the MGS pack. Now, there's nothing wrong with these levels, but I can't help to feel like I've seen a lot of it before. Is Full Throttle(The Illusion) just another clone, or does it stand out among the crowd?

The Illusion has a story, but it doesn't really make any sense because, from what I remember, there's no back story. You're pretty much told "Hey, go in the car and drive." and then you drive off a cliff and then you get kidnapped and then you have hallucinations. As far as I know, Eric, the protagonist here, is the bad guy. He sees a guy sleeping and then continues to choke him and steal his paintball gun. Later in the level you break out of captivity (you were probably put in prison for killing that guy. Apparently Eric forgot murder is illegal.) and then you get to choke more people, blow up doors, trip on hallucinogens, and just be an all around ****. And then he retires.

As far as looks go, The Illusion is very pretty. There are enough details and all the materials match. It does little to differentiate its look from from various other futuristic MGS pack levels, but that isn't much of a complaint. It's just incredibly detailed. The jump you go down has an actual ladder. The fence isn't perfect and straight. It's a little mangled. The Illusion might not do much different from the other MGS pack levels in terms of visual style, but it is certainly more refined than others.

The Illusion is an alright level. It looks like just another MGS level, but it plays a lot differently. There's some decent platforming utilizing wall jumping thrown in with a puzzle or two and some blowing **** up, and even the paintinator sections aren't half bad. Plus, you get to choke people to death! It plays differently from other MGS pack levels in that it focuses more on platforming than Paintinator. A lot of MGS levels make the mistake of making us blast away at the same boring turrets for a couple minutes before reaching the scoreboard.

The Illusion's original ideas are what differentiates it from other levels. Whatever evil corporation that is drugged you, and that affects the level a lot. What looks like a normal room at first magically changes into a room much more treacherous. You also use your new powers to slow down time, however this particular effect is only used once. The way the level will have you "pass out" and cut to another scene makes it much more atmospheric than other MGS levels, even if the two times it happens are way too close together.

Overall, Full Throttle(The Illusion) is to MGS pack levels as Call of Duty 4 is to first person shooters. It doesn't completely redefine anything, but it has enough good ideas, has enough polish, and executes everything well enough to stand out. The one coolest feature is only used once at the end, but that is just what happens when you plan on making a series. Some of the levels at the beginning hint at awesome talent and great ideas, but they feel empty and short, and it's not until the middle of the series we begin seeing some insane stuff.
