There's Spaceship Earth, Tower of Terror, and the Earful tower in the first picture...

... Disney World related somehow...?

But...

... is this a joke? This must be a joke. O_o

Hmm, that's interesting. Is that the only info they have on this game at the moment? Or do they have any more info that's worded?2009-07-29 20:36:00

I was just going to come post this after I saw it on 1up. The concept art looks amazing... if anyone can make a great game using this kind of theme, it's a Deus Ex mastermind. The whole idea of a post apocalyptic theme park, with remnants of the past still functioning is intriguing.

People are saying there's no way Disney will go with this art direction on Wii, but then again they did produce stuff like Return To Oz.

Here is some more info:

Evidence has emerged that Warren Spector's Junction Point Studios is working on a game codenamed "Epic Mickey" for the Wii, offering a dark, steampunk-style take on Mickey Mouse and the Magic Kingdom.

Most of the evidence comes from the rumour-hunter's faithful friend - concept artists' websites - and appears to corroborate a Gamasutra report from late last year that first identified the "Epic Mickey" codename.

Tireless digger Superannuation has turned up the website of concept artist Tony Pulham, whose resum? reveals he recently joined Junction Point to work on "Epic Mickey", and identifies it as a Wii game.

Another Superannuation post unearthed some beautiful concepts for "Epic Mickey" on the website of artist Fred Gambino. Pictures show the Mickey Mouse ears adorning a gigantic, crumbling paddle-steamer, the spires of the Magic Kingdom castle perched atop a twisted tower of rock, and a semi-mechanical "Zombie Goofey" [sic].

Meanwhile, a poster on the NeoGAF forum has found what appear to be the same concepts described in the original Gamasutra report, showing more distorted, nightmarish, mechanical versions of classic Disney characters, including the Seven Dwarves. They come from the artist Gary Glover's site.

Disney Interactive Studios bought Junction Point - which Deus Ex mastermind Spector formed with several other Ion Storm alumni - two years ago. Not long after, it was rumoured - notably in American gaming magazine EGM - that Spector was working on a Mickey Mouse platform game intended to rival Mario.

Last year, Spector said that he was "tired of making games about guys in black leather carrying guns" and that "100-hour games are on the way out". He also revealed that Disney Feature Animation and Pixar were collaborating on Junction Point's game.

And there's more. In an archived Edge interview from E3 2006 - before the Disney acquisition - Spector said: "I want to do a cartoon game really bad - well, really good. People don't realise that I did my Masters thesis on Warner Brothers cartoons, you know - I used to teach animation classes, I've been a Disney stockholder since I was 19. I'm a cartoon freak, I've met a bunch of the old WB directors, and did Toon, the cartoon [pen-and-paper] RPG? And I've been trying to get somebody to let me do a cartoon game for the entire time I've been in the videogame business."

In that same interview, Spector even alluded to a project that sounds an awful lot like "Epic Mickey". "I did some concept work on a license with a media company that was very cartoony, and boy, we did some great work," he said. "It was the most fun I've had in a long time, maybe since Deus Ex. The work was phenomenal, and I'll never be able to show it or talk about it with anybody. But hopefully the project will happen. We were gonna let people live in a cartoon world, and it was going to be wacky."

A friend of Eurogamer also once spotted Warren Spector wearing a Mickey Mouse backpack and hoodie in public. True story.

Here's hoping Spector's paymasters at Disney allow him to realise some of the extraordinary vision hinted at by those concept images, because it's mouth-watering stuff. And a long way from the Castle of Illusion...

Kingdom Hearts 3?

Nah, too adult.

This is definitely a project I'd put into action. I mean, the concepts here are phenomenal, and can really help Disney in the videogame district. Just imagine all of the macrabe references to old films like Lion King and the Nightmare Before Christmas... oi, I'm already startin' to shake. I hope I see something like this in the future; definitely would buy.

(On Wii? I can't really imagine something like this on Wii, tbh.)

I dont think its a Wii game.Wii's graphic arent that dynamic like the concepts.Nintendo also focuses on younger audiences.

Disney usually releases Mickey games to the PS2,like Kingdom Hearts.Possibly a PS3 is being made, too.Especially with the price cut helping PS3 sells.

XBox360 is the grittier console. It might also appear on the XBox360 because of sells and the fact that mainly all of XBox360 owners buy rated T-M games.Mainly rated M.

I personally think this game will do fine on the Wii. With all kinds of survival horror games on the Wii (Silent Hill, FF4, Winter) I think it could do well. There are tons of devs out there trying to make bring a more hardcore audience to the Wii.

In the latest Gameinformer (Crackdown 2) there's an ad inside for the new format they're getting. On what looks like to be a cover page there's somewhat of a silhouette of mickey in this black gel-ish stuff. I'm assuming that's for the next issue, so we'll have more info on this soon!

And didn't disney buy marvel recently? Maybe that has something to do with it.

If they make this on the Wii, I hope to God it's not an exclusive...

It's about time someone warped the Disney universe beyond all recognition and let us run wild through it

It looks to me like the world of Disney finally decided to merge with the real world... but hit Fallout instead.

I remember seeing this a little while back, and while the artwork is absolutely amazing, I never really thought much would come of it.

I still can't imagine this actually happening. It also doesn't really sound at all like the game being described by Spector... he's describing something "wacky and cartoony" in the style of old WB and Disney cartoons. This game appears to be a dark, death-filled steampunk nightmare world, like David Lynch does Disney. Not at all "wacky" and "cartoony". So I have to question if this is actually the game he's talking about.

I also have a hard time imagining Disney approving this sort of thing. At the VERY least, expect an "Epic Mickey" game to exclude a lot of the darkness seen in these concepts. It's just too dark for Disney! I mean, even us on this board are kind of twisted up inside a bit at the imagery. This is our nostalgia, our warm happy childhood memories, twisted into a dark and ominous nightmare. That's kind of freaky, and while I think it's genius, I can't imagine Disney going for it.

I didn't realize so many people didn't have Wii. It's just a Wii, it's not the plague. It won't give you swine flu.

I sort of assumed more people just had one. Particularly people on a LBP board, who would be likely platformer fans, and seeing as Wii's home to Mario Galaxy... but I digress.

Looking forward to getting some details on this, as right now I'm having trouble wrapping my head around exactly what this is going to be. Like with a lot of people, I'm sort of picturing American McGee's Alice in my head, even down to the gameplay level.

I love my Wii, I havent played it in a while since the pile of interesting games is quite small but still....I love my Wii and I love Nintendo.

The problem I could have with this new development is the visual side of it all, this could be such a cool visual treat but we are used to so much more by now then what the Wii can handle.

Let's hope the artistry is so good it makes you forget its not HD nor "next-gen" like Mario Galaxy did for example.

I saw the paintbrush in the concept art so I can only Imagine you use that tool to restore world by world to its former glory or something like that.
Let us just wait and see how much of the artwork is translated to game in the end because marketing it solely towards the Wii does have its cons concerning the targeted age group.

Well, it's not the plague, you're right, the plague is the 360
In my case I have barely 2 hours a day to play, so there's no sense in picking up more than one console, even though I could afford it, so I choose the most reliable brand with the broader spectre of good games.

The only games I'm interested for the Wii are MadWorld and Monster Hunter (Epic Mickey maybe), I think that Ratchet&Clank Future is better than Mario, and between Mario and Sonic I would pick Sonic everyday.
360 for me has "only" Gears and Mass Effect...

You have a good point, Epic Mickey could really be good, but it won't sell the Wii to me, I bought the Gamecube for RE4 and was disappointed by Nintendo...I always had bought Sega consoles and was never disappointed.

I got quite sad seeing how low good stuff not Fit-related for the Wii had sold:
MadWorld, the same Monster Hunter 3, The Conduit...good sales don't mean that a game is good and viceversa, but that many people didn't bought the game since the devs bet on the wrong user base.

So...finally...IMHO a game ambitious and mature like Epic Mickey is not FIT for the WII.

While that's true on the whole, some more non-shooter games are slowly leaking out now, and there is still a hidden gem here and there for the platformer fan, not to mention the old games being released on Xbox Live.

I think my main concern is that the Wii won't be able to deliver graphically. That won't make or break the game, sure, but doesn't everyone want their game to look better?
