Help!

Hey, I'm thiking of trying some thing like this, but I'm having trouble pulling it off...

Right, I think it would be better to link to a flash game, rather than explaining it...

http://www.miniclip.md/Sports/Copter/game_28/EN

I'm not wanting to just make it a boring level like in that game, I just need help for the controls...

So basically, I need a flying vehicle/platform to constantly move across the screen, with the player only able to control the height.

Obviously I can easily make the flying thing. (Though I do have problems with them tipping side to side and end up crashing) Then they can use a grab switch to go higher, and release to go lower.

But how would I make it automatically scroll? I know the obvious thing is to use a piston? I tried this, and the result was'nt good. Because if you did crash, then it would'nt reset to the beginning, since I can't make the piston stiff, as it would'nt go up and down.

Hope you understand what I mean, though you should do as soon as you see that flash game.

Any tips appreciated.

Thanks.

Another way to do the sidescrolling would be to emit the areas coming toward the helicopter/vehicle, and moving them on a conveyor belt. If you check out the jetpack challenge in the collectors area, thats what MM did to make it "side scroll-ey" Just hold the vehicle from a piston at the top, when you grab it goes up, when you don't it goes down, and the scenery automatically moves forward.

I'm not sure you'll be able to reset very well though, seeing as a collision is more than likely to destroy the vehicle mechanisms.

I think this has been done before... i'm not sure where offhand though.

Make a small square of grab-able material and attach it to the helicopter from the layer behind, put the square in a track (vertically), that should stop the helicopter from spinning and only let them move it up and down.

Then put a thin layer which will be the background (the black area in the flash game) between the helicopter and the grab-able square.

Search for Super Libidius (spell check) it's very similar to what you want.

There was a Star Wars - Attack on the Death Star type survival challenge a while back. Sorry, I don't recall the author. It used a similar mechanic - hold R1 to go up, release to go down.2009-07-25 23:00:00
