A series of platforming levels

Archive: 10 posts

This is a random project that I started about 14 hours ago.

The fist level is all played in one layer and is a tower that you need to asscend. Not a castle tower or anything fancy, just using the VR materials. It is also a race. The aim is to get to the top of the tower in as little time as possible.

Each level will have stages with an infinite checkpoint at the start of each stage.

So far I have done stage one of the first level. That is further than I mormally get.

I need ideas and testers.

Thanks.

This is where I lost interest, sorry. The idea sounds nice, but I just can't stand levels made entirely out of VR material. The colors and the light just clash with everything else and it makes it look unprofessional. Granted, there are exceptions to the rule, and I hope your level becomes on of those exceptions.

The idea of a vertical level seems neat, though. Spoiler Alert, but deftmute is working on a level that does verticality very well, so I'm excited to see what you come up with.

Sorry for the noobish question, but VR materials are those that came with the MGS pack, the ones that are like black with flashy lines in green/red/blue/... that form squares?

If so, I must agree with comphy. It's a personal opinion, yes, but I feel that many people would agree with me; abusing of those materials it's bad. It gives the feeling that... well, that you don't bother much with the "atmosphere" of the level, that it isn't themed in any particular way. In all honesty, I kinda have to admit that I hate those materials >.<

But for the rest of the idea, I just have on word: NEAT. Seriously, I love platforming as much as I can't stand those VR materials so I would be one of the first persons to jump in it and play it; besides, I on't get to see many vertical levels. Neither I do get to see many "from right to left" levels also (wich is great, because they show you parts of the MM background that you don't often get to see).

So, if you combine the simple good ol' platforming with a race, I'm betting that the level will be amusing to say the least, with a lot of replayability in it too.
I definetely support projects like this, that go straight to the main point of LBP: platforming goodness.

So, if you simply decide to change those VR materials, I'll gladly play 'em all!

It sounds like a good idea to me. If the level is focused around vertical platforming, I don't think that the materials will be too much of an issue for me. One thing I would suggest though. Instead of putting an infinite life checkpoint, you should make one that climbs up the wall as you do, so it is basically saving your progress and if you die, you don't have to start over.2009-07-29 13:00:00

Hmmm... how I have the level now is that you go from left to right then up then right to left and up, and repeat. Would iit be better to make it almost completely vertical?

I will see what I can do to change the materials and stuff. I could make it look like some kind of cliff or something. O_o

You can continue in this manner, but as BSprague suggested, make it so that every second level you get to, the checkpoint moves up to follow you, so you can have one checkpoint throughout.

Like I said, there are exceptions.

I think you may have misinterpreted my post. I was talking about the layout of the level, not where the checkpoints are. There is a lift at the end of each stage which takes you up to the next. The checkpoints are in the lifts.

I may have to start a whole new level now to make it more vertical. It sounds better vertical. O_o Also, the 3rd stage in this 1st level is quite hard, especially for noobs so it may need to change.

EDIT: Oh yeah! I ditched the VR stuff and added in a nice paintinator section in stage 2 and a conveyor belt thing in stage 3. Stage 3 is a small area with electric bits to jump over and plasma balls firing above you so timing is very important. I may scrap this though.
