sky to space transition

Archive: 15 posts

hi. basically ive got sackboy on the ground and when you walk past a sensor switch it activates a magic mouth on a person who is on a spacestation. when the mouth activates the camera shoots upwards to where the mouth is. the thing i need help with is when the camera shoots upwards, i need something that looks like the sky turns into space and then back to the sky when you press circle. ive done a backboard and stickered it black and put a few stars there but it doesnt look very good. Can anyone help me?2009-07-19 13:51:00

Try putting some planets, asteroids and, if it's a funny level, some funny looking aliens. I don't know, put a lot of different things not just stars.2009-07-19 14:09:00

no this isnt what i meant. what i mean is when the sky turns into space so the skys blue and then when the camera shoots up it transitions into black.2009-07-19 16:24:00

..a few thoughts...

You might have to either transition your level lights prior to getting there and using spots to illuminate that section, or the whole level have no light from the beginning. ...another thought is to just build some ceiling above so you see only the backboard.

If that isn't quite what you meant, another thought is to use a sensor to trigger the lighting and fire off the magic mouth, but use a camera rather than the cutscene on the magic mouth. So as he moves away.. the camera returns as well as another sensor to reset the level lighting. Maybe even toss in a timer to make the sequence work a bit more to your liking.. or like if the camera was on a piece of dissolve you could get rid of it once past a point in time or per their location..

just found a way to do it, saw it on a space level i was playing. use giant spotlights to make a horizontal beam between the sky and space.2009-07-19 16:44:00

I've also found that using the gradient stickers with some fog can work really well.2009-07-20 20:37:00

It's all about finding the right mix of gradients to fade from sky to space, along with lighting and timing. I've seen some pretty fantastic effects achieved when people have been able to nail those down.2009-07-21 13:24:00

i did this for a level that never got published, i used some gradient sticker little lights for stars and light connected to a switch on speed, the thermometer didn't like it very much though 2009-07-21 14:43:00

It's the LEDs as stars that eats thermo. Looks cool though!2009-07-21 14:49:00

A great alternative is visible emitters attached to dark matter. The actual emitter has a glowing diamond shaped center. They don't actually emit anything, so the thermometer stays fairly low.

That's pretty much how I do it. An Aurora Borealis of lighting, some gas, some glass, and some stickers... just takes some trial and error to get the looks right.

I don't know if this helps, but I have just finished adapting a gradient rig I use for making gradiated colors to work in play mode...you could prolly use it to make a fairly specific sky to space gradient. and since it is done with an emmited cam, you could change one set of colors, and flip upside down for multiple transitions.

hope that helps.

oops, BTW the level is called "gradient studio utility", and my LBP handle is swanbrown.

Can't you just activate a magic mouth in space at the same time as triggering a global lighting tool that transitions from light to dark? As soon as the mouth is triggered the camera will automatically pan upwards to it, while the global lighting should make the sky darken as the camera pans up. For hundreds of stars which barely touch your thermo, just use flat pentagonal pieces of dark matter and sticker them white.

Not the most sophisticated solution, but it should save on thermo and Neurofen.
