Lucid Dreams, Sleep Paralysis, and the Like

Archive: 43 posts

Anyone ever had either of those happen to them? Lucid dreams are pretty cool. If you've never heard of them, here's a link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucid_dream). Sleep Paralysis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_paralysis), on the other hand can be very scary. To my understanding, it's when you come out of REM sleep (in which your brain paralyzes you so you don't act out your dreams) but you don't get un-paralyzed. So, you can't move. It's really freaky, and it gets accompanied by all sorts of spooky hallucinations, too. I had'em both today so I decided to make a thread. I was dreamin' along when I got Sleep Paralysis, which shocked me into a Lucid Dream. I just dreamed of my hotel room though. I should've taken advantage of it... I actually watched TV in my dream, which was pretty weird.2009-07-29 09:58:00

I had a lucid dream with some killer in some rooms. Pretty neat-o. I could do lots of stuffs.

My dad said he's had an out of body experience. I want to have one so I can fly into space.

I didn't know lucid dreams were special. Pretty much all my dreams are like that. Great fun if you have the same dream multiple times and you see what happens if you do something else.
False awakening is annoying though, especially if you wake up for real shortly afterwards. So confusing.

Oh i like lucid drams, i used to have them qute fequently, but not anymore.

I've been told that a way to start a lucid dream if by turning on/of the ligh, or looking at a digital watch. (in the dream of course.)

Apparently since there's no reall perception of time or light and darkness in a dream, turning on/ off a light or looking at the digital watch will sap your mind out of the "eveerything makes sense" stat and make it realize its a dream, thus the lucid dream starts. (Tho its a lot difficult than it sounds to do.)

Bever had sleep paralisys tho, i've heard others talk about it, but hasn't happened to me.
Sounds creepy tho... :/
I think when its called "Se le subio el muerto" in castellano. (Spanish from Mexico, which isn't the same as the Spainsh from Spain.)
Means something like: The dead's rising" whch makes it sound even creepier.
Hope it doesn't happen to me tho. (Paralisys)

Tho they do say Irregular sleeping schedules, and sudden environmental/lifestyle changes can cause it.

Andi have been sleeping pretty late lately (3:00am - 6:00am i'll be moving out in a couple of days.
(Yet again, tho we do move quite frequently so i' mquite used to it, and makes it easier to adapt to new places.

Well, lets just hope i don't get sleep paralisys and that i'm able to get more lucid dreams.
(Pretty awesome when you realize you can do mostly anything and are actually able to do so.)

I've never had either happen to me, but I think my mum has had the sleep paralysis a few times. She's told me about times when she's woken up but can't move, and then she sees all kinds of crazy stuff going on and it really freaks her out. Sound about right? I think I'm going to be looking into these lucid dreams, though. They sound really cool and if there's some way to force yourself into one, that'd be really sweet.2009-07-29 16:55:00

I've never suffered from that exactly, but do suffer massively from Night Terrors (waking up screaming, fighting in my sleep) that are accompanied by horrible dreams. I also sleep walk quite regularly. I go down stairs and make food, wander around the room etc. The last time it happened was last week, I was wandering around the room, with two mugs in my hand complaining about the 2 for 1 deals at the local supermarket!!! When I first met my now wife, I was in her wardrobe rooting through her clothes, when she asked what I was doing I told her I was catching the chickens!!! It used to completely freak her out, but now she's used to it she goes back to sleep. We have to make sure the keys and things are out of the doors because I have been known to try and get outside and go for a wander.

I always remember nothing about it the next day, its strange when people tell you about it.

I used to have lucid dreams quite a lot when I was younger. Not anymore now though. They were pretty cool, and I know there's ways to force yourself into lucid dreaming, but I think I'd be just too lazy with keeping up with the methods though.

Sleep paralysis, I can't recall having. Sounds freaky though.

Haven't had a lucid dream. My brother did, and he was terrified.

EDIT: I remember getting sleep paralysis when I was 6 or so. Missed eatin' pancakes.

What I hate is how you can feel pain in dreams, even lucid. Not a very lovely thing to experience.

Sleep paralysis happens to me all the time, it's horrible.

I remember I had a pretty funny lucid dream once... I was having a great, pretty out there dream, but I had to keep stopping and going to the bathroom in the dream and thinking to myself "agh, why won't it stop" and suddenly realized "oh yeah... I'm dreaming" and woke myself up to go to the bathroom.

I got sleep paralysis plenty of times... it sucks. It takes like every ounce of will to force yourself to move, and you have to like swing your body with all your might just to roll over. Woke up face first in a pillow like that once... that was terrible.

I can't help but laugh at the times when you're super tired and stressed, and right when you're starting to fall asleep... you imagine yourself tripping and falling and like jerk your whole body to catch your fall and wake yourself up.

I often have dreams that start out with me doing what I meant to do before I dozed off... ie: getting up and turning off the light before I fall asleep. It's always pretty amusing to me.

lol @ Gruntos... my room on the 2nd floor has a door that should lead to a porch, but leads to nothing but thin air - almost like a cartoon. It's great because I can sleep with door wide open for constant fresh air, like a huge window, but I always think how terrible it would be if I ever sleep walked out the door and did some Wyle E Coyote-style double take in mid air.

So, anyway, on the subject of sleepwalking, I have something of a funny story. When I was really young (I wanna say about 7? I don't know for sure...) I had a really strange dream that I was standing on the bow of a boat that was speeding around this lake at insane speeds (you guys should know my dreams never, ever make sense). Suddenly, the boat starts heading straight for the shore. I think to myself "I better get off this boat!" so, I jump off. My logic wasn't very sound back then, I know. Anyway, the next thing I know, I'm awake, bouncing on my stomach on my bed. Weirdest thing ever. I must've been standing on my bed like I was on the boat and then jumped. So much for the brain paralyzing the body, right?

Sleep paralysis is terrifying if you don't know what's happening. Some people also report of hearing screaming, which is obviously in their head, but it's also got another name because of it.. Something to do with banshee's.

I've been trying to have an OoBE for ages. If you really look into all the details about it, there's a lot of information, and it's all really quite interesting..

There's also a theory / explanation on why that happens.. It's all relevant to how far you're ready to believe, without any help from science though..

And on the topic of sleepwalking.. If I saw someone sleepwalking, I'd be terrified haha.

That could well be the start of a lucid dream, or an OoBE haha

Do you ever feel.. vibrations? before you sleep (as you're drifting off) or while in a dream?

I've never managed to have a lucid dream. The furthest I've gotten is realising I'm in a dream and then thinking to myself "Hey I'm in a dream! I can do whatever I want! I'm going to punch this guy right now and see what happens." Problem is I'm only thinking that in the dream and not actually doing it.

I have something that is fairly frequent in my dreams where I see people I know in my dreams. Friends, family, co-workers etc. Only thing is they don't look, sound or act like the person they are. It's essentially an entirely different person but for some reason I know it's that person. I've always wondered if there's some sort of reson for that.

I also occasionally have dreams where I go to work. It's horrible because you wake up and feel like you've already just been working and then you have to go to work again. ****it I just did this commute!

Had a funny one this morning. I was dreaming that I was waking up but decided to turn around once more and fell asleep again, than I woke up for real and did the exactly what I just dreamed.

I can see the future!

I think I had a lucid dream last night... That, or I dreamed I had one... Anyway, so I was in this house (it was a really nice house, too, but I've never been there) which I think was floating in space for some reason. Then I think someone came floating down from space and I thought "You're not supposed to be here! This must be a dream!" or some such. So I did this trick I read about where you look at yourself in a mirror, turn away, and then look at the mirror again. First time I looked, I looked normal. Second time I looked my face was all distorted and whatnot. This made me think something to the effect of "This is definitely a dream!" and I think I proceeded to do some stuff with my knowledge. The problem is I can't remember for sure what happened after the mirror thing, and all the dreams I had last night have kinda run together. Also, I'm not entirely sure that once I realized I was dreaming I did anything about it, thus me thinking I just dreamed I was in a lucid dream...

So, that's my story. If it was a lucid dream, it'd be my first.

When you're in a dream (if you can remember this of course) try pinching yourself and you'll find that it feels like you have pins and needles.

Always fun to be in control of your dreams and in a nightmare it can be a life saver; once I was in a room of moths (****ed moths!) then just made the room tear itself apart and made all the moths catch alight. I find it's always to make things as flamboyant as possible in a dream, enjoy them while they last

Was reading through this and realized I'm among the minority in that I have roughly two lucid dreams a week. Been reading up on them and I'm going to try to force myself into one this evening now that I have a few ideas that should better help get me there.

Also read that one of the best ways to get into a lucid state is by waking up for a bit after about five or six hours sleep and then going back to sleep. Done this a number of times with an extremely high success rate and the dreams I've had have been by far the most vivid I've ever experienced. So vivid/disturbing in fact that I refuse to go back to sleep once I wake up in the morning...

I have lucid dreams every so often. They're great fun!

I think I'll pass on recounting them though...

I used to have an alarm set, and then a second alarm set about 10 minutes later. I found myself having much more vivid dreams in this short period of time, which I could clearly remember for a short time afterwards. I'm not sure if this helped me get lucid dreams, but it's still pretty cool - not sure if it works for everyone, but give it a try

Sleep paralysis sounds scary...
Funny story - I was once sleeping over with a bunch of cousins, and at some point in the middle of the night, one of my cousins suddenly starting talking about another of my cousins in his sleep, saying that he was from another universe... It was quite hilarious!
He had no recollection of it when we asked the next day.

ugh you people have no idea how lucky you are...

I never remember any dream I've had.

Not since I was 4 or 5 years old. Its terrible, I have this crazy imagination and I cant enjoy any of my dreams that I have. When I wake up in the morning I dont even remember dreaming, or have any little sliver of a sense that I did dream. I get told all the time that you dream every night. But I'm starting to wonder if I do dream.

Maybe theres something wrong with me. I remember about 3 dreams in my life and all but one of them I still remember clearly, and that one I think might have been during sleep paralysis.

Another thing curious about me, sometimes right before I drift off to sleep I imagine that something is flying towards my face really quickly, wether its a pillow or a face, it always wakes me up completely and scares the crap outta me.

I dont know whats wrong with me, I dont remember any dreams I have, I feel like I need help.

I think most people don't remember dreams much. It just depends on how you sleep mostly. Nothing wrong with you if you don't remember them! It probably means you're getting a better sleep

If you want to try remembering them, give what I said a try. Set two alarms about 10 minutes apart and fall back asleep after the first one. I don't know for sure if it'll work so don't worry if it doesn't, but hey it's worth a try if you really want!

But yea I'm pretty sure that if you don't dream much it simply means you're getting a deeper sleep.

Also, I think most people have some sort of dreamy thing every once in a while when they're falling alseep. For me every once in a while as I'm just falling asleep I have a dreamy thing where I feel like I fall through the floor to the basement, then I wake up and eventually just go back to sleep.

Well my bed is Kingsdown so maybe I am sleeping very deeply! xD

The only dream I remember perfectly is when I was around 6 years old I guess. I was really into the rug rats, a kids tv show. And my dad printed out a picture of tommy pickles off the internet. I wanted it on my wall in front of my bed, and I guess I fell asleep.

Next thing I knew i was looking at the picture again and tommies eyes started to decay, then parts of his skin peeled off and his jaw fell off. His whole face started to decay incredibly realistically. I havent seen gore so lifelike before or since that dream. and it was lifelike on a cartoon! creepy as hell i know.

The worst part was I couldnt move or look away that whole time. Eventually I flung myself out of bed and screamed. my dad came in as i found conciousness, I really was on the floor. I ordered my dad to throw out the picture. I wouldnt even go near the trash can for 3 days.

You sure Evil Dead wasn't playing on the television in the background as you drifted off?

Yeah, I hate that. I also hate being chased in dreams; my legs never seem to work. Although there was this one dream where I was being chased and I was running so fast my legs weren't even touching the ground. Another time I dreamed that I fell down a cliff, but instead of falling to my death, I ran down the cliff face all the way to this lake at the bottom. By the time I reached the lake, I was going so fast I ran across the water all the way safely to the shore.

I had a phase earlier this year where i'd be really tired and the second i closed my eyes in bed i'd feel wide awake, and when i stood up out of bed i'd be in a lucid dream

If i woke up from the lucid dream i'd just keep my eyes closed for about 10 seconds and i'd jump straight back in!

I've always had problems controlling lucid dreams so i sort of hatched a plan during this phase.
Since i couldn't do anything that i couldn't do in real life i decided to go to places that i hadn't been too in real life knowing that my imagination would have to create something to be there.

So in each lucid dream i walked out into the street and started walking into houses that i'd never been to before and found all sorts of random stuff
One house was really dull but one of the closets turned out to be a huge warehouse full of cuddly toys, and another had this weird greek theme with a swimming pool in the living room.

Was really fun anyway!

I posted about my experiences on this lucid dreaming forum and they were all really jealous that i could go lucid just from closing my eyes for a few seconds!
Unfortunately though it only lasted for about a week

When I do WILD (Wake initiated lucid dream) I go through sleep paralysis and hypnagogic imagery each time I want to lucid dream. I prefer this technique because even before you are lucid dreaming you are experiencing something strange. I have been doing this for a while actually.

My favourite thing to do while lucid dreaming is flying. I have always been fascinated with it. Also, when I can sense I'm about to leave the dream I put myself thousands of metres into the air and then jump off. The feeling of fear and excitement are insane and become almost painful. I love it 8D. Apparently that feeling happens because your brain is afraid your body is dying and so sends out signals that feel like pain / falling.

I can't remember a dream I had in recent memory that wasn't lucid. I can control what I do in most of my dreams, and strangely enough, I can always move things just by thinking about it (it's where I got inspiration for my character in "The Tournament" thread). The amount of weight I can lift varies from dream to dream, but it gets pretty crazy sometimes. I've never had Sleep Paralysis though, I guess I'm a lucky one. 2009-08-07 13:07:00

I've actually been having a bit of trouble recalling my dreams the past few nights, ever since I had what I think was my first lucid dream. All I can really remember of late is just very small disjointed bits, if anything at all. It's weird because I normally have great dream recall. Makes me sad.2009-08-07 17:19:00

SP is either kind of fun or the scariest experience ever xD

Once i got it out of nowhere. I was completly frozen and i heard the CREEPIEST music ever along with this weird dull buzzing sound that slowly got louder and louder. I wish i could still remember the music because i'd never heard anything like it!
It took me about 2 hours to realise it was just SP xD
That was one of my scariest experiences

Other times though i'm just having a laugh with it and waiting until i can move again

A few times i went into SP straight from being awake, that was kind of cool ^^

Sleep Paralysis -
It feels like someones sucking your whole body to another dimension.

And lol at the dream stumble. Happens to me like once every 2 years.
---------
Anyways if your having sleep paralysis, this is what I do. You roll your eyes sidewards and move your toes back and forth.

I can guarantee you it works. I get these kind of things alot during summer because i'm always up all late and tired. (Sleep paralysis usually happens when your in a new sleeping environment or really really tired/stressed, I found this by experience)

There's alot of spooky stuff that can happen with this.

Like one time my whole family and relatives were in the hotel, than I got sleepy paralysis and heard loud bang running on the roof. Really creepy.

Or sometimes you can hear door is trying to bang and open.

anyways, keep those tips in mind.
--------------------------

As for Lucid dreams, sometimes I feel like i'm living in the world of Dark Cloud 2, lol it sounds funny, but everything just feels like my style.

I must have really jinxed myself with this one, because last night, I experienced Sleep Paralysis for the first time. I'm terribly thankful that I knew what it was, because I would have lost my mind otherwise. I was in the middle of a terrible nightmare and something woke me up. The nightmare came with me unfortunately, projecting all sorts of disturbing images around my room. It lasted for almost a minute, which was frustrating to say the least. I read after that sleeping on your back can cause it, and that night was the first night I had slept on my back in a while (my cat was seated so that if I moved he would wake up and get testy, so I just laid still).
