Desert Direction Block

Archive: 12 posts

So in the latest level I've been working on, you start off in a desert and need to walk to the right to get to the next area. I want a way to make it so the player can't go left, some form of obstacle that they can't pass, but I want it to be native to a desert... it's just that though.. what in a desert could possibly stop you?

Any ideas?

I guess the simplest things would be rocks and cacti. You could have a rock 2 layers wide with a cactus beside it on the other layer. If you don't want it to look that cluttered you could just put 1 cactus and block the other layers with invisible dark matter.

Alternatively you could make a large gorge sort of Grand Canyon-esque with a warning sign on the edge and some sort of hazard in the bottom , probably gas , just incase anyone is stupid enough to act like a lemming.

Instead of making a left wall, you can just make the ground on fire, with the thin layers used for cacti, rocks, and other decorations.2009-07-16 13:05:00

I like the idea of a canyon...

and BSprague, I had thought of that also. The floor being on fire saying like "oh it's too hot over there... better go the other way." but I don't want to clutter the layers with cacti and rocks.

Thanks guys.

You should be able to quite happily block off all three layers with rocks and cactii without it looking too cluttered. Just stagger them on the three layers, make the rocks interesting shapes and continue with a few pieces of redundant scenery on the other side. Maybe even make the rocks climbable for a little way up with a bubble stash and then block off the sackboy - make it an interactive feature rather than just a barrier.

Alternatively, a similar idea to the gorge is an oasis, with water made from blue gas etc. so it's unpassable.

Please don't use invisible dark matter.

I believe they use my method in a Story Mode level or two, in the Savannah I believe. You should check that for inspiration.2009-07-16 13:26:00

Well if any of you are familiar with World of Warcraft and have been to Blade Edge Mountains... that's semi-sorta-not-really what I'm basing my canyon of death off of... and I think it'll make more sense than a random patch of desert that'll kill you when you walk on it. I appreciate the idea though, it's just that I'm already at about half my thermo and I've only done a very small desert and a moderately detailed town and still have a LOT to add till my level is finished. I think the canyon would conserve the thermo better since it's basically 1 slab of stone as compared to a bunch of seperate cacti and rocks.2009-07-16 13:36:00

I know where you're coming from on the thermo issue. I made a stagecoach , covered wagon and a couple of buildings for my recent level and when I put them in the thermo instantly went up to half. I wanted to put a lot more buildings in put had to abandon that idea as there would have been no room left for the rest of the level.

Sorry I know nothing about WOW personally as I've never played it.

Here's what Blade Edge Mountain looks like.

Oh wow. I wasn't thinking of anything quite that detailed. I hope your'e not trying to recreate that. Good luck with the thermo if you are LOL.2009-07-16 14:02:00

If it's in a cave, you can emit some small rocks and bigs rock to come down tumbling on the left side.
But if its outside, like the first person who posted said, use cacti or rocks. I recommend cacti shapped like a bush with spikes on it. But don't do it to the next 2 layers... I'm stuck now.
