Dynasty Warriors 6

Anyone else play this game? I rented it on a whim, but I find it kinda boring. All I really do is mash Square and occasionally press Circle when I'm being mobbed. I haven't gotten very far, I just feel so uber-powerful that there's almost no challenge. Does it get harder later on or should I just take it back?2009-07-22 18:13:00

There are several versions of Dynasty Warriors out at the moment. I believe there is the normal one, plus a battle one, I think called Dynasty Warriors 6: Battle; which focuses more on a stategic point of view rather than the take charge of one hero that is the staple of the series, and then finally Dynasy Warriors: Gundam 2. The Gundam one is completely different, but is based around similar concepts while being set in the Gundam Universe. I think there might be one other version again which I can't remember off the top of my head.

I own Gundam 2 but have not yet had a chance to play it. I loved the first Gundam one though and am sure it will be just as fine a game. As for the regular Dynasty warriors, I got a PS2 version of the game but became frustrated with the short draw distance. I haven't played any current gen Dynasty Warriors yet, but would like to if I had unlimited time and resources.

The strategy for Dynasty Warriors Gundam was quite deep. There was the general rush of mechs which were a piece of cake to smash through, but the ace fights were really complex, as you would have to block and counter with good timing while being aware of your allies and opponents circling you and trying to stab you or your opponent in the back. I'd imagine it would be a similar affair for Dynasty Warriors 6. Have you had many fights against enemy generals/captains?

I've fought some, yes, mostly when I'm trying to take over a base. There'll be somewhere around 150 enemies and one captain unit or something. The thing is is I don't see much diversity between different fights. It's all just "Run here, kill them with square, use circle if you get mobbed, rinse, repeat".2009-07-23 16:34:00

Well, once again I don't have DW:6 itself, but from what I have seen of the series, the complexities lie in fighting different unit types, like the necessity to kill archer units that tend to be up the back first. Otherwise they will just keep hitting you while you are dealing with everything else, which is not a good thing.

Another challenge that is unique to the series is managing the different areas. You can't just go through and capture all the areas in a random order, at least not by the end of the game. Some areas have more importance than others, and capturing areas that surround hard areas can help reduce the numbers of troops in the hard areas and therefore make them easier to capture. You also need to consider the routes that areas connect. Some areas are close together, but you cannot path between them, so you have to plan whether it's worthwhile to fight your way into a dead end or not.

Finally as well, some missions require you to skip areas, due to a time limit or certain allies or enemies appearing or disappearing after a certain time. In the beginning you can be slow and methodical in clearing out the whole map, but by the end of it all you really do need to be in the right places at the right time or else you will lose, no matter how skilled or efficient you are.

Again I have not seen DW:6, but that's what I have seen from the rest of the series I have seen. It always starts off slow and easy, with the trash being hyper weak and the aces being so so, with plenty of time and straightforward maps to clear. By the end of the game though, it's certainly not a push over. Having to defend key territories or allies at 2 or 3 different places, complex area maps, different reinforcements or changes happening to the overall strategy, like a third force attacking what was a stable side, all add to the strategic mix of it all.

I hope that all helps. That's what I have found from previous DW exposures. I'd say if by level 10 it's still being dead boring and easy, then it might not be the right game for you, but if it starts to get interesting, then stick with it.
