Revenge Explored Part 1: The DeceptionShredder25
A first in a planned series, in which you are called to Africa to investigate some recently discovered ruins. I've tried to cover several environments through the level, as well as out-of-the-ordinary obstacles. I'm not sure how well I've pulled it off though, that's for you to decide!
all
This is my first attempt at an action/story level, as most of my other levels have been music levels. However, I've gotten only poor results so far without comments, so I have no idea what's wrong with it. My stars are also broken (no layer glitch involved), and I'm not sure why. I'm not sure anymore whether I wish to continue the series, or restart with more foundation for a deeper storyline.

Anyway, post your levels for me to play!

Nice level, but I noticed several small problems with it.

-You chose a background, but you hardly see it, so when your underground, you hear the ambient of a jungle. Either remove the blue painted sky on cardboard in the beginning, or use a blank background.

-It doesn't seem like you added any sound effects, which can a great deal of realism to your level. I'd like to hear music, and wind howling through the ruins. The car and plane didn't really make any noise either. The text of the speech bubbles didn't really have any noise too.

-The beginning puzzle was fine, but it was kind of annoying. First of all, I wasn't really sure what to do, I thought I was supposed to put the pillars on the pads, but one didn't seem to move, I figured out that there were weights in the pillars that you could move. So I would put 2 weights in each pillar. but when one pillar hit a pad, the other went up. Also, were there supposed to be points holding the weights at place? The points are out of the way and unsuspecting. I solved this puzzle by putting one pillar on a pad, and weights on the other pad.
(When I first tried solving the puzzle, I did something to solve the puzzle, but I got crushed somehow, and when I was at the checkpoint, I couldn't get by the pillar, it was to heavy, so you may want to make a way around the pillar to get to the jet pack.)

-The layers, were too bumpy and steep, it was hard to maneuver through the mines. And the cart at the beginning was very hard to move.

-The ending was a bit too quick, I ran all the way across the bridge, but a invisible boundary blocked my way. You may want to make the bridge longer, and add a camera that points to the guy with the cannon. You should give the player a feeling that they could have made it passed the bridge. But the invisible boundary made it all very scripted feeling, try to make it seem dynamic.

I rated the level 4 stars. No tag.

Great, thanks for the review! Lots of good points, I'll definitely be working on implementing them. I kept thinking I needed to add some kind of music, I'll rework my sounds for it in a minute.

The puzzle was originally put on two planes, but I had to switch it to one for room to make the door look better. Looks like I have a few problems to work out there. Perhaps some visible lock which moves, so you can see whether what you're doing is unlocking the door or not.

Anyway, thanks again! I'll be working on the things you pointed out.

First of all, the reason why your level isn't receiving much comments is simply because there isn't many people that played it. Republish it often and you'll get more plays, feedback and hearts.

I played your level tonight and it's not bad at all! I like to do things i'm not supposed to when I play other people's level and I didn't take the truck at the beginning.

I also ignored the carts (until the jump part of course) but it was fun to play dumb and not really follow the "intended path".

First thing that did really catch my attention though is your rock falling, respawning platform. What interests me in LBP levels is to see new gameplays and tricks i've never seen before and there you are: I never saw the combination of "rock falling trap" and "destroyable platform trap.

Your God rays are well done and the little trick to open the door right after was welcomed. Something wierd happened to me though. After the lift part, you reach a bridge and there's a cannon blowing it up. I feel BEHIND the rock wall and there was a leaderboard right there! the hell is this? lol

Now it's a bit late outta here. I'm gonna replay your level tomorrow and try to finish it by its real ending.

It just annoys me that someone would put a poor tag on it, likely because they're having trouble, then not tell me what trouble they were having .

I've been busy with a few other projects lately, and it seems since I stopped working on this one a lot of things have broken. Goody.

I tried to be original with my obstacles, so that even if they're not terribly entertaining to wade through they're at least interesting. That one was pretty fun to put together, so I'm glad you liked it.

I think you may be talking about the real ending, which also seems to be working incorrectly... again. Either way, that part definitely needs work. I'll need to rework it when I get a minute.

Ah, looks like at least two people will be playing it tomorrow. Oh well, looks like I get to polish it up and get it presentable again. Darn random everything breaking .

I'll see if I can play through your series tonight, then I'll tell you what I think .

Edit: Done fixing that darn thing, hopefully it will stay fixed this time... I've also improved the ending, which was needed, so at least you won't be as disappointed this time. It's amazing the random things that can go wrong when you're fixing a level (for example, a big rock falling from the sky, smashing one of the logic vehicles...). Anyway, it should be good to go now.

I just played it. and I really like it!

the first thing I noticed (aside from the airplane with the heli sound effect that gave me a good giggle, so don't change it!) was the great craft that you gave to the trees. And the blue back-drop really seems to work!

I like how the mine carts arn't just a "gimme" You actually have to pull it up the hill and then hop in.

my only critisizm is that down in the mines, I would have like to see more light. now I know the plot says no more light sorces, but I think you could take a little licence. maybe some ambitious explorer Brought a torch in, you never know. or just tweak the global settings a little. you have some really nice scenes there, and it's a shame to cover them up with all that gloom.

I gave it a 4 (almost perfect) and hearted it so I can track it as it is tweaked.

if lyou get a chance, I'd like you to let me know what you think of my level "My happy Place"

I put the minecart there in something of a "If the player thinks to and is willing to grab it, it will get them past a few of the traps easily". I don't think anyone doesn't grab it though (except rangerzero, that rebel).

I'd like to put some lights in the mines, but I haven't been sure how to do it. In a few places I put light streaming through as though there was a hole in the ceiling, but dropped torches from past explorers seams a pretty feasible idea too.

Thanks for the play, I'm glad you liked it! I'll drop by your Happy Place and try it out soon.

So I played it again tonight. I didn't know I was THAT near of the end. It's basically like you simply moved it to the right or something.
Anyhow, still like the level. The main problem with me aside being a tad short is that many things don't feel as tight as it could. Sudden layer changes, scenery good but doesn't feel solid. I don't know why I was surprised by the ending arriving so soon. Maybe there's a secret ending I'm missing? Is there a way to not fall with the bridge?

Oh yeah and you where the floor crumbles right before bubbles? I jumped on the bubbles' side. I wish I could have grabbed the bubbles though :/

Anyhow, this was a solid attempt. Despise its flaws there was some really interesting gameplay mechanics in there and the story didn't annoy me (it's easy to do this to me). It's totally worth playing, maybe not great. Its convincing enough for me to play your next productions though. I'm sure you have some good steam in you.

Yeah, it did turn out shorter than I'd have liked. I knew a little less about level creation then, so I should be able to stretch the thermometer quite a bit further next time.

Making it across the bridge is possible, (though blocked, since I'm having trouble making it fall faster) but it wouldn't make much sense in the story were you to make it. What would you do if you made it, hop over and kill them both? It's a little cruel for sackboy, and I was aiming for more of an ambush type scenario, but it hasn't worked as well as I'd have liked it to.

It will be a while before (if) I continue this series though. I'm actually working on my level like yours, working title 'Out to Sea'. I'll probably wait until the History pack to really get serious about it though, so I'm not sure what I'll have to work on for the next little while.

Anyway, thanks for playing!

I played this last night and really enjoyed it. The one issue I had was at the very beginning.... I jumped out of the plane and got squished in a tree.

I was a BIT disappointed I could see that huge clump of point bubbles and they were blocked off.... I died falling down to the bottom of the cave and respawned back up at the top (I missed hitting the checkpoint falling down) - so I then jumped over to the points to try to get them.... doh!

But this was a nice adventure. I enjoyed the little surprises encountered on the way and the puzzle elements. I'm looking forward to the next part.

I gave it 4 stars and a heart. Nice job!

Darn it . I've edited that tree so many times to keep it from smashing people, but still it persists... If you look at it it's shaped differently than the other trees like it, but I guess that wasn't enough.

The bricks in the collapsing part smash me from time to time, but I can't think of a good way to make that part safer. Any ideas?

Hmmm.... what most people do is use really light material and sticker it to LOOK heavy. So, poly or cardboard. As for the tree, try changing it to cardboard and make sure there are no thin crevaces in it, then change it back into sponge. I THINK there may be more than 1 tree there you can fall on - I may have pulled to the right a bit during the fall.2009-08-08 19:48:00

I'll try it if I can manage some decent looking stickers, thanks!

Good idea changing it to something besides sponge as well, I'll definitely try it.

For the rocks, just put a big piece of the material you use now on the screen and take a picture of it, then put it on the light material. Should look pretty close to the same.2009-08-08 21:49:00
