Site Advertising

Okay seriously... what's with the advertising on this site these days? When I first noticed the ad bar, it seemed appropriately oriented to gaming and things related to it. Now I'm seeing ads for nimdiet.com (weight loss meals), thecutekid.com (yes... because posting a picture of your child on the internet is just about the smartest thing you can do these days), and even an ad for a Muslim dating site. A Muslim dating site? Don't get me wrong, there's plenty of value in a Muslim (or any other religious) dating sites... but exactly how is this relevant to this game or this site dedicated to it? Regardless of mine or anyone elses religious beliefs, I simply don't think this kind of advertising is appropriate for this site. It's certainly no more appropriate than an ad pertaining to a specific political party or any of it's affiliates is it?

So how exactly are these ads directed to this site anyways? Have you, the admin or mods, noticed any of these and thought twice about their complete irrelevance to this forum? I know there are plenty of Muslim, Christian, Atheist, Jewish, etc etc members here.... but it seems to me that these ads are getting increasingly further from the interests of this forum and it's topic.

Is there a way to contact the ad company and ask for more relevant ads? I mean seriously, if you're going to advertise to a community of people interested in a certain topic... shouldn't those ads be relevant and aimed at that target audiences topic or interest?

I know there is a way to turn them off, but out of respect for the site I initially chose not to. Now I am beginning to think otherwise.

Am I the only one noticing this trend?

I may go this route as well. Like I said, I didn't block them before out of respect for the site and this being a way of generating money for the site... but 99% of these ads are completely irrelevant to my interests in this site or LBP.

Blocking them client-side can't decrease the income of the site in any way, don't you think?2009-07-19 21:48:00

Oh for sure. I seemed to recall a discussion about the ads before (which I can't find now), and I thought I remembered the admin asking if we wouldn't block them or something.

Meh... doesn't matter anyways, I'm blocking them now. I just think it's something that the admin may want to bring up with the advertiser. These ads really aren't relevant to this forum.

I didn't know that, anyway this is the topic

I guess i'll disable the blocker for lbpc; it DOES mean more income for the site, after all.

But why should advertisement be relevant to the place they are placed in? You can just ignore them, as long as they aren't flashy or otherwise distracting or irritating

Well, other than filtering out ads we feel are inappropriate, we have no control over what ads are placed on our site. Google fills the slots with ads it deems appropriate based on site content, but there's also a "highest bidder" component that can frequently introduce ads that seem irrelevant.

In regards to blocking ads, please don't. We earn money in two ways: donations and advertisements. If you donate, you don't see ads for your "donor period" (which is generally very long), but if donating is not an option, please just deal with the ads. It's really our main source of income, and believe it or not, it goes back into the site directly. We could make life hard for those who block ads, but we choose not to because we respect your right to block ads where you see fit. We still ask that you don't - we get paid through both ad views and ad clicks, and that money helps us deliver more to the site. Even I don't block them.

I just disabled the blocker (muslim matrimonials site lol), hope this thread gets some visibility, and maybe the old one could be sticked - not many people know about these things, i feel a bit sorry for not knowing, too :2009-07-19 22:31:00

I think ads should be relevant because the people placing the ads should cater to their audience. Since LBP is generally a game who's target audience aren't looking for dates, to lose weight, or interested in... magnets (?)... it just isn't good business sense to advertise those types of products on this forum IMO. I've seen several other ads for web developement or other online video games, and these are certainly more relevant to conversations that frequently occur on this forum. I'm also a member of a paintball site that uses a similar ad bar, and I never see any of the types of ads I've previously mentioned. All ads seem to be about painball, hunting supplies, camping gear, law enforcement, etc.

This is what I thought.... that you had asked us not to block them. As per your request I will not block them, but I just can't see these ads as being targeted at the right audience. This "highest bidder" component you mentioned could be the cause I suppose. I just don't see dating, religion, or weight loss ads as ones that are appropriate for the LBP community.

Thanks for responding CC.

@Rustbukkit:
Seriously?
You're complaining about what the ads are?
And besides, that they're not rellevent to YOU doesn't mean they're not for anyone else.
You say the game is directed to people who usually don't need stuff like loose weight and dates and magnets, but as LBP might not be directed for that kind of people, in case you havent noticed there is an extremely large range of people that do play LBP, you for example who are like 40, while others like oldage are barely teens.
And even if they're not relevant, it doesn't matter, your request is like asking a T.V. station to control the commercials they use and limit them to only things related to that channel...

So don't complain to these almost invisible bars,as they can easly be ignored, or do you prefer t be in a bad forum with limited ads just for one person?

As I recall Google ads used to be placed on websites relevant to what the content was. This means that: For Example: If someone used the word "antique" in a thread, there is a chance you will see an ad regarding to antiques These days though I've noticed on most forums (Not just LBPC) the ads are really random now.2009-07-19 23:19:00

What most people/websites do is just let Google do all the work. Going through Google is definitely the easiest way to do it, and probably the most profitable. Google just leaves it up to, as ConfusedCartman said, whoever paid the most for their advertisments to get "air time", it's 0% a matter of what is going on in the thread or website, and 100% up to Google and their partners.

lol, don't know why you snapped, but i was just saying you shouldn't really mind ads as they can easly be ignored and was just making my point, altho you seem to want to antagonize me for some reason, but its cool, not like i care much what a stranger over the intrnet says to/ about me.
You shold really learn relax man wasn't trying to insult you to begin with.

Oh and please, next time you have a personal preoblem, take the insults to the profiles as there's no real reason to use such language in the posts.

I'm simply tired of this members attitude. Taking everything I say far too negatively and constantly trying to egg me on. Either I tell him to take a hike or fire back with big arguements that get things off topic, which I'm trying to avoid doing. I'm not the only member Silverleon does this with... there are several people that are really sick of it.

PLease don't double-post for quoting more than one person, there's a multi-quote function for that.
Here's a link to the thread i made explaining it:
https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=12694

Btw, i got nothing against you contrary to what you might think, believe me, i would've given the exact same answer no matter who would've posted that. I don't focus negatively on users, but rather on what the posts say to which i answer with my own opinion. That's all, nothing personal.

Please take a hike. There is no rule here stating that while I am responding to one individuals post and hit send while other posts have been added, that I can not respond to the next post without having to open and edit my previous statement. Another fine example of your attitude problem.

I'm fully aware of how to multi-quote in forums, thank you very much.

Stop acting like your a mod... you're not.

lol, was just trying to help, don't get all snappy.
Btw, you could copy both your posts, delete them, then quote both posts you were quoting and then paste your posts, that way even after quoting you can merge tham. (Just a tip)

Oh, and i know i'm not a mod nor do i think i am, but i know its very difficult to be one, since its impossible to be everywhere at once, and i'm just tryhing to help as much as i can, for example reminding/ showing the rules for some stuff so th user can fix it and doesn't do the error in the future.
So please don't take it so negatively.
