The Descentjavi_haguse Based on the horror movie "The Descent". You wake up and go look for your missing friends that have gone to a unexplored cave. But you'll never guess what you'll find inside. This level will freak you out! I put a lot of work into it, hope you like it. all I'm also working on part 2 at the moment. I'm willing to do 10 F4F | 2009-07-23 21:11:00 Author: javi haguse Posts: 744 |
I just played your level and I must say the atmosphere and everything is just amazing! You perfectly captured the horror mood and atmosphere with the darkness, flashing lights, and erie sounds. Their is lots of detail as well. I like how you did the note . It is already perfect the way it is so there is nothing I can suggest. I only wish it was longer. Also after you find the dead body on the light there is 3 speech bubbles. The 2nd one is censored for some reason just to let you know I rated it :star::star::star::star::star: and hearted it | 2009-07-24 01:09:00 Author: baahas Posts: 74 |
I played through this with you and was very impressed. The visuals are extremely well done and you've done a wonderful job at recreating the creepy tension from the film. I loved the night vision sequence! The gameplay is solid, but I wish there was a bit more for the player to do and I wish it was a bit longer. Other than that, it's a visual treat oozing with atmosphere! Well done! I've also been lucky enough to take a sneak peak at the second part and I can't wait to see the finished project. If you maintain the quality of the first, we're in for a treat! | 2009-07-24 03:13:00 Author: mrsupercomputer Posts: 1335 |
Wow, this level had a great atmosphere. It was depressing that it ended so quickly. I don't really have any complaints, but I will tell you the two parts that made me heart this level: +The note on the table that was emitted. That was brilliantly done. I would suggest setting the max emitted to greater than one, because I wanted to see it again! +The night-vision flash with the alien/monster cutout. It was very well done...nice work. The level was short, but it was full of goodness. Thank you for sharing, and I am looking forward to your next work. | 2009-07-24 03:41:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |
+The note on the table that was emitted. That was brilliantly done. I would suggest setting the max emitted to greater than one, because I wanted to see it again! Ah, yes, the note! I can't believe I forgot to mention that. Probably one of the coolest parts of the level! Very well done! | 2009-07-24 06:08:00 Author: mrsupercomputer Posts: 1335 |
Thanks a lot for the comments!! I'm glad you guys liked it. I know the level is short, but it was because I filled up the temperature to quickly. It was the way I was building the cavern, that I ended up with a ton of complicated shapes. But I've learned my lesson. So hopefully part 2 will be longer, scarier and with more gameplay. Thanks again I'll play your lv today comphermc | 2009-07-24 13:11:00 Author: javi haguse Posts: 744 |
Hey there, Just got around to playing this level. First off i really liked the way you did the note (i've wanted to do something like that for a while) but you pulled it off to perfection, it really makes it seem like more of a roleplaying level, which is unique. Generally the problems people found from above i didnt have any problem with so well done for fixing those. I thought the atmosphere was great, night vision section was also unique and well done which worked very well together. Nice use of GLS! As i have already said the atmosphere was great, your use of silouetted monsters and scuttling was top notch. Overall i gave the level :star::star::star::star::star: Definetly worth a play from anyone. If you've got the time could you play and comment on : The Artists World for F4F? https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=14025 Thanks Black-Toof:arg: | 2009-07-24 13:22:00 Author: BlackToof Posts: 172 |
Thanks! I actually didn't use the gls. It wasn't available at the moment I was building this level, so I did it the hard way. Basically I used green spotlights all over, some that were foggy in the bg to give more depth. The entire level was completely dark, so I had to light it that way. I was able to use the gls at the end, when you find the flashlight. | 2009-07-24 13:27:00 Author: javi haguse Posts: 744 |
This levels looks awesome. The terrain is detailed and organic feeling, good use of layers, lighting and atmosphere. A good spooky feel to it - there's not alot going on, but like in the movie, I'm sure it'll pick up when the monsters make their appearance in part 2. Even without alot of action, the platforming was fun and well constructed. The night vision section was sick... one of the coolest lighting effects I've seen in a long time. | 2009-07-25 06:50:00 Author: Unknown User |
This is awesome. Great atmosphere, lights, style and use of the text, that is never boring or useless. Really really well done,is clear how you put in a lot of attention also in the most little detail. Night vision is the best part, but i've like many little things, like the dead sackboy or the notebox. Only thing, for a slow rhythm/story level is a little bit short but was'nt your fault, the thermometer is a problem for all I gived it :star::star::star::star::star: and wait the sequel | 2009-07-25 09:53:00 Author: GEK83 Posts: 163 |
Thanks a lot for the comments!!! | 2009-07-25 20:08:00 Author: javi haguse Posts: 744 |
I actually need a little help with part 2.. I do want to have more action and gameplay in part 2, but as you've seen I like being as detailed as I can. I'm scared because I've never done monsters and I don't want them to be little monsters on wheels.... So you think I should include monsters? And also, what kind of gameplay would you like to see? I have a few ideas already that are awesome (I think) but I want to know your input.. Can you guys help me?? | 2009-07-26 01:02:00 Author: javi haguse Posts: 744 |
Played through this tonight and really REALLY liked it. Fantastic lighting and atmosphere. Wonderfully rendered shapes in the cave. Gross you have to use the dead repelling guy but interesting. Genius = night vision goggles. Lighting as a plot point is really clever. Only complaint is there isn't more of it. You appear to have the same complex shapes thermo issues I run into. Pain in the tush I know. 5 stars & hearted! For part two I'd really like to see more platforming/interactive stuff. Since it's a cave you could have a repelling section where we drop down. Cliff climbing of one sort or another. A dark area with obstacles much like the Darkness level in story mode where you have to position a light to see what your doing. Check out coyoteblue's ninja levels to see his grappling hook idea too - might be able to rework something similar for part of your next level. Can't wait to see it! | 2009-07-26 05:50:00 Author: Morgana25 Posts: 5983 |
Cool level, I enjoyed it a lot even without knowing the film. I wait for part 2 since this one was too short 5 stars | 2009-07-26 16:54:00 Author: OmegaSlayer Posts: 5112 |
This level was sooo creepy...It was awesome! This level had a great atmosphere, i loved playing it It was really creepy, the part where you see the firgure in the night vision made me jump a little. Awesome detail, i loved the landscape and the bridge was excellent. Good mechanics, i like how the note pops up like it does in some video games (Whose names escape me right now) I had to turn my gamma to the highest because it was really dark when you first walk out of the house though >.< My only problem was that it was short and leaves you at the most suspenseful time. Seeing as you can fix that, build the sequel! 5/5 tag brilliant My F4F level is Turrotolia, id appreciate it if you gave it a review | 2009-07-26 17:02:00 Author: King_Tubb Posts: 435 |
Just played this, and I really loved the atmosphere and the letter and nightvision parts were really well done! unfortunately, I couldn't finish it as a collapsing platform fell in such a way as to block the flash light from me completely and I fell into darkness and got lost Other than a bit TOO dark in some places (I want to see your work! ), but that might be my individual tv/ps3 settings who knows! I rated it :star::star::star::star:, creepy | 2009-07-28 13:15:00 Author: LemmingCounciler Posts: 16 |
So did you finish it or just got stuck? Sorry about that... I just fixed the censorship bug that I had going on(thanks to baahas for noticing). For some reason it was censoring the sentence "What happened to this sackboy?!"... It turned out to be that the word "happened" was censoring everything... who knows why! But I switch it to "Its a dead sackboy..." I also fixed an exposed sensor in the house.. Thanks for the comments everyone, I can proudly say that 1 out of 4 ppl heart my level (311 plays, 74 hearts), so I'm very pleased! Thanks for the support. | 2009-07-28 17:49:00 Author: javi haguse Posts: 744 |
I played this a couple of days ago with Zwollie and Whaaaale, it's a superb level! As well as this, it was rather creepy as well, which is what I like best! Of the three I was possibly the only one who was smiling at the gore and atmosphere The nightvision part rocked, the detail was very good, I only have a couple of negatives: - It's short! I know it's due to thermo problems, but there are many ways that you can reduce the thermometer level. If you want I can help you do so, I had the same problems with my first couple of levels but you find ways of bringing it down to make long and even more epic levels - There's quite a bit of slowdown in some parts, possibly due to the lighting that you've used. If you're using spotlights to get the effect, that's great, but tone it down a bit or use LED lights as a substitute. These are more likely to reduce slowdown Oh, and one more thing, I fell through and underneath the level at one point, not sure where but it was towards the end. Overall, a brilliant level, I rate five and gave a heart. | 2009-07-28 21:21:00 Author: KoRnDawwg Posts: 1424 |

20th post and straight to cool levels I hope it will get more visibility there, but man, don't be lazy and give us part 2 soon, ok? | 2009-07-29 07:21:00 Author: OmegaSlayer Posts: 5112 |
This level looked really nice and the platforming was pretty cool. I especially liked the night vision part, that was pretty awesome. I also liked the letter that emitted and the windmill that you go in. Hopefully there will be a lot of monsters and action in part 2 which I'm looking forward to . | 2009-07-30 01:42:00 Author: brnxblze Posts: 1318 |

That was a really great level! I felt like I was in that cave, dude. I like the sound effects and how everything collapsed! 5/5 | 2009-08-01 05:08:00 Author: LittleBigIan Posts: 27 |
wow!....WOW! I haven't ever seen the movie, but now I'm thinking I will. :star: I usually have issues with 'dark' levels (mostly because I have a crappy little tv that is prone to glare) but This had GREAT use of lighting! I especially liked the part when you don the night vision goggles and the silhouette flashes on the back layer! :star: Also the little skittering things in the darkness as you walk up the tunnel were a great touch! :star: I really like the note box with the emitter.. really classy way to prompt a player! I wish you could pull it up again, though. I enjoyed myself immensely, thanks for reminding me to check it out. -------------------------------- A thought on Thermo...Since the cavern level is so dark. you might be able to reclaim some heat with the corner editor, and also the debris that falls if you were to glue some of it to the floor instead of dropping. Any-way, just a thought. | 2009-08-01 05:55:00 Author: swanbrown Posts: 898 |
Excellent level I have to say. Noticed a couple of smal issues: - Could you make the magic mouth radius a little bigger on your cutscenes? Once or twice I ran right past and was out the other side before I had read it and had to go back and find the right spot to trigger it again. - At the checkpoint just after the night vision camera, there are two boulders that fall down. I thought I was to follow them and jumped downwards only to land on a massive spotlight and fall completely out of the level. Aside from that I thought it was excellent. Great use of the Global lighting tool and a neat story thrown in. 5 stars from me. | 2009-08-03 00:21:00 Author: Matt 82 Posts: 1096 |
Thanks Matt for the bug you found! I actually never noticed that, but I just fixed it. At first I couldn't understand what boulders were you talking about, but I finally figured it out. I'm republishing right now.. Thanks for the comments too!! | 2009-08-05 02:15:00 Author: javi haguse Posts: 744 |
Whoa whoa whoa. This level is crazy good! I haven't seen the movie I had a great time going through the level. From the note in the box to the nightvision googles to the little sound effects and unknown scurrying around in the cave.. it was incredible. Great use of lighting. Draws you all in. Waiting for the next part. :star::star::star::star::star: & hearted as author. Great job! | 2009-08-05 23:59:00 Author: MrTran Posts: 216 |
I was getting really into it but then it ended so soon! ): I can't wait until your part two comes out! I especially loved when you found Sarah's night-vision camera and you could see the creature for a quick second! Great job! | 2009-08-08 17:52:00 Author: GrahamLif3 Posts: 386 |
As everyone says : - great atmosphere - great design - great and well-made ideas (the note, night vision, the hanging dead sackboy...) I enjoyed it very much, too bad it's that short... Just one thing, for the intro titles, u should use some selfmade letters (like the level avatar) instead of those boring stickers... :star::star::star::star::star: and heart | 2009-08-08 19:51:00 Author: dajdaj03 Posts: 1486 |
i played it today it was realy good | 2009-08-11 20:10:00 Author: Unknown User |
Really loving this level - it's super spooky! Think you did really well to create such a scary atmosphere, and really like the way the level looks. I had a good time playing it! Nothing I can suggest for improving it, will look forward to your next level! | 2009-08-12 18:15:00 Author: littlebot Posts: 60 |
Tried this level yesterday, and I was very impressed. It could be said it was too dark, but such as it is now, it has one of the best atmospheres I've seen. It is incredibly scaring xD Congrats, :star::star::star::star::star: and hearted | 2009-08-12 19:03:00 Author: poms Posts: 383 |
Great one! Some sudden surprises supplemented with spooky scares! I really like the scene when the room flashes a greenish tinge and you briefly see a figure. Can't wait until the next level to see where this goes! | 2009-08-13 07:25:00 Author: hilightnotes Posts: 1230 |
I played level a while back and really loved it. Didn't know there was a thread here! so here's the feedback! First the detail in the whole level was amazing! From the cabin to the caves it looked great! The note on the table is still one of my favorite moments in LBP online, little touches like that are sweet! But like another person said it would be nice to see it more than once. The suspense was great too. The atmosphere was definitely chilling. I really like how the cave was all falling apart. The "night vision" section was also great. This is one of the best horror themed levels out there! But my only real complaint is that it was too short, but like you I have a lot of trouble with the thermometer too. So i played this level a while back and sorry If I readdressed fixed problems:blush: Hope you have good success with it! And you've impelled me to watch the movie too! :star::star::star::star::star: (I think I hearted it If i didn't I will be sure to once I get back to my PS3) Oh and can you please do some f4F for my level, SIREN: The Lost World [Episode 2-Otherside] The link is in my signature for more information you might need. Thanks I really appreciate it! | 2009-08-19 14:53:00 Author: Noroibito Posts: 211 |
not only did i think this level was fantastic, it entertained my roommate, the curmudgeon. all the little details like things moving in shadows, the note (which was awesome, but in the future consider grabbing a font from lite-sleeper or becsta15 instead of the MM nonfont) night vision and so forth. at one point i had to interrupt the wtf in progress for another wtf if that makes sense. | 2009-08-21 16:52:00 Author: Deftmute Posts: 730 |
Wow, you did an amazing job on the atmosphere in this! Beautifully designed : ) The ONLY thing I'd change (and it's nothing to do with the level itself) is the text at the end saying yer thermo ran out, it takes you out of the vibe a little prematurely. Just stick in a cliffhanger message? | 2009-08-21 18:05:00 Author: julesyjules Posts: 1156 |
Yes! I definitely liked the atmosphere as well, and most remember the enlarged note at the beginning. That was very innovative...not many people use enlarged objects that you read like that (Kiminski's Lara Cloth level comes to mind w/the communicator, but this was way different). Great Job! | 2009-08-21 20:16:00 Author: miltonTPS Posts: 126 |
Hey man! Sorry for a late feedback, just got back from a loooong Vacation. But anywho! As said on the other post, the Note Paper was off the chain! it seemed like a cut scene from a movie, really nice! The level was soooo Creepy but i LOVED IT! i gave it 5 stars and a heart. =] | 2009-08-22 01:02:00 Author: Toinkz Posts: 19 |
Awesome level! I'm not surprised it's been spot lighted. I'm so glad I decided to play this one first. It had that "dead space" creepy feel that I like. I loved that you chose to only show the shadows of the creatures. I also really liked the lighting effects (especially the flash light and the night vision). This level is also very detailed and gorgeous .. I was having a good time just looking around! Props to you .. I gave this level 5 :star::star::star::star::star: and a "brilliant" tag, and a heart - and I hearted you as a creator! Nicely done! | 2009-08-30 23:50:00 Author: Powershifter Posts: 668 |
Very well done. I appreciate this level even more now that your sequel is out. This level has some great atmosphere, not to mention some fantastic lighting and good ideas (the note is a stand-out for me). I really liked how you never really showed us the creatures in the cave, so far we have only been able to catch glimpses of it, which is perfect. You get more thrills by what you don't see after all. Great job! | 2009-09-04 16:28:00 Author: Frazer951 Posts: 117 |

Thanks for the feedback. Your level was pretty good for a "themed" level, although the only difficulty was the darkness of the level. Nice mood to the level. | 2009-09-09 00:46:00 Author: kinjodourden Posts: 21 |
ok my opinion on this level: I already posted an extensive post on how fantastic part 2 was, that it pains me that I cannot be as enthusiastic on this one. Don't get me wrong, I loved this level as well and as mentioned in previous comments it has some touches of genius. The thing I want to say is, this level shows a genius wanting to come out of the shell and create a whole fantastic level instead of pieces of brilliance. In part 2 you created an all out great level. In part 1 you had the atmoshpere with brilliant touches such as the note, the night vision effect but you lacked gameplay. It was a bit running and some jumping and it ended too abruptly. However, still a good level ! If you continue this rate of improvement (descent 1 : 7.8/10 -> descent 2 : 9.2/10 ) then your third installment should be astronomical epic :-) | 2009-09-09 21:18:00 Author: nightwing Posts: 422 |
Dang it. I somehow erased everything that I had wrote down and now I have to start all over again. Oh well. Well, I just played your level quite late at night, I'm the only person up in the house and its freakin dark. This level was freaked me out it was so scary, which is why I'm waiting until the morning to play the second level. The level was great though, and the lighting effects that you had really added to the creepyness and whatnot. The level was great! Sorry, I don't really have much to say, since I'm pretty tired and the computer erased everything that I had said before. Great job with this level man! Five stars and a heart! | 2010-07-31 05:57:00 Author: eagerneph Posts: 1536 |
