Awezomemanz reviewz: Kingdom Hearts: The Sacky Chronicles (series)
Archive: 7 posts
I've always been fascinated by the Kingdom Hearts series. Square Enix and Disney are quite an odd combination. The whole game just seems like fan fiction, but I'm not really a big fan of either side. I've never played FFVII or FFVIII, only FFX which I used a game shark on because the game seems impossible to a 10 year old. As a matter of fact, the only RPG I've ever been able to really get into was Pokemon because I was collecting little monsters, making them my slaves, and then battling them for money, which to me is totally bad ***. I've never liked Disney either, just Mulan, and while I've seen all the movies I can't really remember them besides Mulan which I have the Special Edition 2 disc DVD. That movie is awesome. I really hate Micky Mouse and all of his little friends. They have their annoying voices and remind us of the time when cartoons didn't have to be funny, just ridiculously happy where everything has a giant creepy smile. The worst part is that Sora is pretty much a Disney character, all of whom, besides Mulan, are inhumanly good and impossible to relate to. The game is just too Disney and I feel embarrassed to play it. The only character I actually sympathized with was Roxas. And now I've spent about fifteen minutes writing a rant about Kingdom Hearts when these levels aren't related in the slightest. Kingdom Hearts: The Sacky Chronicles is a series of levels created by Rever364. Kingdom Hearts: The Sacky Chronicles: Lvl 1: The Wait for LBP The first level about the wait for LBP makes pretty much no sense. Before you play these levels, know this: these levels have as much to do with Kingdom Hearts as chocolate bar does to poo. Sure, chocolate bars can be turned into poo, but then it loses its nutrients, its delicious taste, and all of the chocolate, leaving you with a peanut if you're lucky. Last time I checked Kingdom Hearts was about some stupid little kid living on an island with some rascals and maybe some parents and they want to travel to different worlds so they build a raft but the raft is actually a magical space ship you acquire later in the game, mission control is Alvin and the Chipmunks, and you get sucked through some door when looking at some cave drawings or something like that. Then Squall kicks your *** to take your fancy giant key. This is just about a sack person talking to some voice (hinted to be Santa Clause) trying to get the keyblade, the keyblade being the peanut I was talking about in my analogy. Again, this is a lazy story that you really shouldn't play these levels for. About the first level, Sacky gets impatient about waiting for LBP and goes outside to get some coins when he falls into some place (that's pretty much all I can say about it, it's a place) with some stuff that's on fire and electrocuted. It has some...interesting humor, not your typical deranged LittleBigPlanet humor, but more like the smart *** humor used by smug metrosexual men like the Prince from the new Prince of Persia game. The Wait for LBP is a bit more creative than your standard platforming level. It has a couple good platforming devices and ideas but the "enemies" look like heartless just as much as Megan Fox looks like Freddy Krueger. They're just warped heartless with one arm that's electrocuted and swings around in a circle and I know they aren't much of a challenge in the game, but this is just ridiculous. They're three times taller than you, indestructible, and just annoyingly easy to maneuver past. I kind of wonder why he put them in the level. The heartless don't serve to challenge you, they're just an annoyance forcing you to shift layers. Hopefully this changes as the series go on. The Wait for LBP has some pretty difficult sections, but I never had to restart the whole level because I died to much, which is probably a good thing. Rever actually has some good ideas, but they certainly could have been executed better. They don't really serve a purpose besides to get in your way, and for the beginning of a series of levels, shouldn't atmosphere be important? Everything in the level is there just to be there, there's no real explanation for anything. For Journey to the Center of the Earth, you're there for research and it's the center of the earth. You know why the stuff is there. The Wait for LBP, on the other hand, has you go outside to an environment that doesn't even reflect The Gardens, but just some random mismatched materials. Some parts look very pretty but the level leaves you thinking "what the hell?", and not the good kind of "what the hell?" that you get after playing Tree Fortress, but just no understanding of anything besides the character's name and fact that he was told by some voice to find the Keyblade. :star::star: Kingdom Hearts: The Sacky Chronicles: Lvl. 2: Just the Beginning art One (Yes, four colons) ...okay. So now we join our hero, Sacky, in some kind of desert. You can choose to skip a bunch of needless dialog or read it all, all of which doesn't really add to the story either. You fall into a pit after seeing a mirage and learn to "believe", adding some kind of "leap of faith" aspect to the game but it really falls flat because the leap of faith sections are just there to fill space, none of them are challenging. They're just steps. You also get the Paintinator in a section much like the section in Kingdom Hearts where you choose which area you want to be strongest in: strength, magic, or defense, and I'm sure we all chose strength. I hate Goofy. Why would anyone ever want to defend him? Anyway, this is a good sign in the series. I'm writing this review only having played the first and second level (I'm doing each of these reviews individually) so I don't know if the next levels get much better, but at least now at least something seems to have a purpose. The story doesn't get any more interesting though. Besides a voice telling you you're going to die, there's pretty much nothing new. Many problems I had from the first level return to this level. The environment is ridiculous, which the level even acknowledges with one of those fourth wall breaking jokes that point out the obvious. There is little atmosphere, but it does still feel a little more focused than the last one. It feels like some kind of tomb that has been taken over by robots and heartless. Some of the heart designs are cool. The heartless look much, much better than from before. Infinitely better. They look like heartless. Um....That's pretty much all I have to say on the looks. As I mentioned before, this level focuses on the Paintinator. It uses it like just about every other level with a Paintinator in it, to kill enemies. Half of the level is your simple "wait, come out of cover, shoot, return to cover" gameplay and the other half is shooting down floating platforms so you can cross over to the next platform-shooting section. There are also a couple sections where you can break the level. I escaped the confines of the level once or twice and also got to a section where as soon as I would spawn get hit by a projectile and die, causing me to lose all my lives in a matter of seconds. Six seconds to be exact. This level isn't hard. It's much easier than the first level and I think it's less varied, but it does more atmospheric stuff, such as falling platforms and traps. It's still imaginative and has some of that humor found in the first one. It has improved over the first level, but not enough. :star::star: Kingdom Hearts: The Sacky Chronicles: Lvl. 2: Just the Beginning art Two Since this is part two of the sequel of a series of levels, it's not really any different from the level before. It's shorter, though, and that's probably a plus. I don't want to repeat myself, so I won't. This level is less boring than the others and has some nice original sections. It has a boss battle that looks like it's going to be incredibly epic, but it's really easy. It even reminded me what the story is. Okay, here I go: You and this voice are looking for Sora over all the planets and defeating the heartless along the way. The giant heartless boss feeds off the planet's heart or something like that and all the other heartless get their powers from the giant one. The environment is still ridiculous, but at least that means you don't know what to expect. This level also reminded me of a horrible trend in gaming: Making giant bosses incredibly easy. I don't think anyone is going to be mad if your Leviathan is going to kill us a couple times, Resistance 2. That's how it's supposed to be. Also, if you give us a "Kill a Giant Monster in 20 seconds" kit and give us armor that is specialized to protect you from monsters, then the giant monster loses its epic feel and just becomes a big enemy with a big health bar that might take you a little longer to kill than a normal enemy. The hardest bosses I've faced this gen have been on LBP, and so have the easiest bosses. This level's boss gives you so much cover that the only way you could get hit by a fire ball would be if your sackboy was replaced by a senile old man with no arms or legs who had to drag himself along with his teeth. Like the second level, but more varied and has a better focus. :star::star::star: Kingdom Hearts: The Sacky Chronicles: Lvl 3: To the Factory! For all of the previous levels, the settings have been odd combinations of materials. It's all very confusing, but a lot of parts were nice to look at. This level is a drastic change from the others; there aren't heart-shaped decorations everywhere and random material. Instead, it goes from a desert to a town to a burning part of that town to a forest. It's a change I welcomed, but it still feels odd for a series to just change styles all of the sudden. Hopefully the series will be able to explain these crazy sections later on. The level looks really really nice. It has a lot of detail, although some short sections feel a little empty. Nothing looks sloppy, it's all neat, detailed, and all of the materials used work. To the Factory takes advantage of the Global Tool acquired in the first Creator Pack, but every time it happens it feels rushed. I don't like it when people set the Global Tool to finish in one or two seconds. It feels very unnatural and rushed. None of the flaws I mentioned above take away from the level. It looks good, and that's all I can say. The story continues as Sacky is headed to a factory to get a gummi ship to go to other planets....End of story. To the Factory plays well, but I feel like it had a lot less of the originality in the first two. But, since this level isn't a crazy random mish-mosh of materials, I can understand this. I think Rever is trying to put in obstacles that make sense in their environment. This isn't bad, it's just a different style from the other levels. It's still fun. The boss in To the Factory is placed at the beginning this time. Apparently, the heartless that turned all tiny when the giant heartless was killed teamed up to form one super heartless, much like the babies from Invader Zim. The boss is a bit more challenging from the last one, seeing as I actually died this time, but you're given an infinite lives checkpoint. It's still one easy boss, though. The second part of Just the Beginning I liked because I thought it didn't overstay its welcome and was packed full of variety. To the Factory, on the other hand, is too short. You don't even enter the factory, you just get to it. I feel like Rever could have put some more of the forest section, or maybe have us enter the factory for a bit.. However, he did say that there are point bubbles hidden throughout the level and I only found one hidden spot. I'm going to go back to explore it more after this review. Overall, To the Factory is a nice direction for the series. It's pretty, detailed, and a hell of a lot more atmospheric. It's a lot less varied than the previous levels, though, and doesn't really stand out among the crowd. :star::star::star: Overall This part of the review is for you too lazy to read the whole thing and to help me beat Shining Aquas. According to Wordcounttool.com, he has 2730 words in his review and I have 2219. The Sacky Chronicles is a series of levels that barely resemble the Kingdom Hearts games, having as much in common with them as I do with a functioning, helpful member of society. You're off to find Sora for some reason and you get to defeat lots of heartless along the way, and by the second level they actually look like Heartless. It's nice to see that the latest level in the series seems to have a setting other than a weird place with a bunch of stuff between you and the scoreboard. None of the levels in the series are special, some of them are good but they're nothing spectacular. It's a good group of levels to help kill the time, but you won't be blown away. Rever364 is becoming a better creator as the series goes on, that's for sure, so I'm going to keep an eye on him. His last level was actually pretty neat, it just had no "wow" moments. Hopefuly the next entry in the series will be a level to grace my far-too-generous hearted list. Not 2730 words, but close! | 2009-07-17 03:18:00 Author: qrtda235566 Posts: 3664 |
Hehe, nice review. I'm still going to play it though. I'm not a fan of Kingdom Hearts... | 2009-07-17 14:37:00 Author: Unknown User |
I guess better luck next time. You also had the disadvantage of having a series with fewer levels in it. Still, I'm trying to figure out why you reviewed this if you aren't really connected at all with the Final Fantasy scene OR the (old) Disney scene. It's like asking someone who hates Sci-Fi what he/she thought about Star Trek. | 2009-07-25 20:51:00 Author: Shining Aquas Posts: 353 |

It's like asking someone who hates Sci-Fi what he/she thought about Star Trek. It doesn't necessarily mean I won't like the level. I like Kingdom Hearts, it's just it always feels weird because I haven't played most of 'em. I want to get 7 and I like 12, it just feels weird when a FF character shows up and I have no clue who it is. I like KH, I really do. I like Kingdom Hearts, I just don't like Disney and I'm not a big fan of FF. I just hate most of the Disney characters. Plus, this level has almost nothing to do with Kingdom Hearts whatsoever, so it's more like asking someone who isn't a big fan of Sci-Fi what he thinks of the Star Trek roller coaster. I still like Kingdom Hearts, it's a fun game. I like most of the worlds even if all the Disney characters have some of the corniest dialogue ever. I don't recall ever saying I hated it. Let me just end this here: I think Dead Space sucks, I think the LBP level rocks. I'm up for any theme. I'm up for a Hannah Montana level. And I reviewed it because I was asked to. | 2009-07-26 00:20:00 Author: qrtda235566 Posts: 3664 |

Seems like legitimate reasoning to me. As far as playing 7 is concerned, it should be significantly easier due to the game being on the PSN now. Granted, I don't think you're missing too much, 7 always felt a little over hyped to me. I would recommend 9 instead. | 2009-07-26 03:09:00 Author: Shining Aquas Posts: 353 |
I know it will be a little OT, but I played the entire saga of FF. I loved them all but if I have to chose one among them I vote for X. | 2009-07-26 23:46:00 Author: Miglioshin Posts: 336 |
