HALP!! Delay before a published level is searchable?

Archive: 9 posts

Hi all! Just gotta say that the community here is stellar... lots 'n LOTS of great info/tips can be found within these forums!!! (So much so, that I've not had to ask for help even once during the 2+ months I've been working on my very first level!).

That said, I had FINALLY finished working on my first level last night, publishing it with a HUGE sigh of relief (I was so paranoid of losing it to corrupt data, etc.!). Anyways, I was hoping to promptly create a "F4F" thread in the "Level Showcase" forum... but decided it best to make sure one can find my level through the Community Search. Now, before you go spouting it out, I've LONG KNOWN about the Mm search tips (http://www.mediamolecule.com/2009/02/25/shiny-new-search-features/) (I remember the ugly days of searching BEFORE Mm gave them to us!!), and believe me, I've double and triple-checked to make sure I was searching for my own level correctly. No dice.

(I've also looked through the 10 most recent pages of threads in this help forum, as well as searched to see if anyone had this same problem... but I couldn't find anything... so apologies if this question was already asked/answered and I just wasn't looking correctly.)

So does anyone know if there's some sort of delay after publishing a level, before you can search for it? Or maybe you can't search for your own levels?? (Boy, would I feel dumb if the latter was the case!) Any input would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!!! (^_^)

There is a possibility that there is a delay, have you checked the News Moon?

Click on "Me" and check if the published level is there. That's the only thing I can think of.

Wow... thanks for the super-insano-fast response! You're right about the "Me" method... as it's currently the only way I can access my published level... so I know it's been published (successfully?). Within the first hour of publishing it, I already had completely random people playing (and even commenting/hearting!!) my level, and I could even find it by going a few pages deep on the "Newest Levels" of Community search. I've republished it about a half-million times (well, at least six times) to fix/modify a few things... could that have any effect?

I suppose I could wait until Monday or something... as maybe they batch-update their search database with new entries?? It hasn't been a full 24 hours, after all.

Hmm, that is very strange, I was able to see my level about 10 minutes after publishing, but if it's been an hour already, then I have no idea. Hopefully someone with more experience can help you.

It's possible you are far in the "newest" page or maybe it's not refreshed the same as the cool levels.

You should be there though. And there's no choice, you appeared at least in the cool pages because how could people have played you level then?

Well, I've had some experience with this in the past, and I'm assuming the entire Planet, including the search feature, works from a cache to reduce server load. That cache probably isn't rebuilt extremely frequently - I'd guess every 15-20 minutes - which explains why you can't find a level when searching for it if it's been recently published. Selecting "My Levels" actually queries the server, so it shows the latest information instead.

Of course, this is all pure speculation based on personal experience, so take it with a grain of salt.

Cool levels does take around 10 minutes to refresh generally, sometimes a little more, depending on how many levels are getting published I suppose.

The worst time to publish anything is a weekend, to many levels vying for attention. The best thing to aim for is to publish on a weekday, so that hopefully the level is already on Cool Levels by the time the weekend comes and then you're not fighting people publishing a level, you'll have the bonus of more plays. The more people that publish a level, the faster yours sinks into oblivion unless its cemented on Cool Levels (you can tell this because it loses that shimmer and glow around the level.)

The ratio to stick on Cool Pages 5 was around 300 plays and 30 hearts, but with so many people now using the the republish trick it has seriously increased (if I remember correctly, the 300:30 got me page 10 and 800+ plays and around 80 hearts stuck me on page 5 this time around).

Thanks for the input guys... definitely appreciated. Anyways... thought I'd give you an update... though there's admittedly not much to update on.

It's been a few days now (published my level on Saturday night, 7/25... I think), and I still can't find my level (nor my PSN ID: Fatty_Fatness) through the community level text search. I've heard of some other people with this same problem, and I'm wondering if it has anything to do with this recent level rating glitch (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=14180&highlight=Rating&page=5) some people are attributing to the most recent patch. I have a (HORRIBLE!!!) feeling that it might even somehow be tied to my user profile, and my timing (relative to the patch) in publishing my very first level... since it seems that any level I create & publish from now on will also be "unsearchable". (I've published/republished separate copies of my original level, as well as a "locked" level and some empty test levels... and nothing.) I've already sent a courteous/descriptive "bug report" email to Mm about this... so hopefully they'll either fix/address it in an update, or (however unlikely) let me know what the problem is.

After all this strife, I did actually find a way for anyone to find my "unsearchable level" though!! Basically, (as you probably already know) clicking on a username of someone who left a comment on a level (or perhaps even in the high scores list) will then take you directly to their default "levels published" page. So to this end (to see if anyone not already on my friends list might be able to find/play my level) I had actually left a comment on the first level that shows up if you search for "Hot Potato"... and I believe it works! Granted, no one will actually bother with all this trouble... but it made me a little happy knowing that what I publish IS actually out there, buried in obscurity (which, I have to admit, is MUCH better than NOT knowing if it's even accessible to anyone!).

And FYI, my comment on this "Hot Potato" level (the first and only comment so far) was left in earnest... well, I DID want to test my theory, but I made sure to not leave a blatantly spamming link!!
