The Artists World - SpotlightedBlack-Toof
As your thrown into a strange world The Artist needs your help.
all
Hello There Folks.

I've been spending a great many nights on this my newest level.
I was trying to give it a different look overall.
It's going to be a 3 part story arc.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v617/thehivetyrant/APhoto_9.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v617/thehivetyrant/APhoto_8.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v617/thehivetyrant/APhoto_11.jpg

This level is rather simple and easy and introduces you to several characters and themes.as the story arc continues the levels will increase in difficulty.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v617/thehivetyrant/TAWho-1.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v617/thehivetyrant/TSWho.jpg

Finally it's finished.

Enjoy!

Ok, I've been anticipating this and the amount of publicity you've put it through. It had to be good for anyone to take a blind look at it - and it really is!
It just looks brilliant and the fact that it's all got that hand-drawn look to it is great.
I really love the fact that there's some puzzles in there too. It's hard to find decent puzzles in a LBP level - but these are great.
Some suggestions though - the second speech bubble by the crazy man whose hiding is all stars, so something there is being censored.
Also, in the lgihting puzzle room where you have to shine the lights at the rubies, it's very difficult to get them to stay were you want them to. The always spin round and face a different place for me anyway.

Overall though I loved it. It was rated at 3 stars though, so I thought I'd up the rating for you. I gave it 5 stars and hearted it.

Hmm censored you say?
It reads "Hey Dude, You found a way out yet? Whats that noise? It's him, run for your stuffing!"

i wonder whats wrong?, so if i change it and re-publish it should be fine.

And that lighting puzzle is a two player puzzle. So they do drop back to original position if you let go.
Could you tell me if you knew it was 2 player or not?
If not i need to make the 2x symbol more visable.

thanks for the feedback

I saw that speech bubble fine - it was the second speech bubble, the first time you meet him that was censorsed.
And I had no idea it was a 2 player puzzle

Really liked the art style though

Oh sorry i misunderstood there,

I played through the level myself and saw it was the 2nd one and fixed it now and replayed it to make sure.

The word was sucking i changed to draining.

I have also enlarged the x2 mmessage so hopefully it's more visable.

Thanks for the quick reply Coxy ^^

First thing I did was fall in a hole at the far right corner and land on two blocks of dark matter that I guess are holding the beginning section in place.

The little rube goldberg puzzle solution - nice. The book pages with it's geometric rune incantations was great... the intro looks awesome, and the storyboarding of sackboy conking himself on the head and whatnot as he falls down this shaft... I think that ONE spot could use a few sound effects, like clunks, crashes etc to simulate him falling around cartoonishly... and if there's any therm for it, some crumbling rock as you fall out of the bottom of the shaft into the clouds, and maybe a slight transition using the GLS to make it feel a little less abrupt.

Anyway... with that minor shred of scrutiny out of the way, I can slather you with compliments. This level is gorgeous, creative, and has one of THE most unique visual styles I've seen. There's no lighting tricks, layer tricks, glitch tricks... it's just hand crafted detail and a great eye for color and design.

The concept is hilarious and endearing, the gameplay is balanced and fun, simple obstacles given tons of style and excellent context... and everything feels "just right"

The wobbling pillars, the collapsing ledges, the tiny Disgaea-Underworld-style castle in the background, the intricate custom stickering and ornate carvings with ancient-sacks scrawling on walls, the out-of-the-ordinary Okami-like 300 LB sticker trigger (I was like "wow, cool!")... and the raving lunatic artist, running by in his underwear, getting his brain sucked out from the top of his forehead by a stylish alien... leaving only his mullet and skinless skull behind - that was just plain awesome, subtle, but full of endless cool factor.

The skulldozer-style chase at the end, was ridiculous... other than the Skulldozer itself, and maybe the Basilisk in mrsupercomputer's level, nothing really comes close to looking this cool, that I've seen in community levels.

This is probably alot of hyperbole, but I really enjoyed this, and was impressed by every single thing about it. I can't wait for more, and don't let the fools who lowered the rating on this trick you into thinking this isn't 5 star material. I can sum this level up in one word - "WOW" - I figured I'd like it from the screens and vaguely remembering your promo thread, but I was genuinely surprised when I played this. A short and sweet level.

Also... it's funny I was going to say "decorate your scoreboard" but then I realized it matches perfectly with the cardboard fenccing, and the grey + black that's surrounding it. No need for overkill.

I don't know if your the one that uploaded a picture of that dark matter.
I was able to deduce where it was and fixed it now ^^ Thanks.

There may be enough room for sound effects. Since they dont take much.
Debris may be not be... The therm is definetly almost max and i mean Almost!
i did do a GLS transitioning but it may have started too early or too fast. I'll have a look into it.

WoW, You wrote loads and it was compliments!
I really appreciate the great comments, i was really worrying towards the end that the level wasnt going to be a good as i had wished it would be.
You've really boosted my confidence and quelled my worries though.
I am very thankful for this.

I am really glad you enjoyed it though, it does really make it worth the time spent making it!
Dont you worry i've already got the 2nd one all planned out!

Thanks again. made me really happy.

Played through this last night and really enjoyed it. Great idea for a level and when you drop into the grassy area it's obvious your not in an average level. I thought the decorations you used were smart choices for getting that painted quality that makes the level idea work. The chase at the end is crazy and ranks right up there with the skulldozer chase from the MM level. Had a lot of fun playing it. Rated it 5 stars and hearted it. Thanks for sharing it!2009-07-23 01:58:00

The first thing I have to say is WOW. This level has an incredible design. Great job.

At first I was a little frustrated (for only a sec ) because I didn't know what to do. But when I figured out the little Goldberg sequence I was very impressed. The intro was amazing, very creative with the little sackperson falling and hitting its head.
What really made it for me was the entire look of the level. You painted everything to seem drawn by "the artist". You also used all the layers wisely, by adding the mountains in the backdrop and even the castle. Also the fact the the rocks would break o the cliff made it very nice. I love those details!!

Now that I think about it, there are two things that are going to make me play the level again. First, there was a cave entrance that I didn't go into because I chose to go up (I wonder what's in there..). And second, the fact that for a couple of seconds you could shoot that machine. Can you actually save the artist from death?
I'll find out

Excellent Job

Thanks for playing my level dude (sorry liked the character in this level)

first things, the intro is awesome, really cool idea like it's a movie

throughout the level i could see some real fine work, love the fact that everything has multiple stickers on it, the chacter dude at the begining is awesome, i can't really build characters, but that was cool, great platforming it that i wasn't just running in a straight horisontal line (i'll check how to spell that and edit when i do) and the ending including one of the best chases that i have ever seen, i don't want to spoil it but that is way better than skulldozer, also noticed the cool hidden LBPC stickers nice touch

however whilst i really liked this level there were points at which i could see dark matter it was really small square amongst some clouds but twas noticed, also are the sensors on that tree that u climb up supposed to be visible??????

either i had fun playing this level, sorry i'm bad at reviews, but i hope theres something useful in there, i gave :star::star::star::star::star:

Hmm i'll look into that, although if you wander across this thread again feel free to pinpoint me to an area where they be.

I decided to keep those visable so people know to expect something to happen when they go over that area.

Thanks for the help ^^

Cracking stuff. Loved the look of it. Really well done. Was good fun too. 5 stars no doubt.

Just to let you know, you can escape from the level by jumping onto the sheep(?) that rotate, then down the back layer.

haha Sheep. Thats quality detail for you, they're supposed to be rabbits.
Well i did put an invisable barrier so you couldnt jump on them easily.
I assume you jumped from the side?
Either way i'll extend that barrier!
No ones "escaping" my level... nice choice of words haha

This level starts of in a very nice way. You have been eaten by the doombook of art and are trapped in awesome intro scene with neat design and attractive little color changes. Is that all? Nope. The creator was genius enough to put a few sticker switches for extra points even thought I didn't get them...

After the really cool intro scene you drop through the clouds (It's raining sackboys! HALLELUJAH! It's raining sackboys! HALLELUJAH!...) in artistic world full of beautiful trees, grass and rocks (much better than it sounds!). Compliment on the birds, very nicely done .

The platforming after that is good cause it's spiced up with a little effect. I liked how you made some parts fall of. It fits in with the theme. Another compliment at the castle in the background.

After passing the rabbits covered as sheep (for some ) you meat the guy that's been trapped here for a while. Now here I get a little dizzy cause I can't seem to remember much from here... I'll fill this part if do (no hard feelings?).

Let's jump to the best part of the level, it's near the end. When the awesome brain sucking robot appears and kidnaps the guy(isn't it adultnap?). I tried to save him but with no luck...

I got to ask, is there a different ending if you save the guy? Will you make a sequel? How much thermo did you use?

:star::star::star::star::star:, heart & beautiful (I think platformer would have been a better tag)

Well see ya

Really wonderful level. Couldn't finish it though so I can't give my full feedback

One major bug I found, while climbing up the steps near the part with the water splashing, one of the steps got destroyed. I couldn't go up because the next step was too high. Going back to play it, hopefully this won't happen again :0

haha I'm sure I knew they were rabbits at the time, I just remembered an hour or so later and forgot what they were. to get on them, I 'm sure I jumped up and grabbed on so a barrier at the side might not help. just some gas under it to stop folk wandering about would be sufficient I think.

Theres not a different ending, shooting at him is just a way to gather more points.
There will be another level after this and i wanted a 3rd but one step at a time for me

Thermo is upon bursting.

@AwesomePossum
hmm thats quite a bad problem since it prevents the level being completed, first i've heard about it... Anyway if it happens again feel free to inform me and if possible which ones of the steps it was also.

@Matt 82
Hmm they're made of carboard so i dont think grabbing them is an option but i'll try. Although i do agree, fatal gas would solve the problem. And i'll add it in.

Just played it and loved it!
As others say, very nice creative direction, very clean and refreshing!
Great intro, great characters and boss also, and some pretty cool ideas!

I had some difficulties to pass the big tree with the bouncing branches, especially the second (big) one...
but maybe it's because i'm not the the best player
And talking about littles details, when we're under the 300kg weight, in the sky, above the rabbits,
we can see a little dark matter square (that is certainly used to hang the cloud).
You should put it higher so it doesn't appear in the screen, and it will be perfect!

Very Good Work!!!

Oh i'll changes that dark matter now definetly dont want no one seeing that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hmm seems several people are having trouble with the 2nd bouncing branch.
I'd hate for people to get stuck and not experience the rest.

Any ideas on how i can make it easier for folks?

I thought about making it an auto spring you up like the first branch but then theres no challenge.

OR would bringing the 2nd branchs destination branch down a bit work? so you dont have to get as high?

Any ideas folks?

A point chain that shows the jump trajectory there will probably clue people in and motivate them to keep trying. It's no different than the spring pads in that Chapter 3 story mode level with all the stained glass in it... nothing hard about it, just a skill that's not frequently used.2009-07-25 19:53:00

First of all, I would like to say that this level is AWESOME, definitely one of my favorites. The unique way that everything looked hand-drawn added an interesting feel to the level. I was really captivated by it.

The entire opening I thought was very entertaining. The Rube Goldberg Machine puzzle was great, and I thought that the book with the floating runes was very well done, especially the ensuing fall through the introduction.

The level was really enjoyable to play through, especially with the puzzles involved. I liked the way that the two player light challenge had the stickers on the back wall to explain what to do. I don't think I've seen that in many other levels, and I definitely love it. I also loved the chase at the end. Before playing your level, I had played some others with chase scenes, but most felt rather easy to get through. When I played yours, I was so happy with it. It was challenging but not impossible, very well detailed, and the camera view was excellent. Great job there!

One of the things I loved the most about your level were your characters. The Artist was amazing, I found his underwear to be very humorous! I felt bad when he got his brain drained. That Square was also great, however many brains he takes. I always enjoy seeing user-created characters, especially yours, as the detail is great, and the fact that they actually move around the environment was pleasing to see.

The sticker switches throughout the level were well used, also. I especially liked the bunnies.

I really don't have any complaints or criticisms, I didn't run into any dark matter squares, and I was able to figure out the tree climb in a relatively short amount of time. Great level overall, can't wait for the next part! I hearted it and gave it :star::star::star::star::star:.

I don't know why, but I'm missing the sticker switches needed to get by the 300 Kg part...all I have is the 3

I restarted and changed my settings so I'd get prizes, but it was to no avail. PLEASE HELP I WANT TO FINISH THIS LEVEL.

It is amazing so far, and the descriptions from other people are making me itch even more.

Arrrgghh this is quite bad. It's basically the O sticker.
i believe it's obtained possibly through doing the edit mode tutorials.

Hmm so people who dont have the right stickers cant complete the level, now that is bad. I'll definetly have to stick to simple easy to get stickers in future.

Aaaahhhhh this level was so goooooooooooooooooood!

Pure genius, i loved the cartoon style of it, it reminded me of Paper Mario

Some many cool mechanics, like the 300 kg weight and when your little friend get sucked up from behind the tree, i was like "Nooooo take me instead!".

Even the title intro was cool it reminded me of a movie intro or one of those intros for cartoons when they make an hour long episode, call it a movie, and give it an obnoxious plot. They call em movies when really they're just longer episodes >.<

I like how you had the free random sticker switchs so people could get bonus points and prizes if they kept on their toes.

The ghost train was awesome, it reminded me exactly of the skull dozer level, good work there.

My only con was right after your friend gets taken away, that tree was a struggle for most noobs (I had my brother and my friend play the level with me). The second branch, the biggest one, took even me some time to firgure out how to use it to get to the next branch >.< I took a picture:

I can't get past the "300" weight. I Have the 0 sticker but it seems that isn't the right one to be using. Why would you make a level that requires stickers I don't have

So yeah, there isn't much I can say - the visuals were great and the intro bit (falling down) was really nicely done. Also, you have three errors in the title and description of your level. Combine this with a very short description and it may well put people off - which is a shame because it looks like it could be a fantastic level.

The errors are a missing apostrophe, "your" instead of "you're" and a missing comma:

Okay... theres quite a bit to look at there.

the tree obviously needs some tweaking for newbies.

several people dont have the correct stickers for the 300kg thing.
Anyone know if i can put a storyline sticker in my level?

It's not a zero '0' sticker but the letter 'O' sticker, i think it looks better than the actual zero sticker. And is easily obtainable from edit mode tutorials i think.

I could obviously make it so any sticker will do. what do people think about that?

Your correct about the description, The description on this website may have an error thats not on LBP i'll check.

Whereas are you sure it's Artist's because that means Artist is and not it belongs to the artist.

I'll get those all sorted out. Thanks for all your feedback!

It depends on how many artists you are talking about. Artists' would refer to something belonging to more than one artist, and artist's refers to something belonging to one artist.

Of course, artist's COULD also be artist is, you just have to read it in context of the sentence.

Now, as for the 300 KG thing, it'd be best if you could make the O a prize bubble and maybe in the beginning say that the player needs to turn on community prizes.

If that doesn't work, yeah, just make any sticker work. If you do that though, I'd make the sticker switch visible on it, and not make the 3 a default sticker switch...if that's possible. That way, people might actually scroll through their stickers and use the numbers...just because it fits. I know I would have done that haha.

As ape;les says, the apostrophe is used for ownership as well as for an abbreviation of "it is". As you mention "The Artist", I used the singular possesive Sorry to bore you with a grammar lesson, but some people notice these things and it genuinely puts them off.

I'd also agree tat if you are going to use sticker switches use ones that you know everyone will have, or give it to them at the beginning. Personally I wouldn't bother with them, but it's your level. As long as the sticker switch isn't a barrier to people playing it's ok I'll give you a proper review when I can play through it 'cause I am looking forward to it

I've had the fear of sticker popularity before too... after Gruntos last level, and now reading this (I think the 300 LB sticker was like something straight out of Okami and just awesome)... MM really needs to make it so that you have a temporary inventory of stickers for use in a level online, ala being able to pick up the paintinator even if you don't have the MGS pack.2009-07-26 20:00:00

Okay Lads!!!

I've made it so any sticker on the 300Kg weight will do fine.
Although it will still show the '3' and the 'O' as the main choice

(This should give the impression these are the correct stickers if you have them BUT if you dont, people will no doubt try another random sticker and it'll work.)

I totally agree with Ninja's idea that it should create the temporary sticker in their inventory! Lets get that idea out!!!!!!

Also i've tweaked the 2nd branch so although the challenge is gone for that branch it flips you up like the 1st. the 4th and 5th branch are still bouncy ones however.

So everyone enjoy!

I'll raise a drink to the lot of ya *Cheers*:arg:

I just played this level and it is absolutely amazing. I love the look of the level, everything was well made, nice solid gameplay, cool prizes, and some nice cause and effect stuff in there as well. I'm not even sure how you made the level look the way it did, it looked hand-drawn, which gave it a unique feel. The ending was amazing as well, although I wish that chase went on a little longer.

I did find one glitch that caused me to fall to the bottom of the floor, it was right after the 300 kg thing, I was just randomly jumping and I went over and behind the bush which caused me to hit the bottom.

Overall though amazing level :star::star::star::star::star: and a heart from me.

I really liked this level. The starting area looked quite nice. The pillars and the way they moved was pretty good, and the chain reaction which you needed to activate to get to the book was excellently done. The floating letters which appeared when you got to the book was also very nice. The level intro, well it could quite possibly be the best one I've seen. It was a great use of the global lighting tool and it was actually one of my favourite parts of the level.

The actual level had very unique visuals, and the hand-drawn style was very well done. The character design was also great. The part with the rock you had to push to stop the water from getting out was a bit too dark in my opinion, and you could make that part a little bit brighter, or if you still have enough thermo add some lightning effects in that part. I also thought the tree part was a bit hard.

The boss was a lot of fun, and I thought it was about as good as the Skulldoser boss in the story mode. The boss was like the intro, amazingly good. The level was a bit too short, but it's only the first in a series, so I guess that's forgiveable.

Overall I give it :star::star::star::star::star: and a heart! Nice work!

I adore this level! I loved the puzzle at the very beginning and the intro was absolutely stunning! The rest of the level made me feel like I really had fallen into a water color painting that was alive with creatures. I loved the little touches like the clouds in the background or the rabbits running up over the hills.

The artist was well done and his running from tree to tree and then sucked into the sky was hilarious. The puzzles and platforming were a bit tricky to figure out at first, but nothing too difficult.

The one part that frustrated me was jumping up the tree branches. I just felt that the two spring bolt branches at the top weren't working well enough and it took me forever to get up there.

Over than that, I loved this level! Great job!

Just playing this now, here's my feedback as I go through the level.

-At the beginning there are some pillars with dissolve under, this is just personal preference but I really think you should color that. I dislike the default dissolve color.
-There's a mag key visible on the spaceship looking thing.

That's really it for the negative, the rest is just personal preference so this was a real nice level. I really liked the Rube Goldberg thing at the beginning, the intro, all the details like the castle in the background and the footprints on the ground telling you where to step, the chase part, the artist that drew the world and obviously I liked the world itself. It was very nicely detailed and I liked the hand-drawn look. There were a lot of switches and bolts visible which I think didn't fit with the level but that didn't really matter. It was also kinda short and the ending didn't give me much of a story, I'm guessing there will be a part 2? Overall, I gave it :star::star::star::star: .

Awesome level!

I actually found a bit of a bug that you might want to fix. If you jump on the friendly guy the first time he appears, in the grass, you can manage to fall down through the floor and to the bare ground.

Also, I found that it kinda ended abruptly. Is there going to be a continuation? Or did the bad guys win? I was kinda confused.

But still, incredible level - I loved the art style.

Hey i loved the look of this level!

what i thought really stood out though was your use of characters and the almost puppet-stage like way you frame the dramatic scene at the end... inspired!

reminds me of some of the finer moments in the MM story levels! nice job!
