Hi.

I made a Portal level some months back with a working portal gun (the paintinator). If you want to test it; user search: Cykelpumpen.

There are some major issues though. I have placed out small segments that detects where the paint bullets hit. There is an emitter on each segment which emits a portal (checkpoint) when the segment is hit by a bullet. Because of the vast ammount of emitters on the level, it becomes overheated after making about 2-3 rooms.

I'm looking for another solution to emit portals without using one emitter for each segment. I've seen levels where you have a portal gun object instead of the paintinator, but I think this ruins the experience.

Any ideas?

Well, the best "actual" portal level I've seen was made by tactical_gunner. He used what sounds like the same method, but his level was pretty short as well. You're right that making it look convincing eats up your thermo. That's why when I made my Aperture Science trilogy I decided to just work around a portal gun. I kind of made it a parody in that instead of a portal gun, you get the paintinator. I don't think there's an easy way to do it, I'm sorry to say.

Alrighty. I guess I focus too much on the mechanical parts of the level rather than the playing experience itself. Played your portal level and I absolutely loved it!

I spend too much time focusing on making a level realistic and correct

If you haven't already, you should also check out the H.A.T.E. II from Voltiare - he has a couple really cool puzzles centered around the paintinator which use emitters to "simulate" the blocks disappearing from one place and appearing elsewhere.

The great thing is, between Voltiare's levels and Comphermc's levels, they've proven that through different Portal approaches you can create totally different experiences. I'd love to see what direction another creator takes with it.
