Need a little help with ideas.

As you may or may not know, I have a story series of levels I am trying to do. Recently I created the 3rd chapter of the series (although as of now its a closed beta). Minus some cosmetic tweeks at the end, the stage is finished. The problem lies in the stage I plan to release with it.

The stage is Chapter 3a. It is essentially a side story of another character in the series. The chapter is meant to introduce the character, how they fight, add some backward continuity, and some light foreshadowing. My problem, aside from Mr. Thermometer, revolves arounding the latter half of the stage.

To not give too much away, the character runs into an illusions expert that traps them in what is viewed as a highly distorted cave. The problem comes in at what I want to have go on there....I cant think of much for this new character that feels like anything other than basic platforming with deus ex machina type gimmicks to escape their situation.

So, I come to you guys for ideas. The character is a female bomb specialist. A selfish character who simply prefers to blow up an obsticle in her path rather than deal with it. That in itself presents the problem of things simply being to.......simple.

Any ideas, thoughts, input, commentary, jokes, puns,....really at this point ill take almost anything as I am sick of being stuck.

you may want to take another look at Mm's own Canyon levels. These are a great way of showing how bombs can be used in many different ways.
I haven't seen a level take bombs and use them as well as Mm and I think it'd be fun and pretty unique if you could make something like that

I had taken a look at it. I just cant really think of a way to use the concepts in a different way for my own stages benefit. I have a handful of ideas, but in all honesty, I cant get them to translate into the game how my brain has them.2009-07-27 20:33:00

How about...

You have to defuse a ticking time bomb, but the illusionist creates a load of fake bombs too, so you have to figure which is the real bomb before it blows.

Or...

You have a jet pack and you need to drop bombs on the illusionist, but he creates duplicate versions of himself to fool you. Everytime you drop a bomb on a fake version, you get penalised some way. You could make the real illusionist look ever so slightly different from his cloned versions to help the player identify him.

Those are good suggestions....but sadly wouldnt work...diffusing the bomb isnt an issue because you are the bomb user so she definately (there character is suppose to be female) isnt scared of them.

second, you arent fighting the illusionist (thats later in the story). its more escaping the mines. So i am trying to figure out puzzle type things i can do with bomb.s

so are you in caves or mines? if your in the caves you could do something like a bomb shooter the you fire at stlagmites to make them fall so that you can jump on them to get to the next area. or you could do the 'find the key to open the door' technique but that would be probably be boring. cant think of much right now, ill come back later when my brain has woken up properly

Could she apply explosives to a shaft mechanism? Something like a piston in an internal combustion engine? Have a shaft (glass lined? I dunno you'd have to mess with materials and weights to get the physics right) that the effects of an explosion would push an object toward a switch, or more explosives or something?

I'm not sure how you'd work it in, but I've always enjoyed the end of the magician's palace, where there is a box that comes down on top of a block and it disappears, leaving behind a flame log. Switch out the flame log with a bomb, and set it to explode when grabbed you get too close.

Also, have you played AAAlone's bomb level, Nerves of Steel? It's got some great bomb related elements in it. I wouldn't advise copying his ideas directly, but his level is fantastic regardless. Check it out here:

hmm the stalagmite thing and find the key type suggests, while cliche, might be the best i can get out of this particular area. i was trying to think of an elevator type situation where the character would stand on a platform, put explosives under it and BOOM rocket her (and the platform) out of the mine area. just not sure if i could get it to function right. i dont think the bombs would have enough omf....or maybe too much omf.2009-08-01 05:42:00

you could attatch a piston to the elevator and put explosives under it - when the bombs explode the piston is activated making it look like the bombs have blasted it up2009-08-01 13:04:00
