Roller Coaster help

Archive: 3 posts

Well first off hi! I'm new to this site and pretty new to LBP too. My PSN is N_D_F. I am willing to join in on any activites because I love LBP.

Anyways I was wondering if anyone could help me build a roller coaster. I'm planning to make a really high one. If anyone of you live in the Toronto area I mean Canada's Wonderland's Behemoth high. So if anyone could help me I'd love it. Thanks

Not really sure what you mean by "help". Do you have no idea where to begin? Making a roller-coaster type level is pretty difficult to explain with text. I would try searching youtube, as I'm sure someone has posted a video showing how to make a basic roller-coaster. The problem is that there are many different ways to accomplish this, and each design requires a specific method.

Honestly, though, roller-coaster levels have been done countless times already. Don't you want do try to do something original? More power to you if that's what you want to do, but it's going to be tough to impress the community. Or are you just trying to have some fun (which is understandable)?

My suggestion is that you start with some basics, like building a cart with thin-layer wheels and having it run on a flat track.

Building a rollercoaster level is not necessarily difficult, but requires many pieces of knowledge:

a. How to control rockets with magnetic switches and keys.... you'll notice many roller coasters will push the roller coaster around loops but allow it to coast down on declines.

b. Using materials in a way that doesn't break - if the roller coaster contains many cars, how are you going to connect them together so that they don't break when speeding up slowing down? Learning to properly use connectors such as springs can help here.

c. Emitters - if your roller coaster has to go around loops, you need to remove and add sections controllably to properly handle this. So, when the roller coaster gets near a loop you need to add the start section of the loop, and when it passes this part you need to add the end section of the loop.

d. Connecting wheels and having them "ride" on the thin layers - using proper materials and bolts can help here.

As Comphermc said, there are many techniques and pieces of knowledge that add up to doing a proper rollercoaster level, so best to start with the basics.

However, if you successfully pull it off you will have quite a bit of experience for your next level.
