New Site Layout?

Archive: 8 posts

Hiya,

Yes, the site is very good.
But the problem is the layout. It's kinda boring...
If you want, I can make you a layout of out scratch, meaning a drawing.
I don't code, only sometimes.

It's better if the Home section has its own page, then the forum on another.
It's time to pimp the homepage.

I already have alot of ideas, and my ideas are always drawn perfectly.
So it may take a while.

Well, we used to have a different site home... long ago...

The thing is that it's now integrated into the forum, and they want it to be all forumy. Right now the home page is an extension of the forum, and, well, yeah <_>

Oh, cause to me when I click Home, it shows latest updates and news.
And you don't want a forum looking section...
May just add color.

The homepage software we use was selected for a number of reasons, most notably due to the need for integration between the homepage and the forum. We used to have Wordpress for our homepage, but it didn't integrate with the community like we wanted it to. You had to actually register separately for the forums and the homepage. It was just too separate. Instead, we opted for a much better homepage - one that provided all of the features that users were accustomed to while still allowing us complete control over the look and feel of the homepage.

In regards to the style, it's working for us just fine. There's no real need to change the style - it looks good and it's not distracting. I'm sure you have a lot of ideas, but there's a lot more that goes into the design of the site than just ideas. The design of the site has been iterated constantly over a span of more than a year based on necessity and input from our members. We don't usually change anything around here unless it's either necessary or called for by a majority, so I'd say the style is really what the members made it (if that makes any sense).

I have no problems with the layout. Wherever you are on the site, the tabs and banner and such offer a quick link to any other area of the site.

As they say, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"

I see, nice explanation.
I kinda changed my mind about this.
It would look better if it looked like MM's homepage.

Interesting thread...

I also do artwork webpage layouts, but I am also an dhtml / php coder and the two are always tricky to mix.

IMHO, a robust forum structure is by far a more critical factor than the graphical content. That said, I think the css styling on this site has been tailored quite well and still retains some adaptability for the future.

An alternative front page would, in my opinion, lose cohesion with the rest of the site.

The only way to make a site-wide improvement would be to start looking at the structure and css of the php pages - which may then impact negatively on other areas of the site and take a long time to remedy and iron out any associated issues.

VBulletin and phpBB forum structures have taken years to perfect but are not easy to customise.
