Significant Events in LBP History

Archive: 50 posts

I saw MrGenjii post this question on LBPF, and with the 1 million marker, it got me thinking about what I thought were some major events in LBP...

- Ramp is published... is it good, is it bad, does it work, am I doing it right? No one ever finds out.

- Little Big Calculator... mind's blown, anything was possible with logic

- someone discovers that dark matter can be shrunken until it turns invisible

- 11/?/08 Ramp gets 2 million plays... making creators everywhere feel permanently unfulfilled

- Libidus pioneered the hidden sackboy technique that's been implemented and redesigned for an innumerable amount of level concepts

- the brilliant advent and swift demise of sackbook.com

- Ephemera two: A whisper Glimpsed by Subgnosis... first animation in LBP, and then The Movies by Teebonesy... mind's blown

- sackhouette by Luckett, Anti-Color by ZX497, and pixelation 1.0 by JackIsBack999 give us some visual effects tricks that had everyone scratching their heads... it kicked down the door for many high-end visual styles and has been a staple ever since

- SnowFlakeCat gives us the emitter-based Infinite Checkpoint, saving many levels from 1 star ratings for months to come

- the release of the MGS pack, and the paintinator completely changes the game, and with it the statement they made against trophy levels through Ocelot... all hope was not lost... what also came with it, was the monstrous failed to load level bug, that still has yet to be quelled

- NinjaMicWZ captures a paintball for use in Metal Slug Solid and the Automatic Paintball Rifle Demo... shares on forums

- new categories for searching, and the ability to use an @ symbol to search by author shows MM listens to their community

- 12/26/2008 xkappax makes the cow glitch public with a video on gamefaqs... everyone freaks, glitch is later patched out in an update

- 300,000 user level mark publically announced

- Jaeyden introduces us to teleportation

- Gilgamesh's closed beta for his bipedal mech/Celteen's Metal Gear Rex... chicken or the egg?

- the LBP music videos for Michael Jackson's "Beat It" and "Thriller" air for the first time

- the Little Big Contra project getting a combined 200,000 plays, all 8 levels on page 1 simultaneously, thousands of google search hits, a 1up feature, several mentions on gaming podcasts, an IGN feature, a kotaku feature, the being the subject of a Swedish college student's thesis on the future of personalized media, a shout out on G4TV, 7 crowns in one fell swoop, getting RyanardoDavinci interviewed in this months Game Informer, convincing hundreds of people and game journalists to buy LBP, and silencing all naysayers that we would be moderated and overturning the ever-looming copyright fist once and for all

- crown hysteria and unrest runs rampant, xkappax defines irony with a well timed animated mockery of the situation that nets her a crown on the next giveaway

- gevurah22 getting featured in OPM with Azure Palace, and getting hired on to demonstrate the create tools at Sony's LBP booths for shows like E3 and Comic Con

- deboerdave making custom music playable throughout the entire level, and it was cited as "crazy" and "amazing" on the reputable 1upYours gaming podcast, a week after Garnett Lee was trying not to spill the beans that LBP PSP would allow you to import music you've made on the go

- johnee getting hired by mediamolecule based on his amazing work on the future warzone project

- creator pack 1... finally real infinite checkpoints, new jetpack and cancel, invisible everything, and the angled switch radius

- Fallout 3: When the Bombs Fell.... waiting for an aftermath that never came

- starcruiser... mind's blown... anything was possible with visuals heh

- wexfordian submits the most over the top, visually impressive, entertaining and creative form of online application ever while simultaneously pleading for new DLC on our behalf in "Media Molecule's Next Level Pack"

- LBP's 1 millionth level... I wonder which one was exactly the millionth?

A couple other more opinionated ones I think are pretty cool -

- MostevilMilo getting his "In the Belly of the Beast" level on one of MM's picks, and pretty much opening the flood gates for the lack of moderation that once plagued levels like Azure Palace

- my friend JonMartin finally finishing all 20 episodes of Little Big Apocalypse and completing the most epic, creative, and complete series on LBP... animation coming soon

- my friend CENTURION24 getting 5 levels permanently stuck on cool pages at one time, and spelling out I <3 LBP with the level icons... not once, but TWICE in two weeks.

- my friend GruntosUK, for finally proving that MM isn't oblivious to how talented and dedicated some of their community creators are

- AAAlone's amazing comeback with Moving Parts against all odds

So what are yours... any technical or creative achievements, landmarks or flukes you think changed the face of LBP?

Well, you kinda forgot:
- The all expected Cornish Yard and Creator Pack 1
- The rise and fall of the Planetoid, not to mention the 2 guys who ran the place got hired by Mm.
- "X-NOBODY-X" Taking over the cool pages before the 7-day limit was placed.
- Me entering the LBP community.
- The "Ideas for Mm's next level pack" movie/ level.
- LBPC.
And that's just of the top of my head.
I'll add more later if someone else doesn't add them first.

I was going to include the birth of LBPC, but then I would have had to go into the game's release, it's delay controversy, the formation of MM, the early demonstration and preview videos etc lol

I did not know that about Planetoid... that one's definitely significant.

Creator Pack... yes.

You? I thought you were still being beta tested, and we weren't allowed to talk about it?

If only we could pinpoint the first trophy and H4H levels... Wex's Inside the Mind would go right next to those heh

blech @ NOBODY... I'd rather transcribe the alignment of stars that lead to the birth of the one known as geosautus... but NOBODY did pull one gangsta drive by on cool pages for quite awhile, had a huge amount of success with solid work, and pioneered alot of cross promotion techniques.

What?
What do you mean i was being beta tested?
Am i not finished yet and still being build? (Well i gues i do have a lot of glitches )

No but seriously, i don't get what you're trying to say here, or is it a joke i'm not getting or something?

EDIT: Oh, now i remember 2 new ones.
- The creation of the "Mighty Mite Tank" aka one of the best/ most complicated vehicles made)
- Distress in Ocean level. (Well, was kinda important. more after it was copyable and 90% of players decided to copy-publish it as their own...)

WOW!! I didn't realise how far LBP has come. It is nice to have a game that you can realy feal apart of and even feal like you can help with the direction it takes. Im curious to see what people think about your posts and who or what they think you left out. Oh & WEX's mm lvl should be on the final draft.2009-07-23 23:50:00

Yes, it was a joke, Leon... you know you my dog.

Me too, Centurion. I figure everyone can get on board with their own LBP timeline. I'm sure there's plenty of levels I haven't seen, or things that they think changed the game for them, or just stuff that's slipping my mind.

I'm down with crediting wex somewhere, just not sure what, 'cause I can't just throw all my favorite levels and creators on there lol... I do think he's one of the most trend setting creators on LBP though. Submitting an application as a level is about as memorable as it gets though. Maybe he'll go down in history on his next project *nudge nudge wink wink*

I'd say Create Pack 1. Things like Global Lighting Tool/ making rods and stuff invisible seem like so standard today, it's actually hard for me to imagine when we had to have one standard light throughout the ENTIRE level.2009-07-24 00:38:00

You forgot "xkappax makes an animation making fun of how everyone wants a crown and accidentally gets a crown" j/k

Honestly, you're right. LBP has come a long way since I started playing. The days of sitting on gamefaqs for hours and hours begging for plays seem so long ago. So much has happened.

I think probably one of the biggest milestones/victories for the creators, though, was definitely when Grant got a crown for an actual original level. That made me realize that media molecule / sony / whoever are finally starting to reward people for original content, which is ultimately what the game is about.

And i can think of another milestone, ninja, but I don't think I can talk about that until after the beta. ^_^

I'm surprised no-one mentioned this:

- gevurah22's Azure Palace recieving critical praise... then being moderated, thus raising awareness of Mm's lack of security, which was criticized in PTOM, Game Informer and X-Play.

- the rise of "Anti-H4H"... resulting in an even bigger problem than H4H itself

- LBP Golf Challenge launches, in honor of Sackboy making it into Hot Shots Golf, which takes 3 months, thus christening 20 people with crowns, the most ever given out of one competition.

- Luckett_X releases "Sackhouette", the first level to use a silhouette format in LittleBIGPlanet.

That's all I have to say.

Actually, you know what? Now that I think about it... one of the biggest milestones for me, personally, was when cool levels got "fixed" the first time. All the beta levels got zapped from page one, and to my surprise, our first level, Centralia, was on page 3 along with Robotic Automatic. It was really a cool feeling. I know that sounds sappy, lol, I'm sorry.2009-07-24 03:41:00

That whole change was definitely a big event... so was crown hysteria and the parody and the irony lol, and the sackhouette look - if I remember right, that was before Anti-Color and Pixelation, and was the first glimpse at trippy "how'd they do that?" effects. Definitely noteworthy.

We need specific dates for this stuff, and graph that makes it look more legit

You know what... I've been trying to build a "My Favorite Levels" promotional level (really over the top ideas to go with it... only 10% done though), that I might put on hold... I think I finally thought of something that might get me motivated again - a playable timeline and museum of LBP history, themed after all these events once we get them all compiled.

This would include MM's backstory, early LBP builds, the beta, the start of LBPC and other sites, the controversial song and delays, a montage of the early days to levels like World of Color and Ramp etc first episode of sackcast, the one time MM news was updated lol

:/ @ this being like a book report... Yay or nay?

Well im working on something at the moment that i, personally have never seen ever attempted in LBP. Iv let steve_big_guns and a few other of my friends take a look at it and they all agree it could be something good.

I'll be sure to keep you guys posted. It is looking to be completed within a few day's.

Excellent idea for a thread and level Ninja.

-What about xkappax finding the cow glitch? Allowing us to use floaty dark matter, dissolving rubber etc etc.
-When cool levels was finally fixed
- The new search options, making finding levels easier.
- What was the first ever level competition from MM?

-Discovery of the invisible dark matter
-The first ever trailer/live film in LBP, made by Johnee
-LBP proven not only as a form of creativity, but of art as well: Nattura's Fantasy Forest
-Rise of the user-made superhero costumes
-Pinball madness, proven a worthy cause by Fishbone0's first amazing pinball level

Great thread!

Nice thread, and lots of memories. I can't believe it's all happened in less than a year, and yet it sometimes seems that LBP has always been here.

I can only add a few things myself...

- the ICO level by Mushroom_Samba. I remember when it was originally published, it was one of the first community levels I'd played. I was amazed and stupefied.

- on a negative note (but important in LBP history nonetheless), was the plethora of problems after the release of the MGS pack. The 'failed to load' errors, the 'red screens of death' etc. Gawd, I remember the pain, I really do.

I just thought of three more that could be added to the timeline!

1. LittleBigPlanet gets delayed a week because of a song, but Newegg doesn't care and sells it anyway.

2. LittlebigPlanet releases and cool levels is completely broken. A person on gamefaqs named Okita starts doing reviews of select levels to help them get more exposure.

3. The republishing trick is discovered.

You know, I've actually been documenting this stuff, just as a sort of lbp journal for myself. I can actually get you some specific dates, Ninja, if you'd like. My photos that I took of certain things would be time stamped. Here, let me look really quickly.

All right, here we go:
The date of the first cool levels fix was: December 19th, 2008 (this was also the day that they added the new features like "highest rated" and stuff like that)

The date of the 2nd cool levels fix was: February 24th, 2009

The date that I made the cow glitch public to the gamefaqs community (i am not by any means the one who came up with it, but I posted a video of it on youtube, thinking that everyone knew about it and the community FREAKED OUT): December 26, 2008

These dates are probably only significant to me, but I'll post em anyway.
The date the crown animation was started: April 17th, 2009. This was the day that mm had a mass crowning of people. Some of the community was in an uproar because they felt that while some deserved the crowns, that others didn't ... and so on and so forth... I thought the whole thing was silly, so I wrote a parody of the whole crown thing.

The date the crown animation got on media molecule's blog: April 27th, 2009

I hope this helps. I take a lot of pictures of things, and they're all timestamped, so if you need any more dates, I can see what I can do!

I will edit all this stuff accordingly chezhead, just let me catch up. Plenty of significant stuff in here.

-LBP proven not only as a form of creativity, but of art as well: Nattura's Fantasy Forest

I actually made a thread about that along time ago, but nobody really cared to discuss the topic lol I don't think anyone understood what I meant about really pushing the concept of what LBP can be forward.

https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=9000&highlight=pushing+envelope

In retrospect, I don't know if I feel the same way about some of these levels, but anyone that knows me knows I'm all about stuff like that. Not sure who I would credit as breaking the mold, Berg443 or Subgnosis, probably, but even then none of us know which one came first out of the thousands of unplayed first month levels... or what, subjectively can be called art. I remember posting this topic on some other forums too (started a HUGE argument on 1up about video games and art, and console vs PC somehow lol), and I think I added in some other levels like The Movies by Teebonesy.

Well, that is a great compiliations of triumphs in the LittleBigPlanet world. I think everyone has already mentioned the things I would have said. The only thing that I would have mentioned is the birth of LittleBigLife, which to me is 1,000x more impressive that LittleBigCalculator (not that it isn't amazing). It doesn't seem like much to someone who doesn't understand Conway's Game of Life, but the engineering behind it is absolutely insane.2009-07-24 22:40:00

This thread is great ninja! I'm really enjoying reminiscing on all of this stuff. I've thought of two more. I forget when it happened, but back in november, Randofu created a LittleBigPlanet facebook app. It was really good for finding good levels back then. Until everyone realized they could just rate their own.

And we can't forget Maraz_Matari's reviews for the people by the people. It was the only Review for Review thread that ever stuck on gamefaqs. People used it right up until everyone left that site for LBPCentral.com. That's actually how I found out about a ton of good levels and good creators, including GruntosUK!

TBH I find this thread interesting for the fact that LBP is a game that has only been around for like 9 months (OK beta phase before but shush now) and it already has developed so much, in terms of itself and in the way player-creators have shaped it, that it has a "history"! Quite a testament don't you think? Or maybe just a testament to the game's addictiveness and stranglehold upon us

I think that this game is different because it's really supported by devs, unlike many PC Mod games, and the concept is really glued to the core of the game.

You forgot about the Tree Fortress levels being the greatest levels ever. I'll let it slide this time. Don't let it happen again.

What about the Azure Palace?
Or how about Cool Levels still being dominated by "first!" and "my lvl" levels, proving that Cool Levels hasn't changed at all.
OR the invention of the first prize level?
H4H level?
Anti-H4H level?
Michael Jackson's death spawning tons of crappy tribute and music levels.

I can't say I'm a fan of Beethy's reviews. They aren't even reviews most of the time. And his attempts at vulgar and shocking humor usually fail. Or at least t o me.

Just thought of a few:

-Mm publically shows their dissatisfaction with H4H with the Judge Dredd Poster which shows Judge Dredd stomping on H4H. Sadly H4H is still not Good-Griefable...

-NinjaMicWZ makes a level where one person has to use a jetpack and the other a paintanator. Minds blown .

-Miguel543 uses the red button to make a 3D affect leaving everyone scratching their heads.

-Jump Challenge levels arise and continue to make Cool Levels look horrible. One can only ask when will these people will learn the word originality.

-Bakscratch introduces everyone to the "50 layer glitch" which brings us to:
-Thi766 makes LBP's first 3D level.
-Ratings disappear from levels (not confirmed that its because of the glitch but I'd say its a pretty safe bet)

That's all I got for now, I'll return if I think of anything else .
