Really worried - Health problem

Archive: 37 posts

Before you tell me to see a doctor or whatever i wanted to ask on i wanted to ask here to see what it might be, and right now isn't the ideal time to see a doctor

At the moment my breathing has become completly consious, and if i stop breathing then i don't get the usual feeling that i should breath in again.
I can easily stop breathing for about a minute and i don't even have to think about it o_o

It's really worrying me because it's 6am and i'm trying to sleep, but it's really difficult because i have to consiously tell myself to breath all the time!

I really hope it isn't some sort of brain damage, i can't last much longer breathing like this D:

The mind is a powerful thing. Maybe you're just being overly conscious about it. Thinking that something is wrong, and realizing you don't have the knowledge or information to properly determine what it is leads you to thinking the worst.

It's like karma... I think karma is stupid, and the people who believe in it don't fully understand that just by believing in it, they automatically take every bad thing that happens to them and link it back to the last bad thing they've down and vice-versa for the good things.

Buuuut, I'm not a doctor, so don't take my word for it when I say it's all in your head. If it's really bothering you, you should get it checked out.

P.S. Since your brain automatically controls breathing, and while you're awake you feel you have to consciously thinking about breathing to do it... sleeping would be fatal since you'd slip out of consciousness and not be able to concentrate on breathing.

It could be any number of things. I have a family member that's worked in mental health for almost 20 years, and it sounds to me like it's some sort of anxiety disorder. Stress is a powerful thing - it can literally make it impossible to breathe in severe cases. Do you feel nervous/stressed/anxious at all? That could definitely be a factor.

Then again, it could be unrelated to stress. The safest option is to go to a doctor - over the internet, we can only make educated guesses.

That is highly unlikely. If he's able to breathe if he puts forth effort, there would probably have to be brain damage in order for anything like that to happen. Even if he did have brain damage and he fell asleep, it's very, very unlikely that his body wouldn't wake him from sleep if it was unable to breathe for him.

We'll either way, sleeping wouldn't be possible/safe. I just meant that he wouldn't be able to control it purposely while he was sleeping.

Might be a serious casae or a simple realization case.
Not sure how to deal with a serious case, but a realization case (you simply understand you have to breath and do it conciously now,) you can simply try doing some sort of activity that would make you forget everything else (exept sleeping, as if its a real case of mental disorder it's not a good idea. (Never sleep with any sort of brain damage, can kill or place the person in a comatose state)
But if you something like lets say play a really interesting game or go outside and do something that takes a lot of concentration you might forget you're breathing conciously and go back to doing so unconciously.
Just do something to clear your mind from everything else, wether it be watch T.v., do some exercise, read draw or play a game in the highest difficulty, this should wear off soon.
Yet that is only if its a minor case of realization, if its a major problem i wouldn't know what to do.
Hope that helps.

I agree with cc in that the most likey cause is anxiety. When I was around the age of 12/13 I had anxiety troubleq. In my case it usually was a unique, almost nautilus feeling stomach pain. Sometimes in really bad cases -at night when I was deep in thought- I would totally freeze up and get this very... Horrifying feeling. It's hard to explain, but it kind felt like my whole body was being weighed down.
Anyways, whether or not it is anxiety it would be a good idea to tell a doctor and/or your parents. And I'd you think it is anxiety, just try to relax.

Hope that kinda helped

That's called sleep paralysis
It's quite rare to get SP when you're awake so i guess you're lucky

It basically means that your conscious mind is still awake while your subconscious has told your body to sleep.

I personally think it's really cool, but it was the scariest thing ever when it first happened xD
I usually get it while i wake up but getting it before i'd slept became really common earlier this year

Well i've just been to a doctor and she said everything was probably fine

I kind of forgot to mention about the thing where i don't feel the urge to breath in when i stop breathing :S

My mum's gone to work now and i have no idea how to contact them to check if it's worth going down again - and i'd really like to sleep too

Hmmmm I don't think that's what it was for me. Like I said it's hard to explain. I would get this sudden dream or thought of something best described as infinite impossibility... But who knows, maybe it was SP. All that really matters is that now I'm anxiety-free and am generally very happy 2009-07-17 08:45:00

The only time I've ever experienced the need to consciously make myself breathe was my first major asthma attack. It's aggravated by allergies in my case. If a doc thinks your ok for now I wouldn't worry terribly.2009-07-17 09:09:00

I'm still worried about the holding my breath thing though
I've just had plenty of sleep and i'm still getting it D:

You know when you hold your breath and feel that you HAVE to breath back in?
I don't get that at all D:

If i stop breathing then i just feel as i normally would until i decide to breath back in, and it's worrying me because if i stop for about a minute then i get a stingy feeling in my chest so it must be doing some damage.

Have you told your parents about this?

Im sure they will be able to bring you to see someone who is better able to check you out than the people on the forum here.

If you have told them already they may have just thought you were fooling around. Tell them again and say you are worried about it.

Im sure they will listen and help you out in the best possible way.

I told my parents and they took me to see a doctor - but i forgot to tell the doctor about the thing that i was worrying about the most because she kept diverting the conversation

The doctor's already told me that i'm completly fine once, and i'm not sure my parents would bother taking me back
down again

Since the consious breathing seems to be getting better i'm just going to hope that it's all just caused by some crazy hormone imbalance and that it'll sort itself out

Speaking as a parent- If a doctor said my child was ok and my child said she wasn't I would take her to every doctor available.
Speaking for myself- I had a breathing problem. One doctor said everything was fine. For four months I thought, as the doctor said, it was allergies. I ended up in the hospital. Another doctor found the problem. The result was my lungs have now been permanently scarred.
If you're having a problem keep telling someone.

Oh wow. Scarred lung tissue can really mean the difference between life and death. As a recommendation, I suggest you keep seeing a(ny) doctor at least once or twice a week. If your doctor kept diverting the conversation, then it's much more serious than you think. You may result in hospitalization just like Lady_Luck, and we all know we wouldn't want that. So keep constantly seeing your doctor, just in case something were to "pop up" suddenly. And just keep telling yourself, "Breathe in... breathe out..." It always helps me to relax about the situation and also keeps constantly reminding me of breathing properly. Get well soon, Dex.2009-07-17 21:32:00

Yes you do, people never think or perform at their best when they aren't in a sound mental state. Calm yourself down, try listening to gentle music or drinking chamomile tea, whatever works for you.

In reference to the breathing issue, your brain is wired so that you cannot simply die from not breathing in. If it comforts you to know: it is a fact that you cannot kill yourself by simply holding your breath. Your brain's last instinct is to take a nice deep breath. This isn't particularly helpful if you are going to drown, but just holding your breath will not kill you, neither will "forgetting" to breath.

Wow.. I'm so sorry to hear that.

Sounds like either anxiety or too much caffeine and video games. Just the way the tv works can do funny things if your eyes pick up on it.. I hate florescent tubes because I see the flicker. If I think about it, I see the flicker of tv as well as monitors. ..which is why I don't think.

Talk a long walk, ride a bike.. play Frisbee, and let your eyes calm down and focus on reality for awhile. It really does wonders sometimes.

Good luck and ditto what Gravel said..

I know alot about anxiety disorders and panic attacks. Dexiro, you really sound like an anxious person. The way to type about it and tell us, it seems to be anxiety.

Now don't mix stress and anxiety. Anxiety is "unconscious stress" so it might be normal you think you're not stressed. But you probably are. You simply need to relax and, the most important thing: EMPTY YOUR MIND. EMPTY YOUR HEAD.

Concentrate on one thing. Concentrate on a candle and fix the flame. Watch something that would disconnect you with the immediate envirronnement. READ. READING is marvelous to concentrate and empty the mind. Especially informative lectures on a subject that really interest you.

Other tips to fight anxiety: Cut the sugar! Soft drinks, coffee, etc. Cut that down especially in the evening. Actually, don't drink anything sugary or with cafeine in the evening. Also, digesting can contribute to anxiety. Don't eat just before going to sleep. During the day, have the more socialisation you can. Socialisation can help develloping expression wich is key to empty the mind and heart instead of building stress inside. Sports. Sports and exercise is completely effective. Do some more, try to find some physical activity that interest you in order to alternate with videogames.

Empty your mind, continue to talk about your worries and stuff with your parents. Remind them you're serious if they joke around. Sometimes we are in a part of our lives where the body simply needs to exteriorize stuff or that we have to put some stuff back on track. This can happen when you're young too, it's not just adult matter. Eveybody is slightly different

I've just tried diverting my mind to other things by singing, but then i realise i've sung for a minute without breathing in o_o

Can anxiety really explain the body losing it's instinct to keep breathing?

Like i said i can easy stop breathing for a minute without feeling out of breath

Actually i think it might be getting better, i'm starting to feel out of breath a lot more for whatever reason
I think it's my body telling me that it needs more oxygen, and it's really helping me to breath more naturally

Anxiety can do all sorts of crazy things.. Just like static in a pc, but I seriously doubt you totally stop breathing. You are probably just breathing very shallow. I bet if you tried doing some exercise, you would notice yourself breathing quite a bit.

Seriously.. turn off the computer and calm down.. what is it like 1:30am there?

Good night and we will be thinking about you. Take care!!

Make sure you get it sorted properly, and don't take your time about it...

Hope ya get better soon

Calm yourself down, try listening to gentle music

Hmm. I always calm down when i listen to angry music (angry music? lol) like Trivium, Metallica, BFMV... wierd eh? lol. I'm such a freak.

Your breathing thing can totally be an anxiety symptom. It does different things to different people. You can panic and thinking you will / can stop breathing, thinking you're not breathing enough or needing more oxigen and some people also hyper-ventilate.

Whatever the symptoms, right now your think sounds like anxiety. It's something you can totally make worse by worrying about it. Relax, try to sleep.

EDIT:

Also, feel your muscles. Especially the abdomen ones. Try to see if your abdomen might be contracted, tense. If it is tense, let it go. Try to make so it's really decontracted and that you feel free, light, opposite of tense and contracted, hardened.

Hey Dexiro , I'm sorry to hear about your problem and I hope you feel a lot better real soon.

I can't give any medical advice because I honestly haven't a clue and you probably feel overwhelmed with advice already.

I would just reiterate though that if you ever have any illness you're worried about you should never rely on just one doctor. Always go back several times and see as many different doctors as possible as quickly as you can.

I speak from experience. I won't go into detail , it would take too long , but several years ago I had a brown patch on my back that was itching. I saw my doctor straight away and he actually laughed at me and said it was a birth mark and nothing to worry about.
Well to cut a long story short 3 years later after having seen him many more times and being laughed at every time I eventually got to see a different doctor ( I only wish I'd demanded to see one much sooner ) who sent me to the hospital to have it checked out.

The outcome was I had to have it cut away with a laser because they found out it was actually a malignant melanoma. That was about 10 years ago and I had to have regular check ups for a further 5 years before I was given the all clear. Fingers crossed it doesn't come back.

Anyway the moral of that as I said is don't take 1 doctor's word for anything. They are just as human as the rest of us and make mistakes just the same.

Good luck man and I hope it all works out ok for you.

Your breathing thing can totally be an anxiety symptom.
.

Thanks a ton ranger!
I'm pretty sure it was an anxiety attack now i can't thank you enough for letting me know what's going on

I managed to found a list of symptoms and a video showing the process of an attack and it was almost identical to what happened to me

It must of being a REALLY severe attack for my first one though, from the list f common symptoms these are the ones that i had

Palpitations
Pounding heart? or an accelerated heart rate
Trembling or shaking
Shortness of breath
Chest pain or discomfort
Nausea or stomach cramps
A feeling of being dizzy
Unsteadiness
Lightheadedness or feeling faint
Fear of losing control or going crazy
Fear of dying Numbness or a tingling sensation
Chills or hot flashes

Pretty much the entire list apart from about 2 of them

I'm still experiencing some symptoms but my breathing is becoming more natural and i'm really calm. I guess i just need to wait for my subconsious to calm down with me

You're probably nervous.
Alot of people tell themselves to breath like in a game or challenge.

I hope you get well soon.
And just think about happy thoughts, or funny things.
I think about Earth, Unicorns, Cake and Girls.
(Ignore the last thought)
