Krazy Krane Concept

Archive: 12 posts

I have a mini - game I dreamed up over the weekend.

Basically, its this:

You have 60 seconds to grab as many boxes as possible, using a crane (or Krane, is you will) filled with points and / or prizes. After the 60 seconds are up, the controls jam, and then you go to the boxes, relishing in their contents.

Is this a good idea?

Could I improve on it?
Any help and support much appreciated, thanks ever so much!

It'll be tough. Ironically, I just today made a crane similar to what you would need, but that's not the hard part. The hard part is that it's tough to get the crane lined up enough to grab the 'boxes'. It's possible, but you also will run into trouble with breaking the boxes if you put the strength of the arms too high. Good luck.

this would be kind of cool, except 60 seconds sounds like not much time to grab things. Cranes can be kind of tempermental, and not necessarily easy to work with 1p.2009-07-22 00:32:00

I beg to differ... my crane design RULZ! Ha ha, but no really - If you make it right, it's very functional. Just don't make the player pull a 3-way switch...it's not quick enough. Have a left and right grab switch...

Edit: you can make it automatically grab objects if you bring the crane down so the object is in its "sweet spot". I believe that this is how MM did the crane in one of their story levels...

actually, if i were to build a crane, i'd probably use a player tracking device and a following grabswitch. That way, commands are limited to grabbing, and you can move while grabbing, etc.

MM grabbed the car when a key switch was in range, so yes you can program the claw to close when an object is in reach. but if this is like the crane game i'm horrible at, i'm not sure you can guarantee that the crane will grab said item.

What I would do is put the crane on a track, and have the player grab a piece of sponge and pull it back and forth. This allows for maximum accuracy and ease of use on the player's part. The actual crane would be activated by a button above the player that they jump to activate.2009-07-22 02:07:00

BSprague's got the right idea. That's pretty much how mine works. Put a cart on wheels above the level, and control it using a stiff piston. The movement of the cart should be done using a 3 way switch hooked up to two chains, each of which is controlled by a different grab switch (look into sackboy trackers if you are unsure of how to do this). Hang the claw mechanism from the cart using at least 2 stiff pistons. Make the the button lower the crane (hope you are good with logic), and make the claw close automatically when it is range of an object. Then you would have to make the claw release the object when it is in the correct location (look into OR switches for this). Again, good luck - it gets pretty complicated to make it work smoothly.2009-07-22 02:57:00

Well anyway, I'm in the creative mood, so if you want me to make a crane my way, I'll be glad to oblige. 2009-07-22 12:53:00

Could I combine these, so when you jump to press a button, it lowers the crane (or Krane, if you will) and automatically grabs onto a box?
Sorry, I suck at creating.

And logic.

OR switches are the only logic I really know.

Thanks for the help.

You could, that's what I would do. But if you need any help, I'm available.

I'd make it longer than 60 secs. Part of the fun of these challenges is seeing how far into them you can get. Instead of a time limit could you maybe have something thats working agaisnt you that gets harder the further in you get?2009-07-22 16:29:00

Or random boxes could be explosives.
